Sometimes when covering the latest and greatest in MMORPG news, it’s good to sit back and relax, especially when there is nothing big on the horizon — but not this week! Mr. Mike Schaffnit and Mike B join host Gary Gannon in our weekly discussion about the biggest events the in world of MMOs in a little show we like to call This Week In MMO! This ain’t yo daddy’s video games!

The biggest news this week by far is the early launch of a tiny MMO about an unheard of IP by an upstart video game developer. Of course, we are talking about Star Wars: The Old Republic. We know most MMO vets are tired of hearing about this game by now, but as Mike B states, this game stands to be the biggest MMO launch in history and will probably be a milestone for the genre as a whole. What about the pre-order early access? BioWare is only letting chunks of people in at a time. Many people don’t think it’s quite fair. However, Gary counters that by saying that it’s very smooth right now with no queue times, and he’s not fighting over mobs, like you usually find on MMO launches.

However, SWTOR‘s not the only news this week… or is it? Darnell’s 12 13 Days of Christmas went viral this week — ‘sup. Warhammer Online it will be merging servers — not a good sign. Then will Richard Garriot be working on Ultima again? Find out all this, plus of course, the answers to your viewer questions on This Week in MMO!

Just in case you want to hear more about SWTOR, check out The Republic — our regular TOR show — and last week’s TWIMMO! We got it all here for you.

Good show, as always. Now for my anti-fanboy rant:

I shouldn’t be surprised by all the incredibly pathetic whining about access to early game, but I can certainly be disgusted.  Get over it.  Bioware never made any promises, and certainly didn’t commit to any specifics on who would get in when.

Do ten pushups every time you think about complaining about not being able to get into ToR yet.  Then you won’t be such a girly-man when you do actually log in.  ;-)

Looks like they just missed the bombshell news of Aion going F2P? Oh well, next week…

    • Kusanagi2501

No it was in the show, just over shadowed.

For TOR EGA, honestly it is a fair system. Just because someone just got on the band wagon does not mean they can get it early. Dropping 5 dollars, spending a few minutes to call your local game store etc. is all it would have taken for the folks claiming they did not have the cash.

For hardcore content, when a game like Aion came out and was tailored to the hardcore, the casuals left and then the majority of the hardcore gamer base left as well. You need casuals in a game imo. To a degree, even in Eve you still have casuals.

Also YAY for grace period in SWTOR!

Just something for Gary, Fully Voice acted MMO…yeah that would be DC Universe… SWToR will only be the one remembered because it was overall better, like WoW is seen as starting MMO’s and not UO.

Neverwinter Nights was the first multiplayer online role-playing game to display graphics, and ran from 1991 to 1997 on AOL.

I didn’t care about the when I got in. What pissed me off royally was the (lack of) customer service. I was one of the later pre orders, and I naturally expected to be last on the early access. I was totally fine with that.

What got me was I had a glitch with my account that didn’t recognize that I had entered my pre order code, but trying to reenter it “code is already used”. Couldn’t access the customer service forums, because I hadn’t redeemed my code, but I had redeemed my code, but I hadn’t redeemed my code. Email wasn’t helping and the (ha) customer service phone lines A: hung up on me, B: put me on hold for hours then hung up on me C: kept me on hold for three and a half hours before finally talking to some guy who’s command of the english language was miniscule. So after nine days of trying and close to ten hours on hold my account finally says I redeemed my pre order (on the 15th, not when I entered it) for reals…I think. I still cannot post on the forums.

This launch has left the worst taste in my mouth towards Bioware, and I don’t plan on ever buying any of their games due to my experience with their “customer service”. I feel I am wholly justified to be pissy after all the crap I’ve went through and I know I wasn’t the only person who had this issue.

wouldn’t we all rather be playing a fun game with long queue times and competition for mobs than not be playing the fun game at all?  come on, that’s a no-brainer.

I guess its good that people playing now are having a smooth game experience at the expense of all the people who aren’t allowed in?

To answer my own question, yes it is good, and the people it is good for the most is EA, because the smoother their launch is, the more players will be subbing up come dec 20th.  So they are essentially covering their asses, and thinking less about their new consumer base than maybe they should.

On the other hand, i’m still not in, and probably won’t be until maybe tomorrow, but i’m not sweating it.

On the note of remembering games:
That many years ago i doubt you had the extensive gamer communities you have now, marketing possibilities, internet for all etc.

I agree with Garry on the part that players (who actually played when it came out) will think Ultima as a bigger changer of the game scene and a flame of inspiration for the MMO’s that came out after it.Looking at it in a way of how many ppl played it is the wrong way to look at it, you should look at what kind of influence it had on gamedesigners.. Not on gamers.

Greets and great show as always.Kris

You know I believe that all the content that Rift has come out with how fast Tirion does it and also who the open world is changed with events and such is a bigger deal then just adding voice actors.  I beta tested SWTOR and wasn’t impressed if felt more like a rpg then a mmo and I’m not paying a sub for a rpg I’ll just keep playing Skyrim.  If I really want a multi player rpg Mass Effect 3 is doing that without a sub.

Yea Gannon is right about the WoW launch. It was tough to find a box of the game in stores. It took me about 2 weeks to find one here in Seattle. So it was definitely popular at launch, but not nearly as hyped as SWTOR.

Mike is so right about Ultima Online and Rift being in the same category, especially if you move beyond the objective “historically significant” valuation, and move to thand consider my argument being against Ultima Online being “historically remembered”.

MMOs of the past don’t give the masses the feeling on nostalgia that games like Final Fantasy or Half-Life do, true classics, and that is why Rift and Ultima Online will only be remembered by the MMO elite.

The MMO genre has not reached the same plateau as the mainstream game, and thus, in my opinion, will not create a strong foothold in the anals of video game history.

World of Warcraft and EQ are exceptions to me. They will be remembered as the momentus leaps forward that they were. Games like UO and Rift will only be remembered by the MMO hardcore and elite knowledgable historians of the genre…And old people.

It’d be awesome to see the Mike’s trade box’s…. Not that I don’t think Mike B’s the best Mike of all… (sorry Mike S) but the thing is that Mike S keeps looking to his left and I know it’s towards Gary cause they’re in the same studio but it is so /odd/ when he’s doing it in the bottom panel.
Another idea when I know you guys don’t have a lot of room in your studio would be to try and setup some kinda partition to make it so he can’t see Gary too well right there then maybe he’d stop seeming odd looking that way lol.
