PvP or PvE?

It’s kind of the age-old debate. Several games feature both PvP and PvE, but many games just take on either one or the other.

The question is not what’s better, what’s harder, and so on, but which do you prefer? And, as always, I want to know why.

Personally, it depends on my mood. I love the thrill of PvP, of taking on another player and (hopefully) winning, I like the rush I get from knowing I outsmarted or outplayed another human being controlling a character that had at least a fairly equal chance of winning the fight. And I really enjoy working on that as a team. I’m just getting started in League of Legends, and I play a lot of arenas and rated battlegrounds, and in all of those environments I love playing with people, working together to achieve something, and taking out other players is the icing on the cake.

But, if I’m tired and want to relax, sometimes I prefer to PvE. I’m not always ready for the high-adrenaline feeling that I get from PvP, and for me, that’s the time to PvE. I love running dungeons, for example, trying to do my best, and working with other people. I also really enjoy raiding, at least while it’s still progression, or while it’s still difficult. Once raiding goes to farming, I’m not having fun any more, most of the time, I’m doing it because I need gear.

But enough of me, what about you? What’s your thing? What do you prefer, what do you seek out in games, what do you base your choices and your reading of patch notes and your frustration with development choices on? PvE or PvP?

PvP or PvE?

pvp for the same reason you stated.
It doesn`t matter what the game is, all dungeons etc once run one or three times are the same thing over & over, whereas you can fight the same player several times & the fight will change every time.

I prefer PvE but that’s because PvP isn’t really very immersive in its delivery.  Take SWG for example (mention this game very often), the PvE and the PvP are very connected and delivered in a natural way.  Not only is the story focused on different factions, but the universe is shared by these two factions and the entire play dynamic is very intertwined as opposed to having each separate. In SWG, you could flag yourself for PvP but if you weren’t careful, you could be forcefully flagged by the NPCs as you were out and about in the real world.  Having PvP in a completely separate arena just kills any immersion felt.  I love PvP so long as it’s a natural (yet SOMEWHAT optional) feature in a game.  To date, the only MMO that I’ve loved PvPing in was SWG, especially since PvP was sometimes a mix of NPCs and PCs while attacking player made bases or cities, but I still had the option to skip on PvP and do missions or quests or gather resources, or craft and still be relevant in the PvP scene.  No matter what you did in SWG, you were still in some way affecting someone else with your actions because it had a real economy, real crafting, real housing and a real world that couldn’t run without all of those.

I prefer PVE. Mostly because I’m more of a story person. Also, I’m not a twitch gamer so I’m not very good at PvP.

And of course there’s the fact that a great deal of the pvp ‘community’ are asshats. :(

PVP all the way!  Same reasons as you have stated.  Only PvP has the random factor which is human insanity/ingenuity.

PVE when I am with friends wanting to explore.

When I am looking at MMORPGs to purchase, or will be my full time MMO, then I would have to say PvP.  Combat, customization and PvP are my three top requirements for a great MMO.

I always roll on PvE servers now because I enjoy doing the
missions, exploring the world and just hanging out with friends.  The couple of times I have rolled on PvP
servers I would get ganked constantly by max level characters over and over
again.  This has happened on multiple
games so it is definitely not an isolated occurrence.  I don’t know why it’s fun to kill people who
have absolutely no chance of winning.

I enjoy both, as long as they are done well of course.

Oddly I think I get less irritated playing in PvP than I do PvE.   Fighting against other players means you are prepared to get beat some days but you also know you’re honing your skills to get better.

On the other hand, PvE bosses usually kill characters because of overpowered abilities or some specific weakness that players have to learn and exploit.  And once you learn the trick, the boss often becomes trivial and whatever you learned has little application to the next boss.

Now I really enjoy a well-done PvE storyline, but I’ve never found enjoyment in overly difficult mobs.   Since I do PvE for the story rather than loot, I suppose I see those mobs as an irritating block in the story.

Doing PvE with a group makes figuring out the tricks to beat mobs more tolerable and maybe some designers realized that which led to forced grouping mechanics (apart from being a build-in timesink).  I just find it odd how I can play PvP in a group or solo and I never get as ticked off getting killed by a player as I do when some mindless mob pulls out an OP ability to win.

I kind of go in between the two… though, I’ve only gotten into PvP twice throughout my entire WoW career. So I lean to PvE. I think had I ever gotten a reliable RBG group together, I’d be more into it, since my favorite part about this game is playing with a bunch of people. Also, since I’m on Stormrage, the name of the game is raiding. So that’s what I do!

I am more of a PVPer The game has to offer a good combat system and pvp for me to play it. After WvW in GW2 I am really enjoying the world pvp RvR type its is a lot of fun playing that with a guild and a server community.

As to PVE I have to like the world. I think the upcoming game wildstar will have a great world for me to explore the story of and maybe see some of the dungeons and raids. So it depends on the game and whether I like the world, and that will reflect how much I enjoy or even play the PVE. In GW2 I don’t do any PVE unless I have to (for daily, monthly, mats etc..) .
