IGN pulls the plug on it’s prominent eSports tournament. IPL 6 cancelled!
IGN has today officially announced that their upcoming eSports tournament IGN Pro League 6 has been cancelled. The event was due to take place on March 28th – 31st boasting major prize pools for Starcraft 2, League of Legends and Shootmania: Storm
That’s right folks, one of the most prominent independent eSports tournaments of recent years has apparently fallen victim to the recent string of cuts that hit the media outlet just a few weeks ago, also seeing the closure of Gamespy, 1up and UGO.
It has been rumoured for the past week or so that this announcement was coming, but being an optimist I refused to believe it, afterall you can’t go believing all the rumours (Hey MLG, I heard you were cancelled last year!).
Say it ain’t so…
Sadly, those rumours were given ground after general manager, David Ting released an official statement. In it he says;
“We regret to inform you that we have decided to cancel our next public competition event, IPL 6 at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, March 28-31.
When we launched IPL two years ago, the eSports landscape was very different with far fewer events than we have now. Now there are more tournaments than ever before competing for people’s time and attention, so we’re no longer in a position to commit the resources required to run another major independent event.”
Ting does go onto mention that IGN are looking for new homes for both staff and the league itself, something that was mentioned in the original IGN lay off statement. However I feel the biggest disappointment is for both the players and spectators, some of which were travelling from the far reaches of the globe to attend.
Ting does mention that tickets will be fully refunded and there is an option for those that booked hotel rooms at The Cosmopolitan to have their tickets refunded too, however thing’s aren’t so bright for those booked elsewhere or on none refundable flights.
