An interesting turn of events happened with the conclusion of IPL Face Off this past weekend.
After placing third in San Francisco, 8th ranked Team Legion shook up the standings by capturing 125 circuit points and bringing their total to 165, next to Team Dynamic. While this alone doesn’t affect the big three – SoloMid, CLG, and Dignitas – it does greatly affect other team hopefuls looking to secure a spot at PAX for the Regionals.
Here’s how it breaks down:
Currently, mTw.NA leads ahead of Orbit Gaming, 125 to 100 circuit points. What that means is the two teams could easily tie coming out of the MLG Summer Championship if Orbit finishes 4th and mTw.NA makes it to the top 8. If it comes to that, everything rides on a tiebreaker for the last slot.
On the other hand, Legion sits in a position where they will need to finish in the top 8. If they are unable to solidify top 8, one of the newer teams (such as CLG Black or Meat Playground) could force them out with a 2nd place finish combined with a 4th place finish from Orbit. A third place finish would instead again force a tie with mTw.
As Average Gatsby pointed out, as long as Legion and Team Dynamic make it to the top 8 at the MLG Summer Championship they will force another team to have to get 200 points over them.
mTw.NA will need at least a 4th place finish to do the same.
And depending on that placing, Orbit will need either a top 8 finish if mTw.NA doesn’t finish or 4th place to at least force a tiebreaker.
Either way, this’ll be exciting.
With 2 spots still in contention for PAX, all eyes are on the Summer Championship on August 24th.
