SMITE announces how you can unlock all SMITE gods forever, releases the new god Poseidon, and a new skin called Lil ‘Mana.

A recent update by Hi-Rez Studios for their third person action MOBA contained many balance changes, new skins, and a new god. However, the biggest change for the game comes in the form of the payment model. Previously SMITE utilized a F2P model very similar to League of Legends, but now you can choose from playing for free or buy to play. With a simple purchase of the Ultimate God Pack for $29.99 you can unlock all SMITE gods, current and future. The game is currently still in beta and it appears that this ultimate god pack price is at a beta only special price and will increase post launch. Head on over to unlock all SMITE gods.

Enter Poseidon:

In addition to the option to unlock all gods in SMITE, Hi-Rez has also released the new god Poseidon, God of the Oceans. Poseidon is a magical god with a new mechanic for the game. His passive, Changing Tides, is in the form of a meter that you can build up with auto attacks in order to increase your overall damage output. Above all else Poseidon gets the amazing ultimate, Release the Kraken, which can deal massive damage to surrounding opponents. Poseidon’s animations and art shows that the Hi-Rez team is releasing higher quality content every week. Along with his release is a secondary skin option that can be unlocked with the in-game currency and looks quite good. If you already unlocked all SMITE gods then Poseidon should auto unlock for you.

Welcome Lil ‘Mana:

It appears that the SMITE art team and sound team have been hard at work on a very unique skin. Months ago we had seen signs of a new Vamana skin, but had yet to see it release in the game. That skin has finally made its debut and is called Vamana Lil ‘Mana. From the name alone you can tell this skin is gangsta. The new skin, priced at 600 gems, features a new look, sound effects, and voice overs to fit the skin’s theme. Grab this skin and jump on into SMITE and make everyone around you smile and laugh.

With the new changes allowing you to unlock all SMITE gods do you plan to take a closer look at SMITE now? Will this help the game compete against League of Legends and DOTA 2?

I got to say if it really unlocks all new gods after launch, it has to be one of the best deals I have seen in a F2P game.

It does unlock them all. I believe post-launch the price will probably go up to $50. I also forgot to mention that it refunds any gems spent on previous gods prior to upgrading to the ultimate god pack.

Yeah, it’s a ridiculous deal man. They plan to continue to release 2 gods every month (and skins, which go for 4-8 bucks, respectively). A lot of potential revenue lost for them with this deal.

Potential Revenue was counteracted by the WoW syndrome. People already had so much time and money invested in god purchases in LoL that they are reluctant to do the same again in SMITE. This appeases the community and makes it easier to get access to the gods. Not sure what additional revenue sources they plan to have, but this definitely is something at least the community will like. Also gets rid of that stigma that new gods are unbalanced on purpose.

Likely, they looked at how much money the average user was spending on Tribes: Ascend before the Game of the Year Edition (which unlocks everything other than skins and voices) existed, and then how that average was influenced by people buying the Game of the Year Edition. Furthermore, they could already see how much money the typical beta player was spending on new gods in Smite. There’s no doubt in my mind that played a significant part in this decision.

Then you have to look at what games other than League of Legends are doing, namely Dota 2, which is actually going to give everyone the ability to use every hero for free, in the name of having player skill truly be the most important factor in the outcomes of games. (Heroes of Newerth quickly followed suit.)

People who are way into any of these MOBAs probably do not spend money on character unlocks so much as skins, since the characters are unlocked via gameplay anyway. It makes sense to let people unlock everything now for a fee, because if people have to pay for every character separately, then a lot are probably just going to say, “Screw that,” and just unlock the ones they want most via gameplay. Going back to Tribes: Ascend, when they announced the Game of the Year edition, my view was that I would have paid for it if they offered it early on, but I already have a lot of stuff unlocked now, so it’s not as compelling an offer for me, and thus I’m not really interested. How good that deal is depends on just how much time (or money, but that’s not really the point I’m getting at) someone has already put into the game.

Also, regardless of what a company says its plans are, rarely should one make assumptions about what future content will be when it comes to making a purchase. Just how long they will keep pumping out new gods will mostly hinge on just how long the game keeps making a significant amount of money, naturally.

Much like how there are a bunch of “WoW clones” that resulted from the crazy money that WoW made, there’s getting to be a lot of MOBAs on the market due to how big League of Legends is. Now Smite is definitely offering a rather unique twist on the formula, but oftentimes the key to drawing attention away from a market leader is just to make people feel like they can get more for their money elsewhere.

Time for me to check this game out.  Been holding off because of so many free games out now like Path of Exile.
