as someone who's casual RBG team eventually disbanded after getting put against teams over 500 above our rating 8-9 times out of 10 a night (yes, we counted) for multaple nights on end, i would like to say WoW's MMR can be quite varied. sometimes it got well above 500 differance, the worst, from memory, was our best player at 800 rating, against a team with multaple people above 1800, and everyone above 1500. it was bearly woth reserecting.

thing was, it really sucked for the teams we were facing as well, the matches still lasted 10 mins or more (usually) and ofen they got no rating out of it at all, or just 1-2 points. kinda blows for everyone really.

and yes we were bad at RBG's, half of us didn't even have pvp gear. even still, it was fun, untill the above started happening.

All news is good new, I don't think this is much of a big deal or game changer. You still get matched with others close to the same rating but somehow are placed in a league lower or by big placement gaps, at least that is how it was when I was playing. Jumping 70+ ranks 2 occasions weeks to months into the season from one match.

I would prefer though however equal matched players, usually you still progress that way and less stress about "oh no if I lose to this guy I will get demoted!" when playing lower ranked players, risking losing insane points while gaining next to nothing. Beating people you should normally beat, but based on luck, a typical long overdue (chance of) game throwing error we all do occasional on any game or life, you lose and you getting tanked superb amounts of points is rather demotivating.

I remember in WoW arena winning matches that only gave you 8 points, but every loss was a -20, absolutely sucked. I much prefer the consistency and not feeling like any game is more important than another (especially against lower skilled ones).

Part of me thinks that they are doing this solely because less people have been laddering as of lately. I remember seeing a long thread on the TL forums, showing that since season 5, 1/3 as many people are laddering as there were laddering in season 4. In season 4, about 1.8 million laddered in 1v1 at least once, and since season 5/6 it's gone down to about ~600k. This is probably a reaction to the generally longer queue times due to less people being a part of the system.

I get evenly matched opponents in maybe 2/10 games. It's not very unusual that I get to meet gold level players when I myself is bronze.

I always play really late at night when hardly anyone else is on; so I usually always get placed vs players of random skill. Also there's plenty of smurfs out there too.
