The latest in Starcraft 2 Mods. Introducing Starcraft Universe
Game mods; we love them, you love them and all with good reason, right? Sometimes they can completely change the game experience for the better, other times they seem like the death throws of a lowly learning teen unable to string two pieces of code together, thus destroying your whole experience. Well needless to say, if there’s a source code, there’s a mod, and the wonderful world of Starcraft 2 is no exception to this rule.
Over the past 2 years we’ve seen all sorts of modifications made to the Starcraft 2 engine that completely changes the humble RTS, be it tower defense games or simple one on one arena arcade combat. Bizarre right?
Introducing Starcraft Universe…
Next on the scene is a mod unlike any other. This one even caught the eye of developers at Blizzard last year when its Alpha was unleashed on the community. Que; Starcraft Universe. Whats the big deal about this thing? Its the fact the producers of the mod have literally ripped the code to pieces and are looking at developing their own third person MMO. Did we mention starcraft 2 is an RTS? Mind. Blown.
Originally working under the title World of Starcraft, Blizzard invited the developer of the mod to Blizzard HQ in 2011, in order to discuss the title and aesthetics of the mod. After a nice old discussion, it was suggested the title was changed to something more fitting and work began once more, with the full support of good guy Blizzard.
The past few months there’s been little to no information on an update for the title, that was until recently. It seems the developer and his team, working under the name Upheaval Arts, has actually been hard at work and you can now play the single player prologue. Wait what, we said it was an MMO, right? Well that’s still correct, however as stated in the video (above!), Upheaval are currently focusing on testing systems and therefore need to “release thing slowly to ensure all core systems work properly“. Take this as an open beta if you will.
