It’s Friday, and that means it’s time for GAMEBREAKER’s Indie Spotlight. This week, I’ve found Wolfram — a remake of id Software‘s 1992 game Wolfenstein 3D by Chain Studios.
For those of you who may not have played Wolfenstein 3D, the game is a room-by-room FPS featuring a character named B.J. Blazkowicz who is trying to take down the Nazi regime — by himself, of course. Players move through the many levels of the game; killing Nazi’s and Doberman Pinchers while collecting “stolen” artifacts.
The game is broken up into episodes and at the end of each section the player confronts some big nasty. It’s all just a little bit silly as one of the bosses is a robot-suit wearing Adolf Hitler equipped with chainguns.
The game was a lot of fun in the past and Chain Studios’ remake feels just as fun, only with improved graphics. Granted, these are not the most insanely beautiful graphics. But I feel that with this game, there would be a point where overly-improved graphics might feel out of place.
As a side note: if you happen to be one of those people who played the original Wolfenstein 3D and felt a little woozy doing it, you might want to give this a try. The lack of extreme pixelation helps quite a bit.
If you’re interested in downloading the game, it is currently available for free in three different formats: EU, US and Russian. The EU version is a modified version of the game with some of the content removed and any references to Nazis taken out. The US version is the full game complete with Nazi references. And, the Russian version is the complete game translated into the Russian language.
If you decide to give the game a try, let me know what you think.
