We knew it would happen sooner or later.
We knew someone would see all the success game developers are having funding their projects through Kickstarter — including the insane amounts of money that some of them are making — and they’d decide to post a project of their own with the sole intention of taking the money and running.
It looks like that time may have come.
Over the weekend a couple of people brought the attention of the Kickstarter gaming community to a project called Mythic: the Story of Gods and Men.
After a bit of sleuthing, two users pledged a buck each for the purpose of being able to drop into the comments and alert potential backers to fraudulent activity on the part of Little Monster Productions.
The initial poster linked the concept art to contest submissions from two different artists on conceptart.org and character art to a DeviantArtist. Even the office photos on the now-defunct Facebook page were stolen — from the Burton Design Group site.
When confronted LMP claimed that some of their team members used to work for Burton Design Group but left because the owner was shady. They also asserted that the art was theirs and they were being subject to “false claims of ownership.”
Interestingly, that was the only attempt they made at saving face before either removing the project themselves or having it removed.
Between the evidence presented, the swift removal of the project and the fact that LMP’s only existence outside of Kickstarter is a free Weebly site — removed as of last night — I’m inclined to think we won’t be seeing more of Mythic any time soon.
