Legend of Grimrock Sold Over 600,000 Copies; Reveals New Content
6 Comments

Almost Human, creators of Legend of Grimrock have released information on the success of the game and what 2013 holds for players.

In the yearly recap, Almost Human’s co-founder Juho Salila discusses how for their first game, Legend of Grimrock sold over 600.000 copies. Not only did they smash their expectations, but their first game as a new company was a best seller on Steam for two straight weeks.

…we’re now proud to announce that Legend of Grimrock has sold over 600.000 copies! We would’ve been happy with just one tenth of the sales numbers, so needless to say we’re very happy and the future of our company is secured for a long time.”

The Dungeon Editor having been recently added to the game is another success. The community has been pouring out additional content, with over 450 entries. The development team stated they were impressed by some of the brilliant mods that were being created.

Having also released on Linux and Mac, the team continued to say how delighted and impressed they were over the success of the game. However that doesn’t mean they lost the passion to stop making great games.

In celebration of all the news, Salila dropped two new screenshots. One image depicts a very Egyptian style tomb with what appears to be a mummy chilling out in the back waiting for you to make a move. The other image shows off a mine style level with various planks and one nasty looking gate.

Both images are visually impressive and the best thing to keep in mind here is the team is saying this is just the tip of the iceberg. If you are fan of the series expect more news, screenshots, and hopefully an expansion or update to come as 2013 rolls along.

This is awesome. Honestly the game deserves even more. It was really well done and fun all around. And the Editor is just insane. Looking forward to see what they release next.

A game gender that was almost dead for 10 years has shown to its critics that it back. Dungeon crawlers is what the entire RPG gender sprang from, and is at the heart of most MMO end-game (raids). Why it took so long for someone to re-discover this has baffled me. But the gender is back, and I look forward to even more with the community created content.

Genre, I think you mean.  Gender is considerably more complex and controversial these days.

:) But agreed. Why it has taken years for gamers and developers to rediscover older forms of the genre is baffling. I am just happy to see my childhood come back in a way that is enjoyable and keeping true to the feel of the game.

Yeah.  I think it was seen as “old” and therefore “bad”, something that RPG’s had evolved beyond and not something people would be interested in anymore.  At least, that the response I imagine from big publishers.  I know of at least one attempt to revive this genre… I bought and loved Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land for PS2, but I think that game was mostly ignored.  Regardless, I’m glad there are indie developers around willing to make cool stuff like this.  :)
