Once a week, I dig through the internet looking for the perfect weekend indie game. This week, I decided to go back in time a little and pick up a title that came out in May.
Voxeliens is a 3D retro-style arcade shooter inspired by a little game called Space Invaders, developed by Volumes of Fun.
For those familiar with the 1978 arcade game, Voxeliens should be an easy pick-up-and-play experience as the mechanics are pretty much the same.
There are some pretty cool differences. Rather than just moving left and right and shooting at the invaders in a 2D space, players are given a 3D terrain to play on. To make things more interesting, the “invaders” make use of the 3D space giving the player several rows and columns to shoot at. The terrain features arches that the player can slide under to get to the other side of the playing field — which can also be spun 360° as you move around.
Just like the original game, players will find each level of invaders requires them to shoot more out of the sky. But don’t worry, there are plenty of power-ups to help out along the way.
For those looking to try the game out, it can be picked up via the developer’s website for $4. And, if you’re still unsure, they do have a demo you can try out first.
