Disney's Deal Will Lead To A New Star Wars MMO

Tuesday’s big news all but guarantees there will be another MMORPG set in the Star Wars universe. You heard it here first.

Don’t believe me? Consider:

When the new trilogy debuts, with Episode 7 in 2015, there’s no reason to believe it won’t be accompanied by the same kind of merchandising blitz that heralded the Prequels’ release. There will be comic books, action figures, jigsaw puzzles, board games, LEGOs, lunch boxes…

… and video games. And there’s little reason to think one of them won’t be another MMO.

It is the future you see

Of course, it’s not as simple as snapping one’s fingers and making an MMO appear. Even if a deal were signed today to produce it, any MMO of this magnitude would require at least four to five years for development. That would put a launch in 2016 at the earliest.

Consider, too, the certain national-security-type secrecy that will blanket anything even remotely related to the Sequels. (Is that what we call them? There’s the Original Trilogy and the Prequels, so I guess that’s appropriate.)

The other merchandise mentioned above would need to have access to plots, images, and the like before the 2015 Ep7 release, so as to time their products’ releases with the first movie, but most of them are relatively small projects with shorter lead times meaning less of a chance of a security breach.

An MMO is another matter entirely. Hundreds of people would be involved in its development, over several years. Security aside, there’s the ability to work on the game itself when you don’t have a clear vision of the source material. I suppose a kind of general framework could be set out, involving guys with lightsabers and starships – but this is probably as good a reason as any as to why we’ve never seen an MMO coincide with a major movie release.

Since nobody is signing a deal today (probably), that also provides more time for the finished product to hit your PC. And more time means less reason for draconic security measures to avoid leaks. It all adds up to us not seeing this new MMO until at least 2017 or later.

But what film(s) will it be based on? If Disney holds to the old standard of releasing Star Wars films every three years, then Ep8 will be out in 2018 and Ep9 in 2021. A 2017 or early 2018 MMO release would allow the developers to use as much Ep7 material as possible, but expansions based on the later movies would probably be delayed until after those movies come out, for the same reasons noted above.

It might all add up to an MMO studio simply deciding not to bother with launching an MMO until after all three Sequels have come out, which would put it in 2021 or later. So we might be talking about an MMO that won’t be out for another decade.

Look at it this way: Peter Jackson started working on The Lord of the Rings movies in 1997, and the first film came out in 2001. Granted, this was in the very early days of MMOs, but we didn’t see a LotR MMO until 2007 – and the game follows the plot of the books, not the movies. So there is some precedent for this kind of delay.

star wars the old republic mmorpg mmorpg A New Hope

But who’s going to fly it, kid? You?

So what company is going to make the new Star Wars MMO?

Technically, Disney-owned companies do make online games, mostly in the social and family-friendly circles. The most notable such asset is Disney Online Studios, makers of Club Penguin and Pirates of the Caribbean Online.

But that doesn’t mean they’ll try to develop it in-house. LucasArts made plenty of video games, but it licensed out two Star Wars MMOs. So I don’t think you have to worry about Star Wars: Club Penguin Edition.

Exactly who would take up this colossal chore is something we can only speculate on at this point. Chances are, it will be a major company, akin to Sony Online Entertainment or EA/BioWare. It could even be a company that doesn’t even exist right now, especially if the game doesn’t come out until the 2020s.

Or maybe it’ll just be Blizzard. World of Star WarsCraft, anyone?

Take your father’s place at my side

And what would all this mean for Star Wars: The Old Republic? Nothing good, probably.

There’s already the precedent of Star Wars: Galaxies being shuttered to make room for The Old Republic. It seems unlikely that Disney would want two competing MMOs for its most successful franchise, so as one enters, another would exit.

That said, SWG lasted eight years, and, on the time scales we’re talking about, SWTOR would still have another five to 10 years in operation. So it’s not going to be going anywhere any time soon – and based on the general reaction from fans, it might not be missed or even still in operation.

star wars the old republic mmorpg mmorpg A New Hope

You want this, don’t you?

Finally, there’s the question of, “Will anyone play it?” After Galaxies – which wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea – and the mediocrity of The Old Republic, some folks might be hesitant to jump into a third Star Wars MMO.

I say, “yes.” There are enough fanatical Star Wars fans out there – and you’re probably one of them – that you’ll at least be interested. As doubtful as many were about SWTOR, it still sold two million copies out of the gate. That’s $120 million, plus whatever subscription fees people ponied up for.

That wasn’t enough to put a serious dent the $200-$300 million estimated budget, but it stands to reason that a game with a smaller budget could still generate enough interest to pull similar early numbers.

Whoever makes the game will have to overcome a mountain of skepticism, but once we see the first full-motion, 3-D, interactive, video – this is 2020-something, after all – of guys swinging lightsabers, we’ll want to know more… and more… and more…

And before you know it, you’ll be playing a gungan smuggler.

Disney's Deal Will Lead To A New Star Wars MMO

Wow, your rectum must be enormous to have pulled that entire article out of it…

This is not the mmo-champion forums.. go home sir!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Ploute Jereme Pierce

I hope they just bring back a Star Wars MMORPG that’s more like the Pre-Cu SWG days!

  • http://twitter.com/squared002 Squared002

Subject header is extremely misleading. “will” should be “might”. Journalism speculation as fact now?

    • http://www.facebook.com/aperegrina Alejandro Daniel Peregrina

It’s not the first time. It makes people click on the link. it doesn’t matter if it’s disappointing or not, they get the hit. I’m starting to get sick of it myself.

    • Diego Espinoza

at my english lessons they taught me to use “will” when the idea is not certain and “going to” when i was sure, not sure if thats good tough haha

      • http://twitter.com/squared002 Squared002

“Will” is subject to the content that surrounds it. In the case of the title here, will is used as stating a fact. Typically when a sentence starts with the word “will”, it is used as a question; an uncertainty.

For example, the current title, as stated already, in its current form, is using the word “will” to state a fact. This is clearly not the case since no official announcement has been made and is purely speculation. Albeit Jason is good at speculation, but the title was used to generate hits; ie, deceiving.

If the title was changed, purely by changing where the word “will” is placed, it changes the entire context and tone of the title. Because this article is speculation, the title should have been “Will Disney’s Deal Lead To A New Star Wars MMO?”

Do you see the difference simple word placement makes on the context of a sentence/statement?

  • http://twitter.com/Neo_Wolf Mark H

I agree totally misleading .  This is pure speculation with no basis in fact just guess work.  Also lets not forget by owning Lucasarts they now essentially have a star wars mmo.. SWTOR.  Why would they dilute thier own customerbase by putting another out. More likely they will throw more support behidn the existing one rather than put another out on top of it.

  • ArsenicSundae

Can any more damage be done to this IP?  I’m sure Disney will show us the way.  Ewok revival incoming…

    • DoctorOverlord

I’m actually have some hope about Disney acquiring LucasArts.  Remember how people shuddered when they acquired Marvel. Doomsayers were saying we’d see Mickey Mouse crossovers with Spiderman.

Instead what we got was Joss Whedon directing the Avengers, arguably the best superhero movie ever made.

Now whether Disney can repeat this with LucasArts remains to be seen but I’m not that inclined to think this is any sign of guaranteed doom.

  • Ted Beezy

Disney has, historically, not done very well with MMOs. Toon Town was big at launch, but Pirates did horribly and Cars never got out of beta due to design and (from what I understand) technical problems.

I doubt they will release a Star Wars MMO anytime soon.

  • Hicks64

Star Wars + MMO should be printing money. So IMO if the f2p transition doesn’t pan out for swtor the Star Wars license should not be renewed and a new MMO should be worked on asap. An MMO with content/endgame that’ll keep players playing more than 3 months (ideally years) + merchandise/cosmetic cash shop = dolla dolla bills and Disney likes $$$.

  • http://twitter.com/Fursnake Andrew Witt

You seriously need to change the word “Will” in the title of this to “May”. Or put a question mark at the end of it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Byrne/100001642673542 Michael Byrne

:( These links kind of prove people’s points about a misleading title. Each of the titles you linked are clearly opinion based and advertise that (most by using the word “Why”). “Why the Disney Deal Will Lead to a New Star Wars MMO” shows speculation, “Disney Deal Will Lead to a New Star Wars MMO” and even worse the Facebook headline “There Will be A New Star Wars MMO”  have no speculative connotation. It seems like a view grab, and to be honest Jason, most of the time your content doesn’t need that type of tactic because it is usually worth watching/reading and is also entertaining on its own merits.
    Thanks! :)

I would enjoy Jason doing a weekly opinion article.

misleading article title is misleading -_-

and i do kinda agree with mr winter in his reasoning but i would rather them pour money into swtor and revamp it with better end game quaily of life things and maybe just maybe a whole new dev staff.  but a whole new mmo altogether, nah swtor is bad off but its not that bad off.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Hargrave/100003202374593 Shawn Hargrave

ive had enough star wars mmo to last me a life time it always comes down to stupidity and imcompetence.

if i was disney i would shut down swtor refund the peopls box purchase. Make a public apology and i would not let james ohlen or gabe ametegelo or damion schuebrt touch another  star wars mmo.

Disney should just make a deal with blizzard to make the star wars mmo and make it swg 2 with wow features.

All in all there could be 20 new star wars mmo’s all i want is 1 good one that seems to be an impossible task

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Disney doesn’t actually own the game SWTOR, just the IP for Star Wars.  I suspect Disney will continue to cash the checks from EA.

The real question is would Disney pull the license from EA or will EA decide the game is not make enough money to justify the royalty payments to Disney.

  • http://twitter.com/AisarGaming Aisar

I have personally had more than enough of Star Wars at this point.  I did not like SWG and after level 40 I was tired of TOR.  Lightsabres are awesome, but I am ready for something else.  I’ll be playing my 10 toons in WoW until then.

Then again…in 10 years…things could be quite different.

  • 7BitBrian

Honestly, for making a new Starwars MMO, I would pick CCP above all other developers. Somehow I just know they’d get it right, with the right mix of sandbox and theme park and able to make it actually “feel” like Starwars.

Put any other “Triple A” or “big” company behind it and you’ll probably end up with another SWTOR.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

I could not imagine what playing a smugger would be like in a CCP run Star Wars MMO.

      • 7BitBrian

        Amazing of course.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Hargrave/100003202374593 Shawn Hargrave

like it said its not so much about having competing star wars mmo’s its about having 1 “good” one. After the stupidity and incompetence ive experienced with swtor i dont believe well ever have a “good” star wars mmo. In order to have a good star wars mmo you need to have people who are star wars fans second you need to have people that understand mmo’s swtor had niether of these things.

Galaxies was good in the character creation and selection but towards its end they tryed to turn it into what swtor is now which means poodoo.

I really hope disney turns off swtor its just such a sad pos game = (

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JD5RIAPTFFZFIF3DCNYVVG7NIQ Kyle Bohannon

if you say they made 120 million out of the gate in game sales and the budge was between 200-300 million how is that not a sizeable dent? add in the subscription fees and id be surprised if they didnt make well over 80% of the money back.

im not going to argue that swtor was underwhelming for some but to call the game mediocre is a tad insulting. i love the game, and still enjoy playing it from time to time. lets face the facts, they released a WoW-BC type game at a time when a majority of mmo customers were looking to get away from those types of games. i also believe they probably should have waited another 3-6 months to release it but i suspect EA told them to release it or theres going to be consequences.

i think that the questing in this game is underrated, the class balance has/is fairly decent (when compared to some other games), the crafting system is pretty different with the ability to have your companions gather resources/craft or yourself do it and the voiceacting is pretty awesome. call me a fanboy or fanatic its my opinion

tl:dr yea its possible they might release another star wars mmo, but i detect a slight bit of anger towards swtor.

edit : oh and by the way the title is a tad misleading, with the way you read the title you make it sound as if the deal with disney is an automatic guarentee that a new star wars mmo is fact instead of opinion

  • http://twitter.com/NerdnGeekInc Raven Frosth

Hmm the game was released prematurely I’ll put the whole blame on EA, they wanted to do that for one reason only, Give Bioware a Bad Rap, Some of you EA lovers might not agree with that suppose accusation.  But if it ever come out that EA wanted to derail the Bioware Brand Name of creating a failed game why not.  Yes EA might take a small smudge hit for it, but nothing that will cost em that much Pride.  But it will hurt the Bioware Community more then it will EA.  So if in the near future the Company goes out of business, nobody will care much for it.  Bioware as a single Entity was a good Company but as soon they got merged with EA things started tearing apart with in the 2 companies.  I’m wondering why the Dr.’s Left the Building, because maybe they didn’t want to deal with EA’s Bull. But that is only a speculation on my part.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a Good game, replaying the 8 characters to lvl 50 isn’t so awful as some people think it is. And I’ll take SWTOR over WoW leveling curve.  Spend 7 years in WoW, that game is Played out,  Nothing new can come out of the game unless you think rehashed content is something new?  I’ve been playing SWTOR on 2 different realms so now I have 16 Characters lol :) .  And I’m NOT bored with it Yet.  The problems don’t lie solely on the game but also it depends on the type of player you are.  First of All this SWTOR MMO is not for every average MMO player because people have a tendency to compare to other games out there that been out for more then 6+ years, If the game doesn’t benefit your ego then right away you bash the game how it sucks, and so on and so forth.

Beta testing is a good thing but if you give people the time to experience the game while is in beta instead testing the game, they’re playing to game and not looking for bugs to be fixed.  For ages I’ve been trying get into Beta testing and if you didn’t know anything about some type of programing knowledge you wasn’t going to get hired for it.  Now these days it don’t matter anymore.  You can be 5 years old and companies will let you in if you have a CD Key or someone has pre purchased the game for you.

Greed drives Companies Mad, EA, Activision, Blizzard  etc.. as well catering to the younger audience, where’s the game that was suppose to be Rated for Adults and not rated for 5 year old kids.  But EA wanted to make the money back they spend on the V/O and Great Cinematics which to me is a cool concept,  I wish there was more MMO’s that are driven by V/O & cinematics with their own selectable responses instead reading a Shopping list of how many rats I have to kill or where can I find the Bunny Rabbit.   The game is very emursive and sucks you in, like crack :) .

And why would Walt Disney pull the Star Wars MMO down for, It’s nothing wrong with it.  It plays well,  I might not agree with the F2P model I think EA is trying to come up with a way to sink more money out of the players,  And I call it EA because Bioware has no say so in this matter anymore since the Original Owners left the Company.  And another thing too Disney has nothing to do with EA/Bioware because they’d have to rewrite all the contracts for all the parties included and not just Lucas Arts.  To take any effect for the new company and the legal ramifications at least 2 years, so by then the SWTOR game it might be still in effect and growing stronger or be a forgotten thing from the past.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Hargrave/100003202374593 Shawn Hargrave

Nothing wrong with it LMAO AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brandon-Evans/1603660859 Brandon Evans

I don’t see it.  EA had no reason to make Bio-Ware look bad,  they did however have 200 million or so dollars invested in the SWTOR project over the coruse of many years and they wanted to see a return on that investment.  EA however would not shoot it self in the foot.

    • DoctorOverlord

People keep saying SWTOR is a good game but I personally never enjoyed playing it.     Certainly there will be people who do enjoy it like yourself, but it seems that SWTOR is suffering from an ability to appeal to a truly broad audience.

And that could be the greatest challenge for any Star Wars MMO.   The Star Wars IP has managed to appeal to such an incredibly broad audience and gamers will expect any Star Wars MMO to be able to manage to do the same.

And that might simply be impossible for any MMO to manage.

    • David Knapp

The rush was most likely an IP rights thing… often they have a built in “you owe us more if you don’t use it by X/X/XXXX” date.  So to keep the IP relevant, and not being “squatted”.

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Or even have the SW license yanked because they did not release the game in 2011.

  • DoctorOverlord

    Interesting theory and certainly plausible.

If Disney can repeat their success with the acquisition of Marvel, then things could look up for the Star Wars IP.   But as we’ve seen, creating an MMO is an entirely different matter.

One could see them trying yet again but I’m inclined to think we might see a continuation of the ‘Star Wars MMO curse’.     But it would be nice to be surprised and see a good MMO produced.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brandon-Evans/1603660859 Brandon Evans

Star-Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and even DnD are all huge names in the sci-fi/fantasy genre.   However just because you like Star Wars doesn’t mean your going to play SWTOR.  In fact I believe having one of these “IPs” hurts the game more then it helps.  As soon as you put one of these names on a MMO you srink your customer base.  SWTOR with all the great reviews and press only sold 1.2 million,  Guild Wars 2 sold over 2 million so far.  Being a house hold name out side the gaming world doesn’t seem to help that much as far as the MMO market goes. Not saying there is no room for these movie MMOs, just saying they need to develop this around a smaller market like EvE Online has done.  Still plenty of money to be made just not going to hold 500,000 plus players.  In fact all my friends that just got burned out on WoW but still  play MMOs now play GW2 or Rift.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Bergevin-Jr/1393526370 Jim Bergevin Jr

       SWTOR sold 2.4 million.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

The Star Wars IP did well for hype and initial sales for SWTOR, but the game was sadly fundamentally flawed.

Guild Wars 2 initial sales benefited from Arenanet’s well deserved stellar reputation and a strong Guild Wars fan base.   I had never played Guild Wars, but felt comfortable  pre-purchasing GW2 based on the Arenanet reputation.

  • http://twitter.com/Veldara Veldara

There’s just way too many MMOs out there right now, unless they can find a way to incorporate the best aspects of the top MMOs into some kind of insane concoction of awesome.  I say just make single player games for the SW franchise, they do amazingly well, better than the MMOs that’s for sure.

    • http://twitter.com/TheOpapanax Most Morbid One

way too many mediocre MMO’s.. just here for cleanup

  • jayremy

Another title or franchise Disney owns, got to love the few companies that seem to own all the media, but digressing from that another point:

SWTOR would have a been very interesting and fun if they actually made the game like their tried and true Mass Effect Series. Bioware developers know how to make a Mass Effect game, the play style has been somewhat popular, relatively unique and vastly different on the MMO market. It would be more like an “action combat” game. Believe me Mass Effect 3 Mulitplayer has a good way of keeping players playing with very minimal content compared to MMOs while still remaining fun if they could only expand that to MMO standards.

Besides it doesn’t make sense to play a starwars game with guns you don’t have to aim and no legitimate use of in game physics of any sort like knockbacks and stagger effects that make sense. Bioware already had the structure down and should’ve stuck to it.

I want to see a game where using a lightsaber actually feels as badass as it can using one, shooting a gun actually feels like a shooter, using the force actually as a “I used the force”  type effect on enemies and environment.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Hargrave/100003202374593 Shawn Hargrave

Thats a good point in gw2 you actually aim and use siege weapons and in swtor you cant control or shoot the turrets it auto does it pretty stupid.

The other thing is the narrow minded view of how tor was made and how tor is. They were so fixated on making it exactly like the older kotors which werent online and not understanding the difference lol.

The only way i could think of to make tor a “REAL” mmo insted of kotor 3 would be to shut it down and redsign the whole game and worlds lol. I dont see that ever happening.

  • Avaloner31

I dont think there will be another Star Wars MMORPG for atleast 7-12 years. There have been two Star Wars MMO’s and both “failed”, in that they did not become the mega success people thought even if they break even eventually. And in all honesty Star Wars is not the IP it once was to alot of people. Unless Disney makes more Star Wars movies that attrack new audiances (kids) then I really can’t see a Star Wars MMO being a success.

  • Revanhavoc

I think the future question will be:

Is an MMO the most profitable video game business model to pursue?

Activision seems to dominate the MMO and the shooter, with EA controlling the sports game. The RPG dominance in the market has been more fluid, but in my mind, the RPG has come the closest to re-producing the penultimate video game experience - able to more effectively combine elements of several different genres.

The peak of the mountain is reserved for that game which combines the community, the intense combat, the compeition and the depth that each of the above mentioned genres represents.

A Star Wars game, with the deep lore and so many competitive opportunities, from pod-racing, to card games, to all out warfare, has a chance at completing the four squares of the ‘next-gen game I describe. Create a community, develop great combat, fine tune competiton, then focus on depth.

The Biowares, the GTAs, the Elder Scrolls, various MMOs and sports games…They’ve all only scratched the surface of what they could potentially achieve.

Will any of this ever happen…?

    That’s a big ’maybe’.

  • http://twitter.com/lifensoul Steven Whiting

If the new movies make money, maybe, if they don’t, then no.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gregory.jackson.1213 Gregory Jackson

If course the new movies will make money… It’s Star Wars. The irony will be when Disney does a better job expanding upon the saga than Lucas did. Yes, it was lucas’s vision, and as such he had every right to make whatever changes he wanted to make, But an entire generation of millions of fans were satisfied with the wa the classic trilogy originally played out. They know Han shot first. They know that Jar Jar Binks did not always exist. They know that Vader didn’t scream “NOOOOO!!!” before tossing Ol’ Palpy into the reactor shaft. New visuals added in the special editions were fine, and worked to give the classic films a more contemporary feel, so the contrast would not be so massive between Episode VI and I.

As long as Disney treats Lucasfilm IPs the way they have so far been treating Marvel IPs, I think that we’ll have some good new Star Wars movies for years to come… And let us hope that the games those movies inevitably spawn will be good as well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Hargrave/100003202374593 Shawn Hargrave

It boils down to cranking out content and the programmers competency and understanding level.

So far with swg and swtor they seemed to just sit on the name plate and do very little with the IP. In order for any future star wars mmo to be good and worth a dam theyll need to crank out content on a regular basis and really invest into the game.

Swg – Had the star wars world feel to it awesome space

swtor – We have voice overs and legacy

future  star wars mmo – We have sandbox we have playable wookies, rodians. We have end game content over 20 raids and open world objective based pvp fight over planetary control! Open world space pvp like swg! Have your own player housing and store to sell your own goods! Best part is its all working and playable. Were not talking about giving you content here it is on a timely manner.

  • StigtriX

The real problem with SWTOR is that it feels so limited. It’s not an open world MMO, there’s too many places with loading and the paths you are forced to choose are often quite narrow. It’s not as bad as AION, but still… The extremely dumb AI, limited NPC models and lacklustre customization don’t help either. If I’m playing a MMO, I want it to feel big and alive. If I want a more focused experience, I’ll go for a single-player RPG or action game. The biggest problem with the game is that the engine is a mess. There are MMOs out there with better graphics and bigger worlds with less engine related problems, like RIFT.

The F2P version of the game is also appalling. Who would want to play such a limited version of an already limited game? The MMO games with most success in the F2P genre offer paid boosts and cosmetic features, but don’t limit exploration or gameplay. Until EA and BioWare realize this and make the game a true F2P MMO, they will have a tough time.

Do any of you know what a real MMO is? or has the narrow minds of today’s companies  crushed your brain cells towards something of shit?….bring back SWG…that is all if any of you trend suffers know…SWG had the most to offer…too bad no one wanted to offer it the fucking light it needed….

    • http://www.facebook.com/gregory.jackson.1213 Gregory Jackson

The biggest mistake that SOE made was insisting on setting SWG in the middle of the classic trilogy era, which was forbidden forn even Expanded Universe authors to write about, with the only exception being Shadows of the Empire.

Had it been me, I would have set it immediately following Return of the Jedi. Of courser that would have meant Star Wars without Darth Vader and the Emperor… But the Expanded Universe in games, books, and comics existed for many many years and captured the imagination of millions, whether or not they were fans of Kevin J. Anderson’s novels… SWG could have and should have been THE reboot of the EU in digital online interactive entertainment form.

And if there is to be a new SWG-like MMO, I would hope they bring Raph Koster back to head it up. And instead of keeping the development team on a tight leash, put the leash on the marketing department. They are the ones who printed the box description of the game in a way that made it sound like Jedi was playable out of the box rather than an unlockable gameplay path. But rather than taking responsibility for that blunder, the decision was made to make it easier to unlock Jedi, and in the process they obliterated the symbiotic relationship between the different playstyles which was the foundations for one of the strongest MMO communities (in and out of the game) that I have ever been a part of.

The NGE was Lucas Arts idea, as declared by Nancy McIntyre, aka Miss “we’re going to dumb down SWG because there’s too much to read, and then Im going to quit SOE to work on educational games for kids”. The NGE was the exact opposite of what Lucas Arts said it would be. The game never recovered.

Imo, Swg certainly had thrice more to offer than Tor. Heck, you can even compare graphics, even with the age differences, and Swg still competes with Tor and Mmo’s today (was very dissapointed with Tor’s textures, especially for player gear).

I really think, honestly, after so many people, including myself, having found themselves being hugely let down by Tor, that putting Swg back up on the servers for 15 bucks a month could actually be huge. Think about all of the people that left Tor that never played Swg, but only heard it *apparently* was ten times better, people that only saw videos of the vast array of content Swg offered, but never tried it.

An Mmo will always be an Mmo, a company will never be able to dump the funds in to create both mass high detailed Sp style content plus create a vast universe with massive playing fields that are sandbox like (both planets and space). Only so much is reasonably doable. Bothering to spend mass volumes of time and money on fancy voice overs, fancy movies and level up quests at the sacrifice of the core gameplay aspects (sandbox style gameplay) for an Mmo Imo is a recipe for disaster. It’s not just the level up content that keeps an Mmo alive, essentially, in the end, it’s the end game content. Furthermore, what Tor did with the theme of the game, and the style of quests, just going a completely opposite direction from Swg, making the game in cartoon style, quests that were poorly crafted and very unbelievable, almost no character customization options, list goes on.

Swg, on the other hand, recognized the fact that it was an *Mmo*, and made full use of the core essential Mmo elements, in fact, to the extreme. Detailed Pc customization, nearly unlimited options to “go your own way” in your path while leveling, vast varieties of weapons, gear, and vehicles to attain in order to outfit your character the way *you* want to, in your own unique way. Vast areas of play on each planet, you could do your quests, or just go find a good spot somewhere and hunt for xp. Player cities, placing your own house, could even decorate your own house or ship. Provided you were on a good server, most cities were bustling with player activity, with big player cities scattering the landscape around them. It’s getting late.. I could go on for hours lol. Space was awesome, never seen another Mmo nor singple player game (honestly) that has Sci-Fi space content that compares, it really was that good.

Sometimes I think that maybe Swg was just never truly recognized for what it was, until it was gone. What was it Imo? The most unique, vast, freedom giving, detailed, enjoyable (fun) Mmo I’ve ever played.

IF there is to be a new Star Wars MMO, I hope that it will be sandbox like SWG.We need an MMO that lets us shape the gameworld, rather than just being dragged along from point A to B to C the way every MMO since WoW has tried to.
