Trion Teases New Rift Expansion?

The people over at Trion have been super busy lately.  They announced the upcoming Rift three-faction PvP which is currently available on their public test server and now it looks like they’ve taken to sending strange packages to PC Gamer.

I think they might need some sleep.

The package that arrived at PC Gamer was a wooden box marked with the words “A Storm Is Brewing”.  Inside the box they found the following:

  • two posters depicting raids in both World War II and the American Civil War
  • a liquid level marked with the number 10
  • four soles of shoes, six rusty key rings along with one golden one marked “Port Tempest”
  • a felt bag containing five glass prisms of different sizes
  • a red, hooded cloak

PC Gamer writer T.J. Hafer was assigned the task of figuring out what all these items meant and after some deduction decided that all together the items equal a new expansion for Rift.  And if Trion isn’t just messing with him — the expansion will feature a 10-level cap increase, two raids, four additonal souls, six more areas, a new city named Port Tempest and something to use Prisms on.

If Hafer is right about all of this, I expect to see some of these things popping up on the public test server sometime in the future.

Trion Teases New Rift Expansion?

Sweet! What a great way to get interest back into the game

  • 7BitBrian

It’d be cool. I’ve always felt Rift was a very good game and worth more attention that it seems to get.

So Trion is working on a Rift expansion, a MMORTS (End of Nations) which should come out in 2012 and Defiance?  Good for them.

Do you even have a life Sharuko?

      • Sharuko

        Just one.  Thanks for asking.

Seems like the appropriate amount. Unless you’re a cat.

You mean two? One in WoW and one in Tera..

So Rift is releasing an expansion now, I give them props for trying everything to pull there game outta the hole its in, but with Tera, SWTOR & WoW out and Guild Wars 2 & Mists of Pandaria expansion on the horizon I really don’t think an expansion will help or have pple try Rift again and that applies to any MMO. Its just a tease for all know it could be something totally different from an expansion. If Rift does wanna survive in the market I think there best option would be to drop from P2P and try out the B2P/F2P model than maybe more pple will give the game a try.

Even if WoW drops to to 7 – 9 Mill its still the biggest sub based game regardless where the subs are and I still bet US & EU seperately prbly have 2 – 3 mill subs each in there respected regions and they still have more subs than any other game out there, also EA & Activision will never allow BioWare & Blizzard to move SWTOR & WoW from P2P to B2P/F2P models and we all know that from the case Warhammer Online is in. I do believe when a game like Rift and the state of it (Playerbase wise) if it wants to still compete, Trion should consider B2P/F2P with or without P2W is the best option for there game, because its either things get better for a short time or things will get worse regardless on what they do.

Where are people getting their info from? Rift’s community has been steady even with SWTOR’s launch and all the other hype of recent games. I don’t play Rift anymore but I am thinking about going back and I am not finding any of this evidence that people are saying it is in a “hole” so I’m curious where it’s coming from.

Just google Rift Subscriptions 2012.  Made me a little sad.

        • ChristopherMitchell1

Did, just found more evidence that they are starting to go up….

          • http://twitter.com/Luke_Malcolm Luke Malcolm

I looked to and the only reason there going up cause there sub model is only 12.99 for 3 months and you got a free month after that. Sounds more like desperation to me.

          • Guest

Except that WoW and most other games have the same model, buy more months at a time and get a small discount. The free month doesn’t even apply till ur time runs out already. Let’s see what other games have had to give away free game time in a much shorter amount of time… SWTOR for one. Rift devs have been nothing but amazing to their player base so a free month if you sub long enough sounds more like a thank you from them and I think more games should reward subbers similarly.

Also you admitted to it going up and not down so congratz! Accidental admittance of wrongness is accidental.

Doesn’t Trion sound like a cheap ass by not putting 10 bubble levels in the box, instead of putting a single bubble level with a post-it.  BTW, this gave GamebreakerTV another view on their commericals.

How many bugs were in the package?

Nah, sounds like some old Sicillian curse. Watch your backs.

At least it wasn’t a **** in a box… and yeah, I censored that myself because I figure the people here can read between the lines.

Oh hey one thing I should add is that posters depicting WWII and Civil War ‘raids’ might not mean  PvE raids, but, rather PvP BGs. I mean, aren’t wars PvP battles – especially the civil war? Rift might be adding large-scale PvPvP arenas to fit with the 3-faction PvP they’ve introduced.

  • DoctorOverlord

Amusing way to hint at their future plans.   Good to see RIFTS still going, the MMO genre needs to prove there is room for more games.

    fwiw
polesti was not a raid, it was a disaster.
    Black Sunday, they called it.
53 10 man crews never made it home from what was a snafu almost from the getgo.
Our codes had been cracked, there was no element of surprise.

When the crews being briefed heard “Daylight” and “Low Level” in the same sentence, some of them vomited.

To close to the deck to jump, and at 210 mph, into burning oil, it wouldn’t have mattered anyway.
Nothing like being pinned to the inside of a wildly spinning fuselage as it plummets into the burning hell you helped create.

War is Hell, and The “Men” on both sides were not men and women, they were Kids.

We owe it to them all to practice peace & tolerance at every possible turn,
    IMHO.

I’m sure she wouldn’t mind a little bit of head in her box.
