Are WoW's Racials Unfair?

There has been discussion on the European forums today about one topic that keeps coming back like an old penny. WoW racials are always sources of controversy, because of people feeling they’re overpowered or underpowered in given situations.

The specific racial under fire here is the human racial Every Man For Himself. A forum post questions whether this racial is so overpowered as to merit removal or amendment. Nakatoir’s response to that post was as follows:

Racials have an intrinsic inequality; it’s very hard to get away from that if we want to make them all very distinctive at the same time. I wouldn’t dare to insult your intelligence by defending that racials are all perfectly balanced. Clearly they are not, but we also need to realize that there are two sides to this game, and for PvE for example, EMFH suddenly just doesn’t seem so op anymore, except on very specific encounters where a “PvP trinket” effect would give you more uptime.

It has been stated before that devs aren’t too happy about racials and our most distinguishable anthropomorphic crabbie even went so far as to say that if he were to design WoW from scratch, there would be no racials. The thing is, racials have been a part of the game for so long that everyone likes them and is used to the differentiation they provide, racials were designed with the intent of being some of the most distinctive abilities in the game, shaping distinct traits and providing identity to each of the different races.

That is not to say that there’s nothing we can do about it, far from that, devs are already aware of this issue so you already have their attention, perfecting balance is part of the persistent balancing and tuning of WoW. Keep providing us with feedback and suggestions for different racial implementations that you feel are balanced and highly distinctive both for PvE and PvP at the same time, and I’m sure devs will appreciate it, good ideas are always welcome here at Blizzard and many good ideas that make it into our games can actually be traced back to our community.

Nakatoir’s point regarding the PvE viability of Every Man For Himself is very reasonable, given that outside of specific raid situations it is largely useless. But while it’s true that many other racials on the alliance side are totally useless in PvE as well as largely useless in PvP, the opposite could certainly be said for Horde racials.

The most recent world first race has seen Method, the last remaining of the top guilds in 25-man raiding who were on the Alliance side, change to Horde, to access the superior racials. Horde racials have long been thought of as the superior choice for raiding, with the various DPS boosts they provide, such as Berserker Rage or Blood Fury, and the addition of Touch of the Grave has made Undead very strong indeed for tanking.

The question more ought to be whether any races are underplayed because of their racials, whether there are any racials which are genuinely useless and add nothing to any gameplay situation. It seems that any racial which can remove CC is strong, such as the Human racial, Undead racial, or the Gnome racial to an extent. Racials which increase DPS such as the aforementioned Orc and Troll racials clearly have a use, as do ones which provide a CC such as Quaking Palm, Arcane Torrent or War Stomp. The use of Dwarves’ Stoneform is situational, but definitely beneficial, and the same applies for the Night Elf Shadowmeld, which does have its occasional uses in arena or as wipe recovery. The Worgen Speed Boost has its moments, in PvP, as has the Goblin Rocket Jump, which provides excellent mobility.

The least useful of these are probably Gnomes’ Escape Artist, Night Elf Shadowmeld and Dwarf Stoneform, whose uses are very situational. What’s your take on these racials? Are they totally useless? And what would you change?

Guild Wars 2 racials offer an interesting alternative, where the racial abilities can’t be used in PvP combat. Is this a viable alternative?

Are WoW's Racials Unfair?

    Short term answer…. Yep.
I think Racials should not exist that way people can choose a race based off the cosmetic appeal.

  • http://twitter.com/Hagg3r Michael

Olivia continues to show her ignorance. Seriously don’t even mention GW2; you know barely anything about it. The racials in GW2 can be used everywhere but structured pvp.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Zeazin Craig Leon-Barr Milne

It’s not that big a deal really for the hug majority of people. There’s only a very very small group of people in the overall subscriber base that worries about min maxing to that extent. Got a blue space goat as my main, racial sucks horribly but I don’t really mind. I’ll take oversized shoulder pieces and tenta-beards any day over worrying about racials.

  • http://twitter.com/Deadalon Deadalon

Racials are good way for BLizzard to make extra money by changing them regularly for min maxers.  In terms of balance… they are still a nightmare to manage but money wins every day at Blizzard these days.

  • http://twitter.com/NerdnGeekInc Raven Frosth

I Remember when Trion Worlds Released Rift Originally, the Character racials were extremely OP, and then they got nerfed and some got taken out.

  • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Horde racials are overall better for PVE.  Alliance racials are overall better for PvP.

The Horde racials typically give more survivalbility and dps in raids.

The human racial Every Man for Himself is OP for PvP.
The Night Elf racial Shadowmeld is OP in PvP, especially world PvP.  Anything that can break combat is seriously over powered.
Guild Wars 2 doesn’t have races assigned to PvP factions, so again Guild Wars 2 really doesn’t have any standing in this discussion.  The same available races are on all sides of  sPvP and WvW.A more valid comparison is SWTOR with the two distinct factions of the Empire and the Alliance.  While abilities are generally mirrored between the factions, there are minor imbalances between certain classes. If I remember racials are simply cosmetic in SWTOR.

    • 7BitBrian

Nah when SWTOR launched the racials were so imbalance if you didn’t play Sith you lost period. It was all over the forums at launch.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JD5RIAPTFFZFIF3DCNYVVG7NIQ Kyle Bohannon

lol, that gave me a good chuckle for the evening, thanks

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Racials, for the most part were fairly simple.  Salutes, cheers, slapping a companion.

I agree there was some class balance issues, but they seem to fix most of those problems.

        • 7BitBrian

Yea sorry, I meant classes basically, Sith classes were down right better than their counterparts, with exact copy skills but the sith version having a higher number.

          • Demi_God

The lightsaber cut both ways, with mirror class balance.  Mortar volley was stronger than death from above for the same reason force lightning was more powerful than force telekinesis because slight tenths of a second differences between the animation and the calculations.

    • JJversion1

I’m not going to argue whether or not EMFH is OP or not, I’m just pointing out that there are also horde racials that are pretty OP in PvP themselves. The BE silence and the Tauren stun are OP based on the fact that they are AoE based instead of Single target or Self target. Any racials that are AoE based are OP in PvP and can upset the balance of PvP. However I will admit that the racials are more balanced than they have ever been, anyone who has been playing since TBC would know this. PvP in TBC was a nightmare and seriously unbalanced as far as racials were concerned.

  • CheveyoSD

Get rid of racials. Problem solved.
There will be a huge upsurge of whining on the forums, but it’ll die down in a week or two. People will probably rage-cancel their sub. They’ll be back within a week.

    • Yakeshi

      I agree completely.

  • Layithen

A great way to balance racials without loosing “flavor” or making the game “dull” by homogenization is through cosmetics. Changing the racials so they aren’t that diverse stat wise or use wise (EMFH) but having them cause their characters to look a certain way (through spells, auras maybe, size or hell even added background music could put more flavor to the game than the racials even do now. Gamers love some cosmetic/appearance changers and diversity in the overall way their characters look.

  • http://twitter.com/Nathiest Nathiest

FUCK NO. End of stupid ass discussion. /everymanforhimself

  • http://twitter.com/superponte Michael Ponte

The only problem Blizz will have with racials is finding the right balance…to give alliance the advantage, and then Horde again, and then Alliance…. to maximize faction change profits

  • http://www.facebook.com/danjal1987 Danjal Veskandar

From a competative point of view racials are by default either useless or unbalanced….
Either everyone gets the same or similar things, or everyone gets something that serves no purpose other then an outward different appearance.

From a roleplay point of view however they add a lot of versatility to games.
And while traits available to all races might seem more fair, I do think racials end up being a good addition to most games out there.

If your race does nothing else then outward appearance then for all intents and purposes you might aswell have a single race. Same goes for classes btw, if each class serves the same purpose with only different applications of the same skills you might just aswell have a single class.

So at the end of the day I think racials are NOT a bad thing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-T-Russell/667898328 Mark T. Russell

I don’t think they need to do anything with them. The only guilds that care about racial abilities for PVE are the top end guilds. I do not PVP much myself, but Every Man shouldn’t be a problem anyway, because if you aren’t playing a Gnome, you are doing it wrong! And their racial is not so cool btw :P

  • Remeer

Here’s a simple solution, instead of making racial abilities beneficial, make them hazardous. For example, when someone uses everyman for themselves, it doesn’t just free them, it makes them run in fear for 5 or 8 seconds, breaking all movement impairing effects yes, but isn’t that what’s suppose to happen when it’s every man for themselves? Another example, War Stomp, make it also stun the Tauren.

Basically, instead of making things ideal, make every plus give a minus.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JD5RIAPTFFZFIF3DCNYVVG7NIQ Kyle Bohannon

are they balanced no? and they most likely never will. but i dont think theyre needed to be overhauled to any real degree. the only people who care about these sorts of things are the top what 1-2%? its really more trouble than its worth to sit down and balance everything around an area such a small percentage care about.

i dont very sersiously that joe schmoe who just hit level 35 on hits orc hunter really cares, hell might not even know, that his pets do a little more damage. for the everyday gamer racials mean very little in my honest opinion and to the point that theyre most likely not going to ever consider spending any money to faction swap to a different race.

do you know who will though? those 1-2%, those people lookin to gain every possible edge and blizzard will have no problem taking their money and the people coughing up the money will have no problem paying it as they will somehow feel satisfaied.

maybe im lookin at it the wrong way, maybe its too simplistic but i start to latch on to this idea that blizzard wants to walk a medium line in fixing balancing issues and letting the playerbase fix the other half by giving them money. might be a tin foil hat sunject, ive been drinkin

They could just keep the racials ”quality of life” things like with the goblin bank thing, instead of ones that simply give you a stats boost or pvp advantage, give +10 to different professions for each race or specific mounts that each race only can use. There is a lot of things they can do to each race without directly effecting their pvp or pve advantages.

  • Deadnstien

The only time I have ever used EMFH in PvE is in Wailing Caverns with all the Druids who like to sleep you.

That being said personally I think racials like the talent system should never have been put in the game to start with. I agree though again like the talent system it’s to late to remove them, but again like the talent system I see no reason not to overhaul them. Make them purely cosmetic or profession based or at the very least just buffs that are small enough that they have a minor impact on end game anything.

  • http://twitter.com/Hagg3r Michael

Olivia, come on already. I noticed you edited the article so that it says “pvp combat”. This is not entirely true still, as PvP combat can be WvW and in WvW you can use the abilities in combat. GW2 racials can be used everywhere but STRUCTURED pvp.

    • Demi_God

       Lose the bad attitude.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

humans… like this thing for reputation and free trinket.

  • Morturion

It might be me, but Class balance in PvP seems a bigger issue then the racial skills :p

  • JJversion1

I don’t feel that they should get rid of Racials, just adjust them (like they did for Colossus Smash) to where they function differently in PvP then they do in PvE or just disable them completely for PvP and make them PvE use only. This would solve alot of the problems, I feel, for PvP w/o, necessarily, changing the flavor of the race that you choose.

  • http://twitter.com/Luke_Malcolm Luke Malcolm

I honestly think they should be removed.

  • http://twitter.com/elpewpew Ronald Erazo ಠ_ರೃ

It’s the imbalance among the racials what makes that particular race appealing, for example choosing an Orc Warlock for the Command passive that gives extra 2% in damage to pets. Or Goblins with their 1% increase to attack and cast speed.

If they’re gonna work on racials they should look at some of the weakest to make that particular race more appealing. So in my opinion racials are a good thing, some may need a little tweaking but it’s the diference between them what makes class/race choice appealing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/stephen.roseii Stephen Ellis Rose II

I love the Blood Elf racial: Arcane Torrent.

It’s not too O.P. in PvP, at most its a few silences at the same time, (2, maybe 3 if they are all clustered and you can manage to jump inbetween them all) but it’s great for
    hunters, rogues and healers alike.
Hunters and Rogues can regain their Energy, and interrupt that life-saving heal to KO their opponent.
Healers getting more mana returned just makes sense.

In PvE, it’s great for heals AND tanks as well. Tanks can pull those pesky casters into their AOE effects and melee them down without having to move the whole mob around and make the dps pull their hair out.
    And heals…well, mana is nice.

Note: Read the whole post before you incoherently respond.

The Human racial isn’t as overpowered as people make it out to be. Horde on use and passive racials are more powerful because they give damage, crowd control, crowd control duration reduction, hard crowd control breaks that stack with trinket, etc.

Alliance have the short end of the stick for interesting PvP racials, that is why Human is preferred. Horde on use and passive racials are all very much more viable for PvP compared to the variety that Alliance has at their disposal.

If you look at Blizzards Arena Tournaments at Blizzcon for example, there is quiet the variety of races and quiet the balanced mix of the two factions team wise. If you look at live 3v3 Arena rankings, there are almost equal representation of Horde and Alliance teams in the top 10, Horde being slightly more represented with 6/10 for top 10 and 12/20 for top 20.

Racials don’t win you a match, player skill does. You can have EMFH and still get beat because the other player was better than you or the other team was working together better than yours. It’s not about damage either, its about how you play your character and use the right abilities at the right time instead of blowing it all in one macro for example or taking advantage of some broken mechanics/FoTM. Racials don’t give you skill, so don’t use them as a crutch to point the blame for your loss.

While I am a strong believer in the freedom trinket being a baseline racial for everyone, I also want Alliance racials to be made on par with Hordes to compensate and to get players into their favourite races without feeling that they have the short end of the stick just because of the racials possessed by the faction.

    • http://www.facebook.com/MulletManJeff Jeff Canafax

My ONLY comment. LEARN TO SPELL!!!  there is a MAJOR difference between what you meant to type “QUITE” and what you actually typed “QUIET”.

  • http://twitter.com/MiZTiiX MiZTiiX

    no.

  • http://twitter.com/MiZTiiX MiZTiiX

dont talk about gw2 constantly…its really annoying

  • Josh Rosenvelt

According to Method they wouldn’t of been able to down a certain boss without having switched to horde.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/Q323LZHG6N6RXWYHCJDXVVX654 Zaronis

Both of my mains are Night Elves, and I do arenas on them. One of my partners is a rogue, and before shroud on concealment wears off I will shadowmeld somewhere out of the way. This gives us the luxury of choosing when to engage both opponents. In a raid setting I can drop combat from a boss and get off a mass resurrection, with the added bonus of NOT dying like everyone else. Just the hunter and myself survive.

How would I change racials? Both Alliance and Horde would have racials that can be considered on par. Not identical, but similar, like EMfH and WotF. The Alliance could use a few AoE racials, . I must admit that I don’t play Horde and I can’t say what they would like. Except Tauren. Tauren want Plainsrunning to be reintroduced and work like Running Wild. A non-stacking passive that increases their unmounted speed by about 8% would also be welcome.
