Bethesda hires former SW:ToR Executive Producer
8 Comments

News broke from Bethesda today that former SW:TOR executive producer Rich Vogel has officially joined them at their newly opened Battlecry Studio in Austin, Texas.

In a statement released on the Bethsoft website, both Bethesda and Mr. Vogel seem excited about this new partnership:

“I have always admired and respected Bethesda’s approach to making great, original games,” said Vogel. “It’s a belief and passion I share, and I’m looking forward to building a team of high quality developers who want to bring that same commitment and creative energy to the games we’ll be creating”

Vlatko Andonov, President of Bethesda Softworks had this to say about his new hire:

“We are very pleased to have someone with Rich’s vast experience join us at Bethesda. Rich has a history of building and managing talented development teams and bringing high quality games to market, and we look forward to working with him on a new exciting project.”

Vogel had spent 7 of his 20 plus years in game development, at Bioware until July. He has a lot of MMO history under his belt, having worked on some of the most important MMOs in history, including Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies, and Meridian 59.

Neither Bethesda or Mr. Vogel are letting slip what exactly they’re working on over there at the Austin studio, but given his pedigree in MMO building, it’s safe to guess it might be something in that vein.

elder scrolls online or fallout online. Really suck that EA and Bioware mis-managed the hell out of SW:TOR.

I didn’t want to believe that SW:TOR would fall so far so fast but once the critical layoffs ( not just post-launch down-sizing) started a few weeks after they to the community they intended to keep the team together was when I left too.

I never thought a game having everything good from KoToR and multiplayer could be anything but awesome, but unfortunately the EA taint is more than just rumor and something about them coming onboard does really ruin games.

Hopefully Bethesda can properly leverage this hire and make the first  MMO for the Oculus Rift and be truly immersive

Aslong as they don’t copy the same failed endgame SWTOR and Wow had in Cata and rather go the BC route with linear progress with more content and 1 raid size!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait…What great Original Games have Bethesda made?

They’ve made the same game over and over again since Elder Scrolls I, Daggerfall was the last game they made that wasn’t just sold on the “OH LOOK! PRETTY!” with Shit content/story/gameplay that it’s PLAYERS had to make to make the game even worth a toss.

If they would just made SWTOR play like Mass Effect, it would’ve been cool. Cursed WoW clone, I hope it wasn’t his idea to do that. Heck in a star wars universe the game should’ve had a more shooter feel or “actiony” feel to really encompass that whole phase gun shooting and jedi feeling.

What I’d like to hear is big companies getting new faces and names into the industry, people who are really fresh and want something new to be brought into the industry not dinosaurs (not implying being old). I mean the way I see it as a game developer you have a few titles you would really want to put out into the world, then what after? Once you have put your best ideas forward and seen them come to life, I don’t think you need to see it as a goal to make more ideas unless you as a gamer (one who plays, not makes) are longing for them.

I don’t think game development should be seen as a job only a passion, not something you should spend an entire career(life) doing, unless you have projects that are just that big. I am mainly speaking to producers and designers, not programmers, artists, engineers, cinematic development, QA, etc.
