I agree that launch day trailers aren’t so much a selling point for people that had no idea about the game any more, but a way to pump up those of us who are already playing/planning on playing it and try to tip the scales on a small percentage of the people who have been considering but haven’t gotten to try it yet. I have to admit, that launch trailer was pretty awesome and it’s been a LONG time since I got pumped by an MMO trailer (Burning Crusade, I believe, was the last MMO on that got me this amped). Obviously, I’m already playing Tera (lvl 40 atm), but the trailer actually gets me more curious about the lore/story of the game like Jason said…more than any of the other trailers or even playing the game did…lol. If only the actual writing lived up to the visuals.

the trailer uses the game engine, but it’s pre-rendered CGI, so it’s better than what the actual game looks like, it is just closer to the real thing than say SWTOR.

nice try, but they really need to drop the whole “True Action Combat” moniker, because it is just not true.

    Let me name a few more action games that lock you in combat/animation: God of War, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Diablo even games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

      What i’m saying is that eg God of war is an action game, Tera is an mmo. I was talking about the combat in the game and Sharuko is comparing genres.
      You can’t call everything “true action combat” just because you perform an action (as you do in all games). I need to be able to move freely about while doing it, to call the combat “true action combat) as you do in Skyrim or gw2.
      Tera is action combat, as most games are, but not “true action combat” as Skyrim or gw2.
      
      Hope that explains my view on the subject.

      But..but..if you dont see the difference between fighting while standing still, and fighting while moving, then i’m running out of ways to explain my view on the subject. I would call Tera’s combat actionish. If they added the ability to move while casting/hitting, i would call it true action combat.

      But… but… they do let you move while fighting. As I told you before the first 20 levels suck and the combat does not feel fluid at all but once you are past that it becomes much more fluid and abilities that would root you at lvl 5 won’t root you at all and the ones that do you don’t even notice because of combos… Don’t know how else to explain this concept but Tera actually has an action combat system, whether there is a ‘true’ attached to it is irrelevant.

    You were like me when I played the game for the first time and made it to lvl 10 and was just pissed off. I bitched for daaaays about the rooting and what not then thanks to my friends who were perverted and liked the jiggle physics kept me playing and then I reached the fabled lvl 20 and the game just became pretty awesome. The content you get access to is just more engaging and fun and the combat is much more fluid.
    
    Though I don’t blame you for making your judgments because I had the same ones and still think they need to improve the first 20 lvls.

Its not actually the most shall i say for lack of better terms and unwillingness to write pages on this “pure” in action combat. You like at other action games, typically those you find on console, skyrim, KoA: Reckoning, God of War, Vindictus, recent Batman titles and so on and you get often much more fluid and responsive combat.

Tera seems to kind of try to blend that in with the cooldown and hotkey system of typical target+ui based MMOs. Not saying the combat is bad for that, just not as fanciful or good as they state or perceive it to be.

I mean you look at Vindictus and their catchphrase with the game was “Physics based gameplay” kind of a weird way to put it, but it delivered heavily and the physics part you totally understand after playing it and how it weighs in.

Not particularly impressive considering I have already seen the asian trailer (youtube title is
TERA Japan – Queen of Argon: Part 1 trailer), which is basically what a lot of non-ingame footage (it’s made with the same engine, but a lot is not directly achievable ingame) came from. THAT trailer was way more kick-ass, and kind reminds you of a more regular trailer.

Awesome trailer for the best MMO of 2012 it is so refreshing to see after playing a cartoony MMO this weekend. Funny to see some comments call it CGI when 90% of it is actual gameplay footage.

But I agree the Tera Japan – Queen of Argon Part 1 trailer is better.

You can never say anything positive without poking at gw2 can you? To me it seems that you have to convince yourself, on a daily basis, that Tera is great and gw2 sucks. You know that you represent a minority that share your view, so its the inferiority complex that kicks in.

      Having played both games, I like them both way more than WoW currently,Tera has the combat and late game group content to look forward too (not much else and questing sucks). GW2′s combat and class design, perhaps was overhyped, because it really is just a more mobile version of WoW with a dodge mechanic. It has many great QoL features that other games don’t have or lack, they really cater features to the community too and have a great world to explore with things to do.

It’s funny I’m in Tera now..We got a free copy from a guy at my work after he played G2 this weekend.. and All I can say is Tera is absolutely pathetic and Unlike Sharuko Ill give you legit reasons On why. 1) LAWL The combat system is a joke! There is nothing amazing about it. The cross hair BS is for people with controllers..That’s all…You can actually use a 360 or PS3 controller to play the game and do it well. I’m sorry but no true MMO runs off a controller.. 2)Also hate to call BS Gamebreaker but the Game graphics are Sh*t! I’m running two 6970′s maxed out WoW looks better then this honestly it does!…3)The Classes have only linear gaming mechanics! I.E You don’t spec anything you just level and get abilities as you go.4) The crafting is complete crap! This IS A ASIAN PC/CONSOLE game that hasn’t launched to console!       I disagree that tera looks bad. It by far the most graphically superior MMO on the market. It is very detailed and very pretty. Personally I think that GW2 looks better, but that is a subjective opinion about art and design.
      
      Other than that all his points are spot on, and he and I can’t do much more than continue to LAWL at you. You’re free to like Tera personally, but don’t try to talk shit about GW2 when you dont have ANY basis for a single word of what you’re saying.

    If you don’t want to read that wall of text, please do not comment on it. By not reading the entire piece you might not get the right idea about what a person is trying to convey. I might watch one episode in the middle of a television series and not comprehend larger story arcs or understand how character development over the course of that season impacts that specific episode. It’s just not fair to judge a piece of information like that, at least not without admitting that we are uninformed about much of it.
    
    As you’ve seen when I write a lot, I do make sure to include paragraph breaks. It would be much easier to read LLanowar Elf’s response to Kicknpups because they included some breaks for pacing and compartmentalization of ideas.
    
    I just cannot fathom why some of you would respond to something with either praise or criticism without absorbing the entire content of the message, even if it is “incoherent fanboy gibberish”.
    
    This applies to anything, really. I don’t care what kind of topic is being discussed. It’s like playing a game of telephone. The message gets distorted over all these responses because no one had the decency to read the original comment from start to finish.

  I’m amazed this comment actually got likes from people. I can only assume that fanboys of other games read this comment and just took everything as truth rather than experience the game themselves. Really, it’s ok to like more than one game, or play another game while looking forward to the one you really want the most. There’s no need to be willfully dishonest about games to try and make them look bad and scare people away so more people will flock to “your” game. It’s foolish, petty, childish, and most of all means you’re getting played. You’re essentially performing marketing for a game you have no ownership of and are not getting paid for. Marketing execs have got to love this phenomenon, but the people that carry it out are just pawns.
  
  As for the actual content of this post… it’s rubbish. None of it makes any sense. I could go on for pages pointing out the inaccuracies but that would be a waste of time. Anyone who watches a video of the game (which conveniently is right above the comments) will know that the claim that it looks “worse than WoW” is just objectively wrong. He spends half of the post taking about how the graphics are bad when even people that don’t like the game have to admit that the visuals and animations are stellar, even if they don’t like the art style.
  
  His claim that he’s gone “from 1-41 in less than 14 hours” is all you need to know about this poster. He hasn’t actually played the game, he’s just trolling. What he’s claiming isn’t even close to possible, and anyone who has actually played the game would know that. Do yourselves a favor people, play the game (preferably to level 20) yourself and make your own opinion instead of blindly swallowing the first negative opinion of the game you see. If you don’t WANT to like it, no one is forcing you to, but don’t be an idiot like the above poster who was so invested in another games success he willfully lied about playing the game and the contents of the game itself.

      I thought you were level 44? What happened, you got de-leveled three times in the past ten minutes in a game that doesn’t have de-leveling? The easy way to prove your statement is to simply take a screenshot of your character with the /played time and upload it for all to see.
      
      Seriously though, think about what you’re saying: you think Tera is one of the worst MMOs ever, clearly inferior to other games, boring, a horrible grind, buggy, etc. etc. and yet you’ve played it to level 41?   And you know this how? As someone who has played the game extensively, a majority of the footage was in-game with a detached camera and some were cutscenes (which also use the in-game engine). All the impressive action you saw was using in-game combat mechanics. TERA doesn’t have “action” in its cutscenes, it doesn’t need to. Most often the cut-scenes in-game are used to show dialogue. All the stuff like players flying through the air, narrowly dodging the swipe of a giant’s fists and then smacking it down… that’s not a cutscene. That’s the kind of stuff that happens in TERA’s combat all the time (and yes, it really does look that impressive in game).
  
  Everything from 1:23 to 1:50 is in-game footage of actual combat. All those mobs, attacks, effects, and areas are in the game and look exactly like that (though w/o the cinematic camera angles). The possible exception is the part where the tower explodes, that could be a cutscene since I haven’t seen that yet in game. Then again, it easily could be in-game content I haven’t seen yet (maybe BG’s?).

    I know this because with less then 24 hours of gameplay Im level 44 atm and running this game maxed..The graphics are maxed. Ill prob quit at 50 and Im playing to show how easy and boring the game is..It has been a wow clone from the start a wow BC clone.

      And this is how I know you’re lying. It’s not just far-fetched to get to 41 in 11 hours of gameplay (or 44 in less than 24) it’s straight-up impossible unless you found some exploit. Of course, from the rest of your comments I know that’s not the case, they contain so many other inaccuracies that it’s obvious you haven’t played the game. How sad is it that you are so devoted to another game, you end up pretending to have played this one to try and lend more credibility to your lies.

      Actually, it is JUST THAT EASY to level in TERA (I’m a casual player and I got to level 30 in less than 3 days of playing) they’ve dumbed down this game so much, it’s pitifully easy.

The graphics are not horrible but I can see why you may dislike the art style which is probably what you are trying to talk about. And FFX was one of my favorite games but is in no way like Tera lol. I assume you were only talking about the art style because that is all these games have in common. Art style is just based on personal taste so your opinion on ‘graphics’ is pointless.

  Tera is far from what you would call a WoW carbon copy, perhaps less so than GW2, which is not G2. The graphics in Tera are one of the best in MMOs currently and secondly, GW2 graphics are far less from what we can go off of currently.
  
  Secondly most draw Tera has too anybody really is the combat system and boss fights with it, not the whole asian scene which plenty of other games and MMOs have. I wish a freaking MMO company in the U.S. would finally wake up and make an action combat MMORPG, instead of ui+target based combat WoW copies leaving us only to crappy Korean imports.
  
  Lastly GW2 isn’t free to play, you have to drop down the box price upfront and have no sub, it’s a simple buy to play. Tera isn’t that great, but it has a major combat system appeal going for it and hopefully end game is decent unlike the trashy starting area of it.

Well it was a really well done trailer, it made me want to instantly log in lol. And what MikeB said, the majority of it was down using in game cinematic and and fancy camera angles of gameplay but you can’t play with those fancy camera angles so I can’t really say that’s what the game looks like.

These kinds of things may be a little treat for fans of the game but I’m sure the primary purpose is to get people who haven’t been following it to get interested. Games need to advertise once they launch if they want to succeed and can’t just rely on word of mouth which is developed during headstart and beta events.

Sharuko has gone way, way overboard in his white knighting of Tera (and by extension, criticism of GW2) but it’s pretty understandable how easy it is to go overboard with it if you’re a Tera fan. There’s so much misinformation, straw-men arguments, and pointless hostility on the internet right now towards Tera from GW2 fans that it really gets on your nerves. I think pitting MMOs against one another is stupid and belongs to marketers getting paid for it, not players doing it for free out of some misplaced devotion to a company that only cares about their money. That said, I do feel compelled to correct all the straight-faced lies, misinformation, and negative spin going around in regards to Tera. Almost all of it is from GW2 fanboys, of which there are hundreds of thousands, so the lies and exaggerations get repeated to each other again and again to the point that most of the stuff is completely ridiculous. It’s like that game “telephone” you played when you were a kid.

Since these massive legions of GW2 fans keep pouncing on anything Tera related (often mentioning how GW2 will be “their precious, the one to rule them all” in a fit of gollum-like frenzy) it’s only natural that some reactionary Tera fans will start to do the same thing in GW2 videos. It’s a shitfest, and while the shit is being thrown from both sides, don’t kid yourself: the GW2 fanboys outnumber the Tera fanboys 50:1.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with having a minority view. I’m actually proud of the fact that by way of thinking for myself and forming my own opinions on things, I often end up in the “minority.” I assure you, it has nothing to do with any kind of inferiority complex. There is nothing superior about blindly following the herd as though that somehow makes something the right decision.

That said, don’t think I’m somehow implying (in some passive-aggressive manner that Jason Winter likes to use towards Tera) that GW2 is bad because lots of people like it. I think the game looks really solid and does a lot of things right. It has some unique features that make it a guaranteed purchase for me, but that doesn’t mean I don’t also think Tera is solid, does a lot of things right, and has some unique features that make it a guaranteed purchase for me. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not an all-or-nothing thing with games. I assure you, there are more choices than “best game EVAR!” and “LAWL, game is trash.” Unfortunately, I feel this post will fall on deaf ears.

That first trailer is so badass and I think launch trailers can definitely sell games, I know it’s helped me decide on buying a few I have been on the fence about, regardless of if they ended up being good or not.

I have to say, for all the hate it’s gotten, I’ve been pleasantly surprised with Tera and enjoying my experience with it. I even had assumed it was bad before I tried it, just watching videos of people playing it and hearing all the negativity towards it.

Tera has its good points and they also got some bad points same go’s for GW2
they are 2 diffrent games i hope you agree with me so far.

i was actualy really glad that atleast someone enoyed the game.

What you dident know is that “i” was following Tera 2 years ago even before i had intrest in GW2
but it lost me along the way, Tera sounds very intresting but it wasent the game i was looking for eventualy, i did gave it a try though during the CB5.
During the beta i was amazed with the graphics best graphics i have seen for an mmo so far
i loved the thrill of the open world pvp, one moment your friends next moment your dead.
the “action” combat was good at first and while i was unlocking more and more skills
i started too dislike te game cuz “I” felt the game was repeating quests just with other npc’s
So i dident feel that i should buy a game thats boring and lacks content & rooted your character animation “in my opinion” am not that kind of person that could/ want or buy’s stuff too hate on it.

Now, this little wall of text is my opinion about Tera (short version)
and only my opinion. I dont hate Tera so dont call me a hypocrite i dident attack you
