SOE Shuts Down Its MMOs Monday

It’s not exactly the end of the world — that’s later this year, according to the Mayans — but for fans of Sony Online Entertainment‘s games, Monday might as well be the apocalypse.

SOE will be taking its games offline from 12:01 a.m. Monday, April 23 until about 11:59 p.m. the same night. Players will be unable to log in to any SOE games, access their accounts, or perform any kind of commercial transactions during this time.

There’s no official word as to the reason for this shutdown beyond “maintenance,” and the games should be back and ready to go on Tuesday, so it’s probably not strictly apocalyptic.

But gamers being denied their MMOs for 24 hours?

We expect plenty of rending of garments, crying in the streets, and petulant wails of “John Smedley, John Smedley, why have you forsaken me?”

I actually was thinking about DCUO again soon. Guess It won’t be on Monday. To many Beta’s to start this weekend. Looks like Tuesday now. Le sigh.  :p

The Maya (Mayan is the name of the language, not the people) didn’t think December 21, 2012 was the end of the world. It’s the end of the 13th Bak’tun, their largest cycle of time.  What does this have to do with SOE? Dunno.

The Mayans also didn’t take leap year into account (didn’t exist in their calendar) so that time has come and gone already

Stuff happens. It’s not something that I’d hold against them. Sometimes to make the service better they have to shut it down for a while. I don’t play SOE games enough to be really effected by this. I drop into DCUO once in a while… /shrug

They are probably upgrading and moving everything over to bigger, better, and more secure servers. I see this as a good thing.
