Blizzard unlikely to offer flying in Pandaria at level 85
33 Comments

A recent forum thread made a very reasonable suggestion regarding flying in Mists of Pandaria. Back in Wrath of the Lich King, an item existed called the Tome of Cold Weather Flying. Once a player had one character to 80, they could purchase said tome, and mail it to any of their alts whose level was high enough – 68 was the level required – and that alt could use it to learn Cold Weather Flying. 68 was two levels lower than players without a level 80 character had to be to learn Cold Weather Flying. Rather like Pandaria is the new continent for the latest expansion, Northrend was the same for Wrath of the Lich King, and Cold Weather Flying was what was required to fly there. Apparently the temperate climate in Outland hadn’t prepared players skill sufficiently for the icy hills of Northrend.

A player on the forums suggested that the same might be provided for Mists, so that once a player hit 90 they could purchase what he referred to as a Tome of Pandaria Flying, which would allow their alts to fly in Pandaria from an earlier level, perhaps 85, perhaps 88. Blizzard Community Manager Crithto’s response was as follows:

“We’re not sure if we’ll be doing this. The tome worked out well enough for Wrath of the Lich King as an experiment, but so much of the experience we spent a lot of time and effort shaping in Pandaria is negated by flying. In addition to the upcoming reputation changes for alts (when a character on the account hits Revered), we’ll consider other methods of potentially speeding up the leveling process for alts, but we don’t think “allow flying” is necessarily the best answer.”

Throwing it out there to the GAMEBREAKER audience, what are your thoughts? Should Blizzard introduce flying from level 85 in Pandaria? Has what you have seen of the world while leveling led you to believe that the world Blizzard has created is better viewed from the ground? Would 85 flying spoil Pandaria? Some players would simply settle for being able to retrieve their corpse with flight, which isn’t currently an option.

And furthermore, what could Blizzard be looking at to speed the leveling process for alts? A buff to experience gains like they plan to provide for reputation seems likely, or some other method. Do our readers think it’s needed? Is the process of reaching 90 too slow, and is flying the way to speed it up? Or does flying while questing make it all too easy?

I’m for the early flying like in wrath. But since they don’t want to do that I think they need to have some BOA gear that can boost the XP by like 20% or 30% gained for alts. Or make the current BOA gear go to lvl 90.

Which I think would be easier and probably better received by the player base. Then a decrease in XP needed per lvl.

I think the speed of lvling is pretty good the first time around. I just don’t feel like it again at the same pace on my alts.

indeed BOA’s to 90 would be awesome, also BOA”S which changed to suite class and spec would be awesome to

I just lvled my second alt – needed to finish 2 zones with rested EXP.  WHy on earth should I want to play an alt and just do 1 zone?

      • http://twitter.com/rigo8582 Rigo Contreras

How would someone else using BOAs to lvl faster change your experience? BOAs can atleast give the player a choice.

          I agree with you Rigo

While I would LOVE to be able to fly in Pandaria before level 90, I know Blizzard will not do anything about it.  It was an idiotic move to not allow at least a tome to fly.  I done leveled a couple toons to 90 already, I done seen the freaking content.  I DON’T need to see it from the ground again.

    • http://twitter.com/Luke_Malcolm Luke Malcolm

…. wrong post i replied too

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tj-Vossos/647768691 Tj Vossos

BC and WOTLK did not allow you to fly till max level, Cata was different because you were still in Azeroth and it was a gimmick, flying in Pandas would make lvling slightly faster yes but in my opinion should not be given it would kill half the quests, and they could just give alts the same buff monks get the extra 50% exp buff, but make it perma, they could even make it 500% for sh&ts and Giggles

    • http://twitter.com/Luke_Malcolm Luke Malcolm

TJ your right, I like being able to travel around without flying until 90, Sometimes I don’t even use the flying and im 90.

  • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

No need.  LK was 10 levels so the early flying for alts was nice.  With Mists once you level your first toon, you understand the flow of the content, so leveling alts is not a problem.  Flying corpse runs would be a nice option.

No… now I am not a huge fan of wow… I quit nearly a year ago.. I came back about 2 weeks ago, and just hit 87.  At first, i wanted to fly right away, but i am totally enjoying the scenery and “discovering” what’s over the next hill.  That said I doubt I’ll be subbed still come the new year, but that’s my opinion on said subject.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

I’m sure there is alot of players that simply want to level a few alts to 90 and unsub.  Will be interesting to see if the story and gameplay around 5.1 will be enough to keep players sub who want to see how the story end up.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

    remove flying mounts!

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Whoa, lets not get out of hand here.  I just unlocked my Red Cloud Flying Disc.

  • http://twitter.com/Deadalon Deadalon

There is no need to add flying into mist this early.  The best way to reward ppl leveling alts is to remove the forced rep grind for gear progression.   They will do it within 3 months for all players anyway when no1 will buy MOP cause first month you are unable to raid even in LFR without grinding rep.

    • http://twitter.com/Luke_Malcolm Luke Malcolm

what forced rep grind? oh do you mean the optional valor gear that you can get if you choose to do the dailies on the side of grinding Heriocs, You can get into LFR easy through Heriocs in a day or 2 if the Loot God is on your side, if not a 2-4 days tops.

Average player will prbly take there time, but people who wanna get into LFR quick can get in if they put the effort in.

      • http://twitter.com/Deadalon Deadalon

Valor is not an optional thing m8.  You get it for doing.. daylies… for doing LFG.. and for doing LFR…  Now… DAYLIES are optional thing… UNTIL you realise you cant use your valor points witout doing em.

Now…. Lets see.  Are PVP ppl doing daylies to get rep to be able to use Conquest points ?

If you cant see the difference than I can’t help you.  Most ppl will tho.  They realise how moronic the current system is.  Specially when ppl will start lvling alts and even with the promised rep fix – are forced to do same daily quests over and over and over and over and over.

Yes – its THAT forced rep grind….

    • Zenotetsuken

My problem with the system isn’t the rep grind itself, it is that you are forced to do dailies IF you want the rep.  MMOs are built on grinds, that is the simple truth of it.
If they were to broaden the way rep could be obtained it would appease the majority of the people complaining about it.
Keep the dailies for people that like dailies, add a tabard for people that don’t.  There is already a daily cap on how much rep you can get through dailies, so just have a daily cap on how much you can get with a tabard.  If they did it that way they could even let strictly PvPers grind rep while they are doing what they enjoy.

      • http://twitter.com/Deadalon Deadalon

Ye – Im ofc talking about the daylies when I say forced rep grind.  Cause there is no other options.

  • http://twitter.com/JayShaddix Jay Shaddix

I don’t think flying is needed in Mists this early, or even before 90 at all.  There’s not that much content between 85-90, especially for someone who is serious about levelling their characters.  I think players should just run along and enjoy the scenery.  It’s pretty good after all! :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.ericson.39 Jonathan Ericson

Not that much content…..Not only did you skip a LOT of content. You didn’t even notice you did.

  • Zenotetsuken

This part to me makes no sense “but so much of the experience we spent a lot of time and effort shaping in Pandaria is negated by flying”  People that are leveling alts generally don’t care about experiencing it again, they are just pushing to max level.
Telling people that they need to have the exact same experience that they have already had because you think you know better what people want than they do is kind of condescending.

I really don’t think we NEED to have flying mounts earlier than 90, but I think that if they are going to take that stand their best option would be to remove some mobs on main pathways, and drastically increase quest item drops.
Up until MoP there were almost always either flying mounts, or paths/roads that you could take to get to your destination with little resistance.  Now the only way to get from point A to point B quickly is take the longest route possible to avoid the swarms of enemies that have no point other than to clog the path that you need to take, and slow you down.

  • http://twitter.com/ChaosCorpse Enderle

They shouldnt have introduced flying in the first place.
    But a better traveling system.

  • Tim Whitehead

While I do like the flying mounts I have especially the dragons I am coming around to thinking flying mounts was not such a great idea (2 expansions to late I know) I think Blizzard should have added the extra flight points they did in Cataclysm ages ago to help speed up movement around the world. Also I would have added the ability to “Fast Travel” in a pay extra to fly more direct or maybe some kind of ground mount horse and cart for variety.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kris-Yeisley/554290488 Kris Yeisley

Stupidest thing ever not allowing at least alts to learn flying earlier. They added Tome of Cold Weather Flying and allowed flying at 60 in Outlands in patch 3.2.0. They then removed the Tome of Cold Weather Flying and changed Cold Weather Flying to require level 68 in Patch 4.0.1. They also added the Flight Master’s License in patch 4.0.3 to allow all characters level 60 and higher to fly in Azeroth and thereby do Cataclysm content when they reached level 80. It’s time they either re-evaluated the speed of Epic Ground Mounts, which are way too slow or showed some kind of consistency in how and when they were going to allow flight to players.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kris-Yeisley/554290488 Kris Yeisley

Blizzard either needs to re-evaluate ground mount speed by making Apprentice Riding +100% ground speed and  Journeyman Riding +200% or they seriously need to get some consistency about when they’re offering flying to players. By the same arguement they’re using to defend no Pandaria flight until 90, the same arguement could be made to disallow flying in Outlands until 70, flying in Northrend until 80, and flying in Azeroth until 85.

I was continually frustrated during my 85 to 90 questing experience by not being able to fly. Every time I mounted up, I hopped, always believing my Headless Horseman’s mount would take off. Not the case. While this was annoying, and leveling seemed to take forever, I was able to better appreciate the surrounding areas. Directions mattered. Places around the map mattered. I don’t think flying before 90 is the answer to the leveling grind. I think the leveling is the real problem, not the transportation. Once you get past the awfulness of not flying, you remember that you hate leveling, not your flightlessness. For me, I would rather just not level my alts. Thank the Sha my main is 90.

I would be for an item like the tome of cold weather flying, however instead of directly teaching flying it opens a questline.  The questline would start in Jade Forest and continue through the zones till you reach Shrine of Two Moons/Shrine of Seven Stars.

  • http://twitter.com/IcedCafeMocha Victoria Keeble

I have reached level 90… i’ve seen what has to be seen and know which routes to take regarding leveling/ questing, i don’t need to do it all again by ground mount… some people have 10+ chars… no thanks i’ve got 2 90s both ground leveled (obviously) and i found it frustrating having to walk AROUND the huge cliffs that aren’t very clear on the mini map to find npc/quest item/whatever. I did it twice, i highly doubt i missed anything the first time i leveled and don’t get me wrong it was amazing but i really don’t need to do it multiple times. I agree you need to be 90 to indeed purchase whatever tome of pandaland would be though, because yes it is indeed a lovely experience (repeatedly… no, just hell no).

It could also be yet another gold sink, wotlk tome was 1k to start with
then bumped down if iirc it’s not exactly game breaking being able to
    fly …anywhere.

Blizz are trying to make leveling alts faster, this would be an excellent boost to that. Why not? there’s no real valid reason not to other than mild annoyance to players.

Anyone joining WoW now is going to miss content regardless too, WoW has boosted the speed phenomenally the dungeon finder for Outland i didn’t even see Mag T or botanica ect… i went to Northrend, I haven’t raided BT at level in the EU realms or Sunwell… it’s assumed you go back at max level to plow thru it all if you really wish to see whatever content you missed.

ps: Silvermoon why you no fly here QQ (i can fly in outland… why not here too at 60+)

I’d say for them to add a tome for pandaria flying but you need to have a 90 already and your alt need to be at least 87. The reason why I say 87 it’s because Kun-Lai Summit is just so damn annoying on the ground,

  • http://twitter.com/NerdnGeekInc Raven Frosth

WoW Players are buncha really lazy People, Flying in general what killed the Game, because too many ppl just flew their birdies and got there faster then those who didnt have the money for it or didnt care for the flying part.  That said,  It’s nice to walk for once that way people dont steal mobs or hop from area to area, keeps people on plain field and more honest this way.  They should take out Flying all together.  GW2 is big and they dont have flying mounts same goes for Rift.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=546472450 Kira Milne

I play GW2 in SPITE of not having flying mounts, not because it doesn’t.

  • http://twitter.com/thavleifrim nathan law

The wrath tomes would be a great idea, even if they tied them to a rep or something aswell as level 90.
