Blizzard's Titan: Separating Rumors from Facts!

With so many rumors about Titan, what do we know and what can we conclude?

Blizzard’s Titan, has been the subject of a lot of speculation lately. Is it an MMORPG? Is it an MMOFPS? Is it something completely new? GAMEBREAKER posted recently about the new rumors from poster alphaNoid, where a website dedicated to Titan info had done their fair share of detective work on the usefulness and content of his posts.

AlphaNoid had asserted, amongst other things, that Titan was not a brand new IP, but a mish-mash of other titles, which led Josh Allen to conclude in Legendary Episode 109 that Titan was the long-abandoned Starcraft Ghost. Josh has since been informed by his own Blizzard insider that, in fact, Titan is a brand new IP, and this is backed up by a post from Blizzard Senior World of Warcraft Community Rep Jonathan “Zarhym” Brown, way back in 2009. As the forums have since been redesigned, it’s necessary to view that post from a third-party site, but it says the following:

mmorpg chat bubble Blizzards Titan: Separating Rumors from Facts!
Games take years to develop from concept to release. Diablo III was in the works for years before being announced. StarCraft II was announced two years ago and isn’t even in Beta yet.

We have nothing to advertise for the new MMO because it’s a shell of a game thus far. We’ve already stated it’ll be a brand new franchise, which means the lore, art, and game play are being developed entirely from scratch. It’s an overwhelming process, but a process through which we excel. Our track record supports this.

What else do we know?

Back in 2007, Blizzard advertised for “an individual to lead an engine-programming team focused on next-generation massively multiplayer online games. The ideal candidate will possess outstanding communication and coordination skills and be capable of…[helping in the] design and creation of a next-generation engine.”Later that year, at the Burning Crusade launch, Itzik Ben Bassat said: “When we announce our next MMORPG it’s not going to be another WOW–we’re not a company that tends to tread the same ground,” he told British film magazine Empire. “It’ll be something innovative and new that really brings entertainment to another level.”

This was followed in 2009 by an announcement from Bobby Kotick, in which he is quoted as saying ”What we’ve announced at Blizzard is that we have Starcraft coming, Diablo has been in production…and a new, unannounced MMOG that has a little more broad appeal.” In 2010, this product slate was leaked, revealing Blizzard’s timeline going forward, and Senior VP Frank Pearce confirmed the project Titan name in a video interview a few months later. Shortly after the slate was leaked, the General Manager of Blizzard China was replaced, but this could well have been coincidental.

Rob Pardo commented in an interview that Titan was still underway, had been in core development for over four years, and that there was a team of over 100 people working on it, but gave away precious little detail on the game itself. There have been various rumors, not least the recent ones, that Titan would be an MMOFPS, but the recent Q1 investor call with Activision Blizzard included a slide which said that “work continues on the unannounced MMORPG”. This could have been a typo, but it ties in well with Bassat’s aforementioned quote.

Lastly, of course, there was the recent registration of the Project Blackstone domain, which could have been completely unrelated to Titan, or completely key! Other interesting rumors include a 2011 forum post that took this developer list, and looked into the online galleries of several of the art team, concluding that Titan would have a steampunk direction. There was also an AMA with an alleged former GM, where he said that it would appeal to fans of The Sims. A French site also published rumors that characters would have a dual life, with one social half and one combat-related half, but no source is stated.

From what Blizzard has said on Titan, there’s little firm information.

  • We are relatively sure it’s a new IP, rather than a rehash of an existing title.
  • We can gather that it’s something a little outside the existing genres covered by Starcraft, World of Warcraft and Diablo.
  • There may be a release in late 2014-early 2015.
  • It is likely an MMORPG, but, given the sources for this, other MMOG genres shouldn’t be wholly ruled out.
  • Over 100 people are working on it.
  • It’s currently codenamed Titan!

The following can be categorized as interesting rumors, not completely ruled out:

  • It’s an MMOFPS.
  • It’s futuristic or steampunk in design.
  • While a new IP, it draws heavily from existing titles.
  • It could be cross-platform
  • It may have a social or player housing component

What do you think? Is there truth in the rumors? Will Project Titan be an MMORPG or an MMOFPS or something else entirely? What will the style be?

Could they be going as far as trying some Sandbox.  I would really love to see another successful Sandbox MMO since there has only been a few to survive the years.  And maybe early on the plan wasn’t for the game to be tied to any franchise, but as game developed more Blizzard thought (you know this could actually work well with this IP). We have seen it happen with the other games is the past by other companies.

WoW set in 2144, sandbox, + mechs DONE

  • http://twitter.com/Vermikz Verm

It WILL be an MMORPG and will most likely have a story design that is more fantasy world based than futuristic. The reason why I say this is if they do intend to make Titan the “WoW killer” they need to be sure that they don’t allihinate all the fans of WoW and the various game aspects that the player base has come to love.

Zarhym uses the “”franchise” he never speaks about a “IP” when you look up the words for meaning a franchise is part of a IP not a IP it self so there can be a new franchise in a old IP .?

[Puts on Tin Foil Hat] The way I look at Titan is from previous blurbs and I don’t remember specifically who said them all. I think it was Pardo who said that the only competition for Titan he could think of was SWTOR. This leads me to believe we are moving away from a High Fantasy setting like WoW and a Low Fantasy setting like Diablo since it’s also supposed to be different from WoW. Then you have Kaplan a bit back talking about it having guns (sorta). He was being a flake as always. This lends a bit to the theory of it being a MMOFPS. Then we have the “Sim” element of Casual investment and Hardcore investment that several Blizzard people have spoke of. I start to picture something closer to a hybrid of Planetside 2 and Wildstar now. You have a easier focus of gameplay, drop in and play capability, rewards for consistent play and skill, personal housing that is interactive for PvE and PvP, and so on.

Next I submit the picture hint from Jordan showing RnR Racing, Superman, Blackthorne, WC2, and Lost Vikings. WC = no, LK, = no… Now we have Superman, Blackthorne, and RnR Racing. DCUO means no Superman and RnR Racing is definitely a no go considering past racing MMO history. Motor City Online was the only one that ever broke even. This leaves us with Blackthorne. Now Blackthorne shows promise, scarily enough. It takes place across multiple gaming genres, different planets, open space, and with a bit more stretching it even starts to mesh into the Kaplan interview where he talked about time travel, multi-platforming, and different settings that haven’t been done right by an MMORPG yet. This fits in with most of the hints (which could be a red herring albeit) and for those who played Blackthorne you are already waving the “No time travel flag in Blackthorne game”. However, think back a little bit to the fake Blackthorne 2 ad where it did involve time traveling and even Facebook/Twitter integration. There was even a Black Stone in Blackthorne…

Pandarens started out as a joke and now we have MoP. Don’t count Blackthorne out of the running even if I’d rather have World of Ghostcraft. Personally, I’d rather see Blizzard license Cyberpunk, Shadowrun, or TORG and give it the AAA treatment, but they aren’t that adventurous.

I’m inclined to believe the rumour that it will appeal to Sims fans. Sims is still a massively popular franchise, so giving players a “Sims-like” half of the game to experience, and pull from that demographic is very smart from a financial stand-point

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

Well, I’m starting to think that it could be similar to SWG.  That game was pretty close to the Sims.  That would pretty much end my search for a new home as GW2 is growing stale with the lack of content for PvE and horrid dungeons.

has anyone else had the thought that it could be a new star wars mmo because didnt gamebreaker say a while ago that lucasarts was wanting to make another mmo in 2015 so its around about the same time … anyone else had this thought ??

Swtor may bor terribad but i doubt it was being replaced before it was released.

  • flamingbug

Wasn’t there talk before that Blizzard working with Bungee? It could be a Bungee IP that they are exploring, though I don’t recall where I saw this relation, probably Legendary…

       Bungie*

    • http://www.facebook.com/FireravenHollowheart John Fireraven Barnett

I saw this as well. If I recall correctly Bungie tried to get out of a contract to make some kind of game, I think fps, for blizzard with new iterations every other year for six years.

CHALLENGE !!!! Name the books in Olivia’s book case.

    • http://www.facebook.com/FireravenHollowheart John Fireraven Barnett

I was actually just wondering that same bit. It’s almost a distracting thought for me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.hornsby.7 Jonathan Hornsby

I think at this point all we can be sure of is that Titan will be the first new MMO in nearly a decade that WoW fans won’t instantly attack.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

I dont think so, WoW fans will tear it up as well if it has a crappy end game.

      • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.hornsby.7 Jonathan Hornsby

That’s after the fact, I’m talking about the first response. Currently WoW fans blindly attack every other MMO as soon as it is announced, before they know ANYTHING about its strengths and weaknesses.

        • David Knapp

Mainly because as soon as a new MMO is announced you get the haters going off on WoW right away before you know anything about said game.  Sadly both sides do that crap.

          • http://twitter.com/Luke_Malcolm Luke Malcolm

Yes & when that said game doesn’t succeed to the expectations those haters had set they will either ditch the game or drive the game into the ground & just wait for the next new game to come out

          • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

I did like the observation from one of the hosts of The Republic.  The hardcore MMO player will only play a MMO for a few months, before they are off to the next MMO.  Leaving the casual MMO players who will play the game for years.

        • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Typically it’s the WoW haters that poke WoW with a stick every time a new MMO is released.

It will be funny to see how Blizzard eventually markets this game. Or if you will end up with the WoW fans vs. the Titan fans. With the WoW fans taking the role of the “only child”, eventually resenting all the attention the new game is getting.

Don’t see Blizzard using the Trion World marketing campaign  “You are no longer in Azaroth.”

Or GW2 fans asserting the trinity is dead or the entire game is end game.

          • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.hornsby.7 Jonathan Hornsby

Do you know how many GW2 fans called it a WoW killer? None. Maybe it used to be like what you’re saying, but these days the WoW-trolls strike first. Maybe they think it is a preemptive strike, but still, WoW fans raid every new game’s forums and videos day one.

Also; saying you like a new game because of X is not bashing the old game that still does Y. WoW players take every iteration or evolution of the genre as a personal attack. It’s sad really.

          • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Did a google search for WoW killers.  They are now organized per-year, 2008, 2008, 2010….

Lol, one of the first articles to appear was a GamebreakerTV article listing 8 sure-fire WoW killers and it listed Guild Wars 2 B2P as a sure-fire WoW killer.

Personally, when I chat with someone about a new MMO, the first person to mention WoW will be the fan of the new MMO.  I have no problem discussing the merits of a new MMO on the information presented.

MMORPG PC only!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it will draw from other Blizz games because they make the best games in the world rivaled only from the great god of gaming Nintendo. If your successful wh not draw from what works? and as for XBOX microsoft will just squeeze $$ out of Blizz and we don’t want that. Cheers to the next 14 million sub MMO brom BLizz

Lets keep the rumor mill turning shall we.
What we know is bugger all as it’s mostly speculation.
When Blizz officially make an announcement THEN it’ll be worth discussing.

  • http://twitter.com/olov244 Jason D Williams

titan will come out when wow dies, which is never.

but it sounds like they’re trying to steal ideas from other games…….just like they did with wow. i’m guessing skyrim style mmo, better housing/crafting system, and a different world. i wonder how they’re gonna get wow players to play both, discount with two subscriptions?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=692658935 Joel Lindqvist

Trying to steal?? When it comes to entertainment, nothing is completley new there is always a game/movie/tv-serie/book that is similar. If they could not borrow ideas from other works there would never be any new game releases. If a game comes out and looks pretty much like some other game but does it better and is more entertaining. why would we not like that?

      • Jim Walker

I believe WOW was a serious Everquest clone. EQ started this whole thing and although some have perfected the fantasy MMORPG, not until very recently has anyone added anything significant to the genre.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1044962693 Ryan Snow Johnson

My best guess is that Titan is based on a vaporware IP from Blizzard named Nomad. Nomad was both a Sci-fi (Starcraft) /
fantasy (Warcraft and Diablo) mix of the top three IPs from Blizzard. It would be a lovely blend for sci-fi/fantasy fans.

@ Jason D Williams You are correct WoW wont die, but it has been evolving and being simplified over the years to suit a younger audience which will continue to play it. Blizzard then will release Titan for an older audience which, for years, have been waiting for a challenging MMO to hit the market.

i think project blackstone is a placeholder for the d3 expansion. just my guess

  • DoctorOverlord

I’ve always thought it would be interesting to mix the Sims with an MMORPG to do a superhero genre game.

When you play your character in their superhero guise, the game is a MMORPG.  You roam around your own personal instanced city (like a version of Gotham or Metropolis).  When you’re not in costume you play a game more like the Sims, a life simulator filled with with personal problems and storylines.

Your actions as a hero could effect the Sims-style storyline by changes on the city setting (allowing crime to run rampant could result in NPCs you know getting mugged, not saving a hospital would be bad if some gets sick etc).  I’m not sure if there would be a way for the SIM-side to effect the MMORPG.

Anyway that’s what I thought when I read the part about Titan appealing to people who like the Sims.   They can’t just be planning a version of Sims Online with better graphics afterall.

It was wondering if steampunk might be their next move. Interesting idea. However, based on it’s name, I pondered what it would be like if the MMO was in a Greek-based setting, dealing the the conflict surrounding the Titans. Now, there has been some exploration of steampunk in Greco-romanesque settings, but… Something tells me that if Blizzard did this, it would just pop. Especially if it has an all new engine, graphics, etc.

It’s destiny IMO. I can’t think where I read or heard some of the info that My opinion is based on but I think It was a vid from ign talking about the release of destiny and it was first stated it was going to be on for Xbox 720, and in past discussions about Titan lore I can’t remember the context but halo was brought up as involvement with Titan maybe. Also actavison/blizzard is involved in destiny. Just some thoughts tring to put past dots together. I could be way off.

    • http://twitter.com/JuhTai James Megretton

A kitten dies everytime someone says it’s Destiny. >.< IT IS NOT DESTINY. The only reason Activision is involved is as the publisher. Destiny has been long in the works before Bungie joined up with Activision in 2010.

Titan is something brand spanking new from Blizzard and Blizzard only :)

  • Patrick Cook

Its called Destiny not Titan and its coming either in late 2013 or anytime during 2014

    • Guest

      Wrong game.

it was “Code-Named” Titan (which is like a place-holder name) reguardless of weather it is Destiny or not.
