Bungie's Destiny coming to PC?

Bungie says they would like to put Destiny on PC

Bungie has announced the details of its newest game, Destiny. This new constantly online Sci-fi FPS will be a shared world shooter and incorporate some MMO elements. As more information pours in more questions are raised and we have a full write up on the game here. But, there is still one big question: Will we see a Bungie Destiny PC release? So far we haven’t gotten any straight answers from the developers but we do have some clues that it will be on PC.

“We need to make sure that we’re prepared for the future. Both prepared for upcoming generations, certainly upcoming other platforms. Multiple platforms,” said Bungie COO Pete Parsons during the big reveal yesterday. He continued, “We’re focused on is creating that living universe, that place that you want to be on, and not have it be dependent on any specific platform or device.”

Ok, well if they don’t want it to be dependant on any single platform then it makes sense to cast a wide net and be on every platform possible, right? There is no reason to limit the game to a smaller audience, especially since no one knows yet how the Microsoft’s next gen console will do. Especially since details are still fuzzy about how online play will operate.

“I’d say we would absolutely love to be on PC,” Parsons said. “If you go upstairs and talk to the people upstairs, we play on all platforms. This is a pretty round about way for Parsons to say that Bungie already has some sort of client up and running for PC. The question is whether or not Bungie will follow through with a consumer PC client and when.

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg added this. “Until anything’s officially announced, from the first parties, obviously we can’t comment on any platforms that might be forthcoming. But what we can say is that we’re building Destiny to be wherever gamers are. And we want this to be one of the great video game franchises and entertainment franchise for the next decade.”

Again, I’d say that a PC release is guaranteed at some point, but they just don’t want to make an official announcement just yet in case something goes wrong. If PC is not available on initial launch, I’d bet money that it will come down the pipeline at some point. We all know how fast hardware changes and if Destiny is to be a game that unfolds over the course of a whole decade, I’d say PC is the best bet. In one of the recent Destiny leaks, it is mentioned that the second Destiny release will be in 2015 and PC was mentioned for that release.

What do you think? Will Destiny be a PC title or will Bungie stick to console? Tell us in the comments below!

I’m sure it will be on PC but I’m genuinely curious as to why they didn’t just release on PC from the start.  When creating games, you’re developing on a PC and although PC might take an extra 3-4 months to make, I feel like it would have been far more effective to launch on all three platforms at the same time.  If the game is going to be cross platform, PC gamers will be going in much later and be behind on content (assuming this is an actual MMO).  That lag in content makes a pretty big difference to the more hardcore gamers and even to the casual crowd in some respects.

The PC platform would utilize the full potential of this game, the size, the art and gameplay. I genuinely hope they do it, because as it stands I have zero interest as a console game.

If we take a look at Bungie’s track record, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a PC release after the initial console release of Destiny. Halo and Halo 2 both made there way to PC, but much later after the game was released on Xbox. Halo 3 and later, on the other hand, have yet to make their PC reveal.

In my honest opinion, just go with the console release of Destiny. A PC version may be released, but will probably be later on. At that point, no one will want to start playing it on PC because the vast majority of those interested in the game will already be well established on the console versions. Sorry if you’re a die-hard, PC only gamer. You’ll probably get to enjoy it, just not as soon or with the same quantity of players.

The PC market > Consoles. Sure Bungie has their established player base on the consoles but how many of those FPS guys do you think will actually bother to pick up a game that isn’t Halo? On top of that its an MMO. I feel like they should release them on all three platforms. They themselves even said “This is a huge jump for us to devote the entire studio on so why rush it?” Yeah why rush it? Release on all three platforms so you have the maximum amount of players in your game as possible. I really don’t see the reasoning this isn’t possible.

Or how about we skip Destiny due to Bungie not seeming to understand markers and that PC gamers out number console by a huge sum.

    Im not WAITING for Destiny….

Thanks ill pass this and go to  TESO, Neverwinter, Wildstar…… yea….better MMOs

    • Revanhavoc

I’m not entirely sure what you are referring to with the comment “PC gamers out number console” but I have to point out that the majority of simultaneous major releases in the shooter genre (i.e. Black Ops 2) sell the most on XBOX 360 and PS3.

Black Ops 2 for example sold 55% on the XBOX 360 alone.

So in case you are wondering, the console market is the dominant platform for development in this generation. It’s all about the price and accesibility, because obviously we all know that the PC is the superior technical platform with graphics, keyboard and mouse, etc.

I love both PC and console, but don’t assume Bungie is making a mistake by focusing on the platform that brought us Halo. Their audience plays primarily XBOX 360, so it only makes sense to focus console development.

The Platform that Brought us Halo was actually the PC, fwiw.

        • Revanhavoc

          Sorry…what?!

          *shakes head*

Halo: Combat Evolved was an XBOX exclsuive…What are you talking about?

The Halo: Combat Evolved PC port wasn’t even done by Bungie. They are console developers.

I wouldn’t be surprised if their market research showed, if you want to create a new Sci-Fi MMO it needs to be free to play with a cash shop.  So, it makes sense to release this game to the consoles before a creating a PC port.

    • Revanhavoc

Yeah the specific mentions of “no sub fee” several times pretty much screamed micro-transactions in my head.

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Gambling for better gear was a serous warning sign.  But, I suspect if that gets labeled as pay to win, it will get dropped quickly.

anyone else think its strange that a class in the game is called the ” Titan ” class and its beng backed by activision. I meen everyone knew or heard they were working with blizz  on an mmofps so now the whole titan thing is even more curious.

  • Ravenstorm

If the game would be a coop game with hubs, as Dularr supposed, then I really hope Bungie will make Destiny pc compatible. If it has a great single player storyline, I would buy the game in a snap.

Since it wouldn’t be a true mmo it shouldn’t be ftp, and since btp in case of coop actually almost is the same as buy the game and enjoy the single player story and the coop hubs, I would have no problems buying it.

But wth is Destiny exactly? After seeing the ‘revelation’ I’m still unsure. Did I miss something? Cuz Bungie didn’t say the ‘MMO’ word nor the single player, and I’d love Dularr’s thought to be true.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

The other MMO buzzword that is missing is “factions.”

  • Revanhavoc

PC…It’s an after thought since Bungie’s bread and butter is now the console market.

I find it interesting how two great companies can develop for platforms in reverse – CD ProjektRed from PC to console, and Bungie in reverse. I think that’s great for both gaming platforms. It shows diversity!

  • Ethan Birkemo

From what I have seen and read about this game, it really seems tailor-made for PC.  I am sure they can pull off a nice platform experience, but PC just seems better.

  • Ethan Birkemo

I am sure Bungie can create a great platform experience for this game, but it just seems that this game is tailor-made for PC.

  • RazrVII

Still interested but I’m of the same opinion as most that leaving this game off of the PC would just be plain odd. The only reason I don’t see why they wouldn’t is that they are scared that the game is too generic for the PC where FPS shooters on grand scale are rather commonplace these days. I really hope this isn’t the reasoning as it’s 1. BS pussy ass reason and 2. Absolutely stupid to alienate a HUGE playerbase simply out of “fear”. Only time will tell, but there are a lot of intriguing bits of info that just makes the idea of a console only release seem horribly flawed. Not coming until 2014 but still on current gen? Multiple games aka expansions spread across the different platforms; alienating playerbase? Sociability with lack of keyboard and chat system? I could go on and on honestly. Don’t get me wrong I’m excited yet hesitant as hell. We shall see lol

“I’d say we would absolutely love to be on PC,” Parsons said. “If you go

I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion.  He didn’t specify what they actually play on PC “upstairs”.  It’s not uncommon for devs to play other games on their downtime while at work.

Without a PC version the are doomed. Sorry to break the news this early

    • http://twitter.com/JuhTai James Megretton

Halo 3 and 4 didn’t have PC versions. With Halo 3 claiming one of the most successful launches in history. So I ask, how has this multi billion dollar franchise survived if they have had no PC versions?

      • Monstercloud

        1. Halo 3 got it’s success from Halo 2 and CE (Both which had PC versions), as well as being the newest Halo in ~3 years, as well as being on a new console, which also had a recent price cut.

        2. Would 4 had the same success if it wasn’t for it’s predecessors? It’s a new developer after all, and there’s plenty of recent examples of celebrated and successful series that have taken a hit thanks to the changing of developers.

        3. MP, children, and the casual gamers. Pretty much the only reason why anyone plays Halo anyways is the MP. No one cares about the story – same goes for the Call of Duty games.

I have to disagree, I remember playing Halo for the first time pretty much a decade ago. I remember picking up that hulking original Xbox (not 360) controller. I also remember how dramatic the music was, how amazing the story was, and how awesome each character was. It got to the point where I picked up the first 3 novels: Halo: Fall of Reach, First Strike, The Flood. Mind you I was freaking 10 years old at the time and I enthusiastically picked up these books and read them over and over because I loved Halos story. When I heard that Halo 2 was coming out I was SUPER happy, and then kinda sad that they kinda stunted Halo 2s growth by not having enough time to develope it. Ultimately your statement about saying “No one cares about the story” is wrong, in my opinion that’s the true reason I play Halo, and MP comes as a cool bonus.

  • Verus

The game will not be on PC.

    “No PC version?
Nope. Bungie consistently referred to Destiny as a “console shooter.””

“We did a bunch of ambitious things on Halo deliberately to reach out to
people,” Jones continued. “We made the game run without a mouse and
keyboard, and now nobody plays [first-person shooters] the old way
anymore because they don’t want to.”

Basically they don´t give a crap about PC users. They don´t call it an mmo either it sounds more like borderlands in space where you play together with 2-3 other friends.
