Player Created Event Turns Jita Red

For those who might have missed it, there was a bit of trouble in the main hub of EVE Online‘s New Eden last weekend.

Jita — the central point for commerce within the internet space ship game — was the focal point of a mass suicide attack several months in the making.

The event, called Burn Jita, was a Goonswarm organized event involving thousands of ships built for the sole purpose of flying into the trade hub, firing off a shot and dying at the hand of Concord — EVE’s NPC space police.

What was the purpose of this event?  Well,  it shakes up the economy of the game a bit and forces industrialist players who were pretty comfortable with how things are going to recover from the event — and maybe rethink how safe they really are.

It’s also just a perfectly EVE thing to do.

For those who may be wondering where CCP stood on all this.  They loved it.  Their senior producer CCP Unifex even said it was “****ing brilliant”.  CCP knew about the event in advance and used it as an opportunity to do some testing and work on their servers.   CCP Explorer has a writeup on all the technical stuff over here.

I have to say, I love EVE for this stuff.  The players are geniuses — if brutal.

Events like this are what make this game amazing. But if you don’t get involved with them it’s never going to happen to you. People seem to hear stories in this game and join expecting that stuff to instantly happen to them. It happens because you make it happen, not because you joined the game. EvE is very much what you make it to be.

Very true.  I played EVE for about a year — quitting only because I really didn’t have time to play it the way I wanted.  I can honestly say I never had a bad experience. But I never assumed I was safe either.  I never got to be in any of those kinds of events just because of timing, but I still love the idea of them and that EVE allows that.

People talk all the time about wanting what they do to affect their personal story.  In EVE you make your personal story.

“built for the soul purpose” should be “built for the sole purpose”

WoW, they pop a bunch of noobs… that sounds so fun… omg! we are having tons of fun…

Jita is not a noob-centric hub.  All newbies start out in areas far less populated.  What Jita is is a major center of commerce full of industrialists who make a very large amount of money mining, building and selling things and moving things around.

Think of this more as what would happen if a lot of (non-internet) pirates got together and attacked London at once.

That many ships on screen would freeze my computer, blow it up, short out the transformers outside, burn down my apartment and flatten my street with a relatively small mushroom cloud.

    Sounds like fun!

If I still had the time to play, I probably would have been one of the people losing my ship and money on the deal.  But I’d fight back as much as I could and have fun the entire time. :D
