CCP‘s been kind of busy lately.
Inferno, EVE Online‘s 17th free expansion just launched and CCP has opened signups for the beta of Dust 514. The game — an MMOFPS set in the EVE Online universe — marks CCP’s first venture into the console world.
To go along with the announcement of beta signups, the company has also released a new developer diary talking about the premise behind the game. According to the video, Dust is CCP’s way of showing off an aspect of the EVE universe that has always been there: planet life. It is also designed to allow people who love the EVE universe, but find it too complicated to have a way to be involved with it.
Interestingly, the developers also explain that in order to allow players a less complex way of being involved in the persistent universe of New Eden, they specifically decided to go with a console format — even considering at one point turning EVE into a console port.
Currently, no one can say for certain, but it’s possible that those fans hoping for a PC version of this game may be out of luck. The developers make it pretty clear that CCP knew they wanted to make a console game before they had even considered what kind of game it would be.
