CCP Games Releases a New Developer Diary For Dust 514

CCP‘s been kind of busy lately.

Inferno, EVE Online‘s 17th free expansion just launched and CCP has opened signups for the beta of Dust 514.   The game — an MMOFPS set in the EVE Online universe  — marks CCP’s first venture into the console world.

To go along with the announcement of beta signups, the company has also released a new developer diary talking about the premise behind the game.  According to the video, Dust is CCP’s way of showing off an aspect of the EVE universe that has always been there: planet life.  It is also designed to allow people who love the EVE universe, but find it too complicated to have a way to be involved with it.

Interestingly, the developers also explain that in order to allow players a less complex way of being involved in the persistent universe of New Eden, they specifically decided to go with a console format  — even considering at one point turning EVE into a console port.

Currently, no one can say for certain, but it’s possible that those fans hoping for a PC version of this game may be out of luck.  The developers make it pretty clear that CCP knew they wanted to make a console game before they had even considered what kind of game it would be.

Other then Guild Wars 2 this game is something ive been looking forward to see ! im not much of a console gamer but the fact its a hybrid/cross platform play..etc is really something that isnt explored enough and its going to be nice to see how plays out

After seeing this I have to say it looks a little more interesting then I originally thought it would be. Was never really into EVE all that much but it does look interesting. Might have to keep an eye on this game and maybe get into EVE a bit.

CCP has shown everyone they can make extremely bad decisions , wich make the community angry. I have no idea why they chose a (in my opinion console gameplay compared to pc gameplay is like beating a handicaped kid with it’s own wheelchair) console platform. Say goodby to possibly 80% of the people interested in the game. Because I’m pritty shure if u’re an eve player and u have a pc , and dust was available on PC , you would instantly buy it.

Try being a little more open minded. Yes they can make bad decisions, but so what? Every developer does at some point. What matters is how they respond to the backlash from those decisions.

THEY TOLD YOU why they chose a console platform and different gameplay. They literally JUST told you that in the video. Did you watch it?

As an EvE player since 2007, I was disappointed at first to find out DUST would be a PS3 only game at launch.  I have since warmed up to the idea of being on console primarily due to all the hacking in PC FPSers.  I also found out I can use both a keyboard and mouse for the PS3.

The one drawback I see is the graphical capabilities of the PS3 compared to a PC.  BF3 is gorgeous.  I know DUST won’t hold a candle to it but the question is, will I like the game enough to overlook that?

EvE is a beautiful game.  I can honestly say it looks better than any MMO out there ( just watch one of my  YouTube vids and you will see for yourself.)  The Carbon engine (the same one used in EvE from what I understand) is  being used in DUST.  This gives me hope that it will look good enough despite being on the PS3.  Only time will tell I suppose.
