Colin Johanson spoke with MMORPG.com last week and dropped some information regarding the upcoming guild missions in Guild Wars 2. Scheduled to arrive in the February game update, guild missions will fill a content gap that actually gives players a reason to get together and play with their guilds.

Guilds will research missions that they can activate, which will create open world content for them (and others) to enjoy. Parts of the mission can only be completed by the guild that spawned them, but there are also components that anyone can assist with. Content created by a guild will often feature a banner with the guild’s name and emblem displayed, which is a great for gaining server reputation and helping with recruitment.

Mr. Johanson described one type of guild mission called a “guild rush”. During a guild rush, members of the guild are challenged with completed an objective a certain number of times before time runs out. Success grants the guild with a reward token that can be traded in for guild-wide bonuses. Any guild member who helps with the guild rush will get a new type of guild reward that will be implemented in the next game update. In addition, anyone who participates in the guild rush will receive a personal reward regardless of their guild affiliation.

One example of a guild reward mentioned in the interview was lower waypoint costs for the entire guild. There’s also a toy that can transform you into your guild’s banner, which can be gained as a personal reward.

When guild missions are first introduced they will be strictly PvE and will occur entirely in the open world. ArenaNet is open, however, to possibly introducing guild missions in other areas of the game going forward.

In summary, it looks like guild will be able to create content in the open world for themselves and others to enjoy and there are incentives for doing so on an individual and guild level. It’s hard to argue with more content and more rewards!

Don’t forget to check out the full interview for information on other features coming in the February update and let us know what you think about guild missions in the comments section below!

WOW… that’s some old beta footage isn’t it?

This definitely sounds like a great start to implementing more for guilds to do in PvE. My guild has been doing “guild group events” where we sort of just run through a zone, tackle some of the harder champions or bosses and events, essentially creating our own content. Something that has a bit more structure to it though, like this guild mission system, seems like a really good implementation for the game.

While I don’t think this system by it self will solve all of the issues guilds are having in PvE at the moment, I do think it’s a great start. Also, with them going back and making some of the open world bosses a little more interesting and challenging It sounds like guilds might find that they have a lot more to do on the PvE side of things, aside from just dungeons, in the months to come.

My only fear is that I hope they don’t go overboard with some of the guild rewards and keep them cosmetic or fun convenience items. Or else you sort of run into that issue that WoW had with cataclysm when they first introduced their guild perks system. It ended up being extremely difficult for new guilds to form, because people only wanted to join guilds that had all of these perks for their character.

I have high hopes for this system though, and it definitely seems like they’re going in the right direction with their push on strengthening their open world content. It seems like something a lot of MMO’s should be doing as opposed to sectioning everything off in an instance. Once again thanks for the hit and the great information guys!

Can’t wait! Finally some more of the Guild in Guild Wars 2.

It was hard to tell, but it sounds like you do the content once and you are done. Did they mention how many Guild Mission would be in the patch?  It does sound like content that can be consumed fairly quickly.

It seemed like it was more that there would be a few varieties of mission types and hopefully with some serious variables.  I’m assuming they’re going to be about the difficulty of an Orr temple DE since those were originally intended to be a thing for guilds to do.

  • DoctorOverlord

Interesting interview. It’s great that this mechanic is in the open world. It seems like that would help build community on a server.

I wonder if there is a restriction on how many guild events can be activated at the same time in the same zone?   I can see several guilds trying to do several at once.

Would be good if these missions could spawn some rare mobs that are not usually seen in the world. I remember some three headed hydra from GW1, but I have not seen it in GW2 yet.

IIRC they were only found in the Crystal Desert, which is gated off at the moment in Guild Wars 2. Hopefully this area and some of its foes will show up in Guild Wars 2 at some point.

      • Chris Catone

Technically they also ran around the area that’s now the Black Citadel and the Ring of Fire Islands.  I’d like to see some returning critters though…except for the wind riders…those got toned down a little much.

Hopefully this will introduce something that’s really lacking in GW2: “long-distance” (multi-zone) quests.

The hearts and dynamic events tend to have all objectives in a very small area (typically near the NPC that starts / ends the event), which doesn’t really encourage players to travel.  By having an NPC in one zone that asks players to complete objectives in 3 or 4 different zones, maybe the mid-level areas won’t be so dead, and maybe cities can become more useful.

The holiday scavenger hunt quests were pretty successful, but they sent everyone to the same 4 or 5 places. If they add 4 or 5 different “scavenger hunt starters” to each city, that will get people moving a bit more. Supposedly they’re working on scavenger hunts for legendary precursors, too (something people have been suggesting since beta).

Old Ben’s Back!  Where you been man!  Missed that deep and thoughtful insight.  :)
