Taking CCPs Dust 514 For A Spin

As E3 continues our own Gary Gannon continues the grueling task of checking out the offerings on the show floor.

This time, Gary got to spend some time with Dust 514.  Now, this is a game a lot of people have been fairly interested in because of it’s integration with EVE Online as well as it’s PlayStation3 only status.

Personally, I’ve been very interested to see how well CCP pulls this off.  Will it be a complete success that proves all the doubters wrong? Or, will it crash and burn like so many capsuleers during Hulkageddon?

I really hope this game is good, but who knows. It has a ton of potential though, so I just hope CCP can pull it off.

CCP you have got to grab the ball and run otherwise damn.

Well damn, I was looking forward to this. Well see how release goes.

I kind of lost all hype for it after watching more Planetside 2 gameplay though and getting those nostalgic moments.

One of the things I really like about GBTV and Gary is his frank honesty.   Too often gaming sites are all about supporting the hype of the devs and companies and that just gets tiring.   It’s nice to see a site that’s not afraid to give straight opinions about what they see.  Keep it up!   You folks are awesome!

It sounds like CCP really needs to put some work into DUST but frankly even if they make it into a decent FPS I still can’t see console FPS players being willing to interact with MMO PC gamers.     I still believe the kind of backstabbing for which EVE is best known will make every FPS player wonder why they are playing a game where some PC gamer can screw them without any real way to get back at them.   (Being able to attack ships in orbit is not sufficient).

I’ve had my doubts about the whole concept but that’s not to say CCP might not be able to make it work.   But before all of that they need to make a decent FPS game and it sounds like they have some work to do on that front.

Being able to shoot Eve ships out of space sounds awesome, but I don’t think that it will be the only way to seek vengeance on a backstabbing corp.

I’m curious as to just how important holding planets is to Eve. If a corporation is unable to hold any planets because they treated every Dust merc group like dirt, will they be able to stay afloat? That is how you get revenge against a backstabbing eve player.

If works out like that, the game mechanic could function.   It seems equally likely that things could get blown out of proportion (this being the Internet afterall) and potential DUST players could become convinced every corps acts like that.   CCP might have uphill battle with the marketing and need to convince console players that there are honorable corps.

Even then I can’t see any console player willing to sit there and take orders of any kind from a PC gamer.    But it will be an interesting experiment, I’ll give it that.

I think it will be hard to judge a game like this based on one play through. What makes a game like Dust so exciting is the intrigue, espionage, and backstabbing. I do feel that CCP dropped the ball as far as their E3 showing is concerned though. They didn’t show anything new, and to not include any Eve connectivity just makes this game look like it’s fighting with a foot in a bucket.

I am still excited for this title though, and I’m looking forward to having more time to enjoy the beta that I just got into.

P.S. Also should probably invest in a headset…
    P.P.S. PlanetSide 2 also looks amazing…
