As most of you are aware by now, the US consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi was stormed during a protests and four Americans were killed. Of the four, two have been identified as of this writing. One is the US ambassador to LIbya J. Christopher Stevens. The other is Foreign Service Information Management Officer, Sean Smith.
While these attacks may seem like they are a world away and honestly par-for-the-course in today’s world, the death of Sean Smith has hit a little closer to home for the gaming community — particularly for the EVE Online Community and the Goons.
Sean — known as “Vile Rat” within EVE — was a prominent member of the EVE Online universe, known not only to his own corp mates but by members of almost any corporation throughout New Eden. He was a long standing member of the Counsel of Stellar Management and elected to play EVE as a diplomat.
Despite the time I’ve spent in EVE on and off, I never met Smith. But those who knew him have already begun writing some beautiful tributes that make me wish I had. Several members of the EVE Online community have already begun paying tribute to him on the official EVE forums or in personal blog posts. If you are not a member of the EVE online forums and want to leave condolences for the family, I would suggest a comment on The Mittani’s blog post, as Smith’s wife has been reading and responding there.
