FFXIV Gamepad Functionality Showcased

PC Gamers May Prefer the FFXIV Gamepad Controls

I am in my FFXIV GLORY today! After about a month of almost NO FFXIV information, today Square Enix dropped a bunch of goodies about their upcoming MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (FFXIV). In addition to the benchmark reveal and a world walkthrough video, Square Enix also gave us an in depth look at the FFXIV gamepad control scheme and how it fits in with not only PS3 players, but (surprisingly!) PC gamers.

During the almost 14 minute FFXIV gamepad walkthrough we get to take a peek at a standard left and right joystick combination for movement and the camera, D-pad model targeting, party specific targeting and, of course, hotbar usage. MMO gamers familiar with DC Universe Online‘s gamepad scheme are sure to be at ease with the FFXIV gamepad control scheme.

Yoshi-P, Producer, also shows off combat using the gamepad. Targeting seems natural and even movement between certain skill chains seems to work very comfortably. Skills are chained together pretty easily through switching hotbar sets and using L2 and R2 buttons to specify sides of the hotbar.

All in all the FFXIV gamepad control scheme seems smooth to me and of coure it is fully customizable as well. Even though I am traditionally a mouse and keyboard kind of guy I think I’ll give the FFXIV gamepad  a test drive. My wife certainly liked the video since she is looking forward to playing FFXIV on the PS3…I know, don’t judge me, I can’t get her to play on a PC for the life of me. mmorpg final fantasy xiv FFXIV Gamepad Functionality Showcased

What are your thoughts? Is mouse and keyboard the only way to go in your book or did the video show you enough that a controller may be a viable option for you?

If your looking to play this with a controller on the PC I highly recommend the Xbox 360 controller for windows. From what I hear the FFXIV controller that was released along side 1.0 (the one used in the image for this article) is a piece of junk.

100% agree. If I do decide to play with a controller it will certainly be my XBOX PC controller.

You can use the PS3 controller on PC as well. It requires some minor setup but anyone who prefers the PS3 controller should look into it.

The logitech controller that they were demoing in the video is just as good as the Xbox 360 controller, and is preferred by many people who are used to playing on the PS3.

Well, that settles it. I’m going controller all the way. I love me some mouse and keyboard action, but I fly that gamepad-using flag high and proud. Give me the option and make it good and I’m all in. Now stop releasing videos and let me give you my money, Square,

Now THIS I like. Tired of always having to use mouse and keyboard on the PC.  Sometimes I just want to sit back and play with something that’s compact and just there rather than having my hands all over the place.  You can use software to set up controllers on PC but it’s still hard to use even with the best settings.  Nice to see that the controls on this actually look useful.  Not a huge fan of this particular FF title, but at least if this is successful, other companies might follow suit and include controller support.

The comment section in Facebook are so pathetic.
I guess some people just love to hate the game for the sake if hating.
Anyway, will not play with controller unless i decide to play it on PS3/4, otherwise prefer mouse and keyboard .

Played FFXI on PS2 and it felt great on the controller. Even after I got it again on PC later, it still felt much better than mouse/keyboard, but that could be because I was so used to the controller at that point.

Controls look pretty much identical to XI, the cross-hotbar being the exception. Not sure how I feel about that. In XI, the bar was an actual bar that popped up at the top on the screen once you held L2/R2 instead of having that clutter at the bottom of the screen at all times. I suppose the cross is a bit quicker at getting abilities off. In XI, you had to scroll across the bar when it was up, then select the ability. One extra step there, but then combat in XI wasn’t so fast that the extra second or less of scrolling would make any difference really.

Also, I really hope there is a camera lock-on feature, especially for combat, dude didn’t use it in the video.

yea because we dont need typing in an mmo lets play a solo ff with the mmo label…. 2.5 sec global gcd. the guy hit litteraly 4 buttons to kill the mob. looks even worse than wow’s combat….sad this company has gone so down hill. just money grubbers now. their own controller….roflmao

The guy is like 10 levels above the monster… What do you expect from a fight like that in other MMOs, a 100 skills per kill?

What does HAI mean? HAI HAI HAI HAI.

    • http://twitter.com/Master10K Master10K

“Hai” literally translates to “Yes” but depending on the context, it can mean just a form of acknowledgement. But yeah, they kinda over did it. XD

      • http://twitter.com/JuhTai James Megretton

I’ve always seen Hai as an internet form of “Hi” or “Hey”. In Finland, alot of internet dwellers take it as a form as Hello as “Hei” is Hello in Finnish :)

        • http://twitter.com/AmythielOMG Kamil

Hai in Japanese is used as an acknowledgement. Literally ‘yes’ but also at the beginning of a sentence “So” (eg. So, we’ve done that)
