Square Enix Enacts Legacy Pricing For Final Fantasy XIV

Square Enix is doing everything it can to get players to come back to — or keep playing — Final Fantasy XIV.

The company recently announced the implementation of Legacy Pricing once version 2.0 of the game goes live. Players with active paid accounts for 90 days between Jan. 6, 2012 and the start of beta testing 2.0 will pay just $9.99 per month for their future subscription, for life.

These “Legacy” subscribers will also receive an exclusive chocobo mount when 2.0 goes live and have their names appear in the credits for 2.0.

Additionally, Square Enix will host a Welcome Back Campaign from May 9 to May 20, allowing players with lapsed subscriptions to log into the game and see all the changes that have been made.

While these are good initiatives, it’s hard to imagine too much future business coming from them. It’ll take a strong showing from version 2.0 to fully revive the game, and until players can see how that turns out, it’ll probably be a slow uphill climb for FFXIV.

FF14 has drastically improved since Yoshi P has taken over. People who are thinking of giving it a  shot again should take advantage of the Welcome Back Campaign. I just find it weird that they are doing this now and not for 2.0

When ver 2.0 goes into beta in October/November anyone who has purchased FFXIV will get to play for free until January when the game gets relaunched.

So effectively they will have a 2nd welcome back campaign that will last for 3 months come ver 2.0 beta.

Right now they are just trying to get people to come and take a peek at all the revamps and changes they have done, which are numerous!

However all these incentives are for the angry customers who bought the game. I think they are forgetting that A TON of people didn’t buy it at all because it sucked so hard. People like me who never bought because we waited for reviews have had NO incentive to try it. All the F2P garbage they have been throwing out is only for people who purchased and subbed. This will cause the company to fail because they are not going to bring in ANY new people, and I doubt they will manage to even bring back a portion of the people who did actually get it.

I had such high hopes for this game being the avid Final fantasy fan that i am i tottally disregarded all the negative things i heard about the game before launch and bought it anyways.
Three days later i canceled my sub and was pissed off about eating the box cost for such a POS. I went back when it was free to play and still could not stomach the game the sluggish response times. At this point it would take a miracle to get me back into that game and no way in hell I’d pay a sub. Especially not with GW2 coming out and Tera launching tomorrow in the US.

going to try the welcome back, but it would have to be somehow the best kept secret in mmo land how amazing it is now for me to sub for 3 months.

    $10 a month – until it goes F2P.

omg why!!? Why are companies being so stupid. Square Enix is 100% relying on the FF fanbase to keep this game afloat. I loved FF games, FFX was my first game when I got my PS2 but when FF11 came out I was too young to pay for a sub game so I missed that boat. So when I heard about FFXIV I was sooooo excited… then I saw gameplay videos…. and wept. This game may have been the biggest let down… of ALL TIME! And they think they can still charge people for it!!??? And what about people like me who foretold of its suckness and never bought it? They are giving no one like me any insentive to try it (not that I’m saying I even would if they did). This game will fail again, even if it is actually good due to the crappy business decisions Square Enix has chosen. I don’t even think they will last long enough to design ANOTHER relaunch into the F2P business model. All I have to say now is, they better not screw up my Kingdom Hearts because that’s the only thing Square Enix is good for now.
