Funcom Lifts the NDA On The Secret World's Closed Beta

Closed beta testers for The Secret World are doing a happy dance on the TSW forums right now.

Funcom has finally lifted the NDA that has been hanging over their heads for so long.

Starting today, testers are allowed to talk about their experiences in the CBT as well as share videos and screenshots.

There is one caveat: when Funcom says “as of today”, they mean that all prior CBT content is still under NDA.  Also, any posts on the CBT forum are still under NDA. This includes past, present and future communication via those forums.

With the NDA lifting, I’m curious as to how many testers are going to work on actual testing, rather than joining everyone else for the beta weekend event.  Right now I’m a little torn.  But I still have a day to decide.

    There was an NDA?
I have seen and heard way too much about TSW that I figured they just let people talk LOL

Does look good based on the Marc Jacobs rule:

Mark Jacobs talks about the NDA lift :

“As to NDAs, the rule I’ve always gone by is my “time before release rule” in order to judge the confidence the publishers have in their new game (doesn’t apply to ports or games that are already out in other places). I add a +1 for every week prior to release that the game’s NDA has been lifted and come up with a score. If 8, they really believe in the game. WoW had a great score (the highest I believe) and some of the MMOs that failed, had, as expected, low scores. A score of 4 is just about the minimum you should expect from a MMO publisher.”

    • Odeezee

HAHA, did you even bother reading the rule you quoted? the NDA is lifted ~14 days prior to release, which gives the game a score of 2 which is LESS than the 4 that he says is the minimum you should expect from an MMO.

sometimes i worry about you dude, you just write without thought and severely hurt any credibility your argument might have had. please do not try to support TSW, you seem to only hinder people’s perceptions of it whenever you commit your thoughts to a post.

      • Sharuko

I meant “doesn’t”, calm down bro.

Amazing game, combat system and animations are trash.  Combat has a really good concept, but the execution is questionable.

    • Acropolypse

Totally agree – game has incredible atmosphere and some of the mission arcs are second-to-none in terms of story and varied challenges. The freedom in character development is also fantastic, though there are still balance issues in terms of some some power/ability chains being far superior to others. Combat has potential though currently it’s flawed, deck system is great, animations are still pretty bad even though they’ve improved them from older builds. Also the game difficulty seems to ramp up massively once you hit Blue Mountain (3rd zone), and combat adds (even ‘trash’ mobs) usually end in death. The game really punishes you for not sticking to one or two complementary power trees, and before they added respeccing (yesterday) it basically meant if you ‘wasted’ your points picking powers that didn’t work really well together you had to go back and replay a bunch of lowbie missions to get more points so you can have a chance against content which supposedly is at your level.

Great game, but the combat needs more work.

The box plus sub plus cash shop pricing is a horrible scam. Around Thanksgiving they will have less than 500K sales and less than 100K  subs and put in some F2Pish option.   The game is set up to sell content by the map just like Wizard 101. Thats when I’ll start playing it. Most of the bugs and polish resolved by then also. :)

typical button spamming combat, terrible animations, a dx11 engine that looks like it’s dx9… I was actually shocked of how low the quality of the game was right from the character create screen….

Did they learn nothing from AoC?

    f2p G1-2013.

    • H S

I was actually taken back by it as well.
Game would be awesome as a B2P game, since  so many quests are puzzle quests, but with a sub, people will feel pressured to run through content and will see puzzle quests as a setback. Which is a shame.

Terrible animations, lack of polish, lipsync is a joke. Combat is fun, but nothing special. Overall, played it for 20 minutes and uninstalled.

Good luck with the p2p model. o.O

    • tehixe

Yeah, I’d say it’s good for an f2p game, but it it isn’t f2p.  It will be though, or I’ll eat my hat.  Except they don’t allow you to start with hats in TSW, so I’ll have to eat my glasses, available in TWO dorky styles at character creation!  Woo!

the area is solomon island, but we only got to play in kingsmouth town and savage coast, not blue mountains which is also a part of solomon island :P
