Funcom Reveals The Secret World's The Darkness War Dungeon

It’s not secret that players are going to see some strange things in The Secret World.  After all, there’s zombies, witches, secret societies buried deep in conspiracies and Dracula.  But, some might be surprised upon entering “The Darkness War” dungeon.

In fact, the quest already starts off a little strange when a member of the Wabanaki native American tribe tells players to take a nap in a sleeping bag This kicks off a sort of vision quest showing events that occurred in the same place 1,000 years before.

T.J. Hafer at PC Gamer got a peek at the events that took place, and from his description, the history we’ve been taught isn’t exactly right.   At this point in time the Wabanaki are battling off invading Mayans who want to turn a dragon trapped in the mountains lose on the landscape.  And, as if that weren’t enough to worry about, the Vikings decide to that moment would be a great time to join the party and bring Excalibur along for good measure.

At this point, I’m a little confused as to why Vikings are running around the world with King Arthur’s sword, but I guess that’s a bit minor compared to Mayans trying to turn a dragon loose in Maine.

Really, I’m sure there are perfectly good explanations for all of this, but I suppose I’ll have to wait until I play the instance to find out what they are.

I’ve played all three Beta Weekends and think it’s a great game and pre-ordered on the basis of what I’ve seen and experienced.

The only fly in the ointment is the ridiculous monthly subscription fee, the details of which Funcom have just released. Whilst Americans are asked to pay the standard $14.99 a month, British gamers are expected to pay £12.99, a whopping 44% above what Americans pay.

Naturally, the British gamers are up-in-arms on the official Funcom forum; no one from the company seems willing to explain just why we’re expected to pay more. In fact, the threads in which the matter is raised are being moved and merged in quiet, out-of-the way parts of the board.

Why Funcom believe that British gamers are going to settle to be ripped off like this, essentially paying £4.00 a month more than Americans (and way above the standard subscription fee for an AAA MMORPG is unknown, but I suspect their sales will take a hit in the British market.

I’ve pre-ordered, so am committed for the first month, at least. But the game is going to have be very good indeed to justify such a high price.

I was about to pre-order until I saw the thread on the forums earlier. I can afford it, but I won’t pay it on principle. I don’t expect anything else from EA though to be honest.
