Blizzard Confirms RaF Bonuses For Monks
37 Comments

After weeks of speculation Blizzard finally gave players some answers regarding leveling up in Mists of Pandaria.

With the launch date for MoP fast approaching, a hotly discussed topic in the forums was whether or not Pandaren and Monks would be eligible for Scroll of Resurrection and Recruit-a-Friend benefits and rewards.

Will it be possible to have an instant 80 monk on launch day?

The short answer is yes. Zarhym confirmed that no changes will be made to the Recruit-a-Friend program:

“We’re not making any changes to the way RaF bonuses function, which means monks won’t be excluded from receiving the benefits of RaF when Mists of Pandaria is released.”

Meaning you could theoretically grant levels to a brand new baby monk and have an instant 80, and still be eligible for the realm first level 90 monk feat of strength.

If you were hoping to be able to use a Scroll of Resurrection to boost yourself a level 80 monk you’re out of luck. They updated the SoR blog post, adding in a few interesting restrictions and changes. The biggest would probably be this:

“Players who receive a Scroll of Resurrection will not be able to apply rewards (e.g. boost to level 80) to monk characters.”

So there you have it, RaF will give you a “free” level 80 monk, but SoR won’t. Will you be using RaF to boost a monk to 80? What do you think about not restricting the level granting? Let us know in the comments below!

Still being eligable for realm first Monk after boosting it is just dumb. I don’t mind getting a level 80 Monk quickly. But still being able to take a realm first is not very smart.

I liked BC when the added Paladins to Horde and Shaman to Alliance.  That was a fun race.  Now it’s just whoever spends the most money gets there first.

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Nope, if you want level boost, get a friend or buy a new account.    Spending extra on a new account will not get you to 90 first.

It’s a level playing field, it just doesn’t require you to level from 1 to 90.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Why?  As long as everyone knows the rules.  Players that work on realm first, always seem to prepare. No difference than the player collecting a ton of mats to grind out green level points for world first professions.

      • Old Ben

So, Blizzard sells you a pack with 80% of those mats, too?

I don’t really know how I feel about it. It’s not like I was going to try to get the achievement or anything, but this sort of ruins the spirit of competition a little bit, eh? At least for this race to the finish. It’s really a no brainer that the right thing to do would be to leave the monks out of this for a  week tops. But hey money is money, and I’m sure Blizz is just hoping that this move attracts more people to get extra accounts or some friends to come in.

If they continue to let me, I will. Not for the hunt for server first but to help me not fall behind my guildies for raiding.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=613400106 Francois Brisson

Oh look Blizzard is taking more of the competitiveness out of the game… how surprising.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Robbert-de-Wilde/1806039882 Robbert de Wilde

Ofc they allow RaF and not SoF, because it makes a lot more money. Because people WILL do it. God I’m so glad I’m not playing WoW anymore… all this B/S since Cata. How to destroy a community by Blizzard Entertainment.

Blizzard: Putting the PAY in Pay2Win since 2012…

      • Old Ben

It worse than that. You even have to pay to lose! ;-)

        • Jay

           Sad, but true…

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

lol, you guys are so funny.

    • Svenskalkoholkultur

Iy’s funny to see how ex WoW players act like AA-members.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/Z36GPOU3Q2QIQYBIDVNQAVGNGE Raul

    Oh, by all means.

And maybe they could have another 30 minute epic cloak, too.
Hell, why not just give full epic gear to anyone that re-subs?

C’thun sighs, and goes back to sleep.

I think they should restrict level granting to Monks. All this does is make monk lvl 90 world/realm firsts exclusive to people willing to spend the time/money ahead of time to level 2 new toons to 80 before MoP. Kind of sounds like a crock to me.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Sounds like a plan on how to quickly get world first Monk out of the way.  Instead of forcing players to level from 1 to 90.

      • Jay

They forced players to do it before, so why stop now? It cheapens the achievements for those who prefer to do it the hardcore way…

Lol I guess it makes sense, since WOW has been catering to casuals for awhile now. Now that I think about it, I’m not surprised at all.

  • http://twitter.com/BarrensChat2 Benjamin aka Beowülf

I also find it hilarious that trolls like Robbert de Wilde who are “so glad I’m not playing WoW anymore” still find themselves coming to places like this and crying about a game they aren’t playing or going to play.

    Trolls gonna troll, I guess.

    • http://www.facebook.com/kparrott Kimberly Parrott

      lmfao I know right???

  • http://www.facebook.com/Dexiled Kurt Camilleri

this is bs cause in EU not all countries can use either RaF or SoR… which is unfair to the countries that can’t.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Now that is a bummer.  Sounds more like a limitation put in by government and not sound business practices.

      • http://www.facebook.com/Dexiled Kurt Camilleri

the point is blizz knows about this and still continues with this bs…. giving an advantage to fist size of countries while the rest get screwed. i know in the us is different but i dont give a rats arse about usa since it doesn’t concern me…. btu blizz deals on both front so they should consider their choices more carefully.

      • Old Ben

Yes, because governments make laws about specific features of WoW…

  • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

I’m okay with the level boost for Monks. Some guildies have asked for a Monk level boost for raiding.  They wanted to add a Monk to their stable of raiding toons, but didn’t really have the time to level all their toons from 85 to 90 and level a brand new toon from 1-90.  I’ve already picked up my WoW Battlechest for $5, so should be interesting to see how far I get.

Server first should be fine, seems everyone already knows the rules.  So it’s a level playing field.   Using RaF doesn’t seem to be a big secret.  I suspect some folks will still level a new “Ironman” Monk, who levels from 1-90 without bonuses, that should be fun.

    • Deathstar2x

It’s not a level playing field— and that’s the issue.
If you want Server First 90 Monk without paying money, it’s not possible.

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Sure it is. It’s called Recruit a Friend.  Just get one of your friends to join WoW.
You don’t have to buy it for them.

While I purchased a $5 Battlechest, I will probably end up giving the account to a friend or family member.

        • Deathstar2x

If your friends are already playing World of Warcraft or just not into video games, then Recruit-A-Friend option is the only way to obtain Server First 90 Monk.
I’m torn on that part since it’s actually “Recruit Yourself” to a lot people. I guarantee that most people going for the Server First (Monk) are recruiting themselves if that situation occurs.

      • http://glacius.pip.verisignlabs.com/ Glacius

You could just not care about rather meaningless accolades and simply play the game.  I don’t know why or how MMORPGs became a competition.  Well, I guess I do, actually. It’s Blizzard’s fault for even having the game acknowledge server firsts.

That said, if people are the weird sort who get together a huge organized group to exploit game mechanics just so they can get some arbitrary recognition that nobody will care about 5 minutes later, I don’t think paying another however-much-it-costs-for-that-other-account is going to discourage them.

        • Deathstar2x

Exactly, games are just for fun. However, if they’re encouraging competition, it should be in the spirit of competition to level the playing field. Simply turn off the RAF for a week (on monks) so that those legitimately seeking that sort of gratification can go enjoy their selfglorification. It’s like getting awarded a few meters for bringing in new athletes to a running track.

Edit: What Joshua Gregory said (below?) can work too.

          • http://twitter.com/BradleyHainje Bradley Hainje

I will openly admit that I am using the RaF “exploit” to boost a monk to lvl 90, simply because my 25m guild wanted a monk dps/tank. However, turning the RaF off for a week would mean that while all my guildies have to gain a simple 5 lvls before they can start gearing up for raids, I have to grind 90 lvls to get to the same position.  This option allows people like me to get into raids just that much sooner.
I, honestly, could care less about server-first anything, unless it grants the player a title, which this will not.
So people like me can pay $35 to raid sooner, and other people can waste $35 to try to get an FoS that they will probably miss out on by 15 minutes to someone else.
Blizzard is not greedy in this case. In fact, I am glad they took this stance.
Also the $35 of mine wont be fully wasted. Not only to i get a lvl 80 monk on day one, but i get a new mount. Then I am giving the RaF’ed account to a friend so they can start play WoW MoP for only $50. Win.

    • Old Ben

      > Server first should be fine, seems everyone already
      > knows the rules. So it’s a level playing field.

Yep, it’s pay to win for everyone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chaoscorp20 Joshua Gregory

They should keep the RaF bonus for Monks but not allow the realm first achievement for anyone who didn’t actually level 1-90 Then there will still be competition for the achiev and still allow raiders to quickly catch up to their guilds with new monks

  • http://twitter.com/Deadalon Deadalon

More tricks just so they can get more money.  Just sad to see.

Why not just let ppl play 10 extra bucks for lvl 80 chracter then ?

Again – just sad to see what greed does to companies.

    • http://twitter.com/BradleyHainje Bradley Hainje

Blizzard is not stealing money from anyone… They are simply allowing a system that has been in place for years to remain.  If people choose to use this system to boost, it is their own choice and their money.
The funny thing here is that Blizzard is a COMPANY. They do what they do to make MONEY. Yes, most of the emploees love what they do and love that they are able to bring joy to other people through their product. But Blizzard is, in fact, a for-profit BUSINESS. Stop QQing. They are smart and good at what they do… Which is make MONEY.

EU only? Guess that answers the question on where the 1.1 million sub loss was.

  • Pernille Sylvest

I am actually eligeble for a boost, but I think, I will rather use if either late in my monks life, so I get the whole race starter experience (loved the worgen one) before jumping hoops, or spend it on the other low character I have left.
