Guild Wars 2 Asura Homelands Video From GameSpot

If you can’t wait until the next BWE in just over a week and a half to see what the Asura are all about in Guild Wars 2, then you’ll want to see what GameSpot’s Kevin VanOrd did with the diminutive geniuses in an hour-long session co-hosted by ArenaNet‘s Mike Zadorojny.

You start off in the Asuran capital city of Rata Sum where — shockingly — something has gone wrong with an experiment, and golems are rampaging all around the city. Turns out the Inquest is involved and, with a little help from Asuran heroine Zojja and her golem, Mr. Sparkles, you save the day.

Once out of the opening area, the ego of the Asuran race is in full force as players are routinely berated for their lack of intelligence, all the while “assisting” — because Asura don’t really need “help” as much as they need expendable lab assistants — with experiments, putting out fires (literally), working on various repairs and projects, countering the Inquest, and even finding time to play a little RC Golem, a minigame that’s a cross between chess and Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.

There’s over an hour of footage, which includes some slightly higher-level play in the Asura homelands with a Human Thief, so check it out!

    Wow that’s cool

    • Old Ben

Surely you mean “GW2 that’s cool”.

  • Pat Hamilton

The Asura have first world problems.

    • dawolv

While their harvesting golems go rambo and start killing the entire population of Rata Sum, somewhere in Kessex Hills entire Tribes of Hylek STARVE TO DEATH.
      Shame on you, bookahs

  • QSatu

I’m actually surprised Asura don’t look as cutesy as I thought they would. Those teeth make them much more scarry looking =P

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

ArenaNet is doing it right then.  Gnomes are supposed to be nasty.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

but they’ve been insisting Asura are cute for years.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

I love when you start new char and in first 5 minutes you are one shoted by some BAM…

    • http://twitter.com/Master10K Master10K

Nothing to introduce a newcomer, to the wonders of GW2, than being oneshotted like that. ^_^

      • dawolv

You always get one shottet in the tutorial to show off the dying mechanics and get the players used to it. You also can’t die :D

        Seriously, try it!
I was fairly competent in my first tutorial and got downed, so on my second character I just stood in the back and then got downed by something I couldn’t see. But I was still able to rally, because my dmg output while downed was so ridiculous I was almost one-shotting mobs.

You can see it in this video too.
The guy does like 3x as much dmg his first time being downed than ever..

      • Jado Cast

All Bookahs must learn somehow. :-)

  • Calvin Lee

Only have to play Sylvari opening area now :D
*note to self* create a Stitch character

  • http://twitter.com/coreyctom Corey

    moar jumping puzzles!  yay!

  • http://www.facebook.com/adam.asseraf Adam Asseraf

are you not talking about the new features on purpose ?

    • http://twitter.com/cyanpill cyanpill

They have to leave something for the show tonight.

  • RolyVento

    Where is the Sylvari video?!

    • dawolv

Probaly coming up, as they said in the last few minutes…
He shoed off very little I feel, the juming puzzle section was pretty kewl though

  • Sklys

Way to go Jason ! Pick on the little folks. If it were not for the Asura you would have to walk
the world over and not use the gates system.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

That has been in place long before the Asura were mentioned in the world.

      • Old Ben

You mean “before society even recognized them as full citizens”. Things only started to change when Rojja Sparks refused to sit at the back of the golem.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

Sitting at the front of a golem doesn’t seem like a good idea to me or the back. Ideally you sit IN the golem.

          • Old Ben

            Woosh? ;-)

          • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

Nope, I know what you are referring. :)

    • pandora005

Being able to teleport everywhere actually is bad simply because it makes people lazy … oh and we would have had to learn to ride otherwise and could have gotten awesome/cute mounts.
I certainly would have preferred mounts and carriages over teleports.

      • Jado Cast

What you call lazy I call efficient. ;-) besides, mounts smell bad. XD

  • ChristopherRuscoe

they do sound a little Gnome like :P forgive my WOWness

    CWR

    • Oskiee

Thats cause they are GW2′s version of gnomes. But who cares, theyre still awesome.

    • http://twitter.com/cyanpill cyanpill

WoW’s gnomes are based on the tinker gnomes from Dragonlance. Jeff Grubb came up with the tinker gnomes… and the asura.

      • ChristopherRuscoe

ah now this is the first time i have heard of
Dragonlance so i have learned something new.

as for my comment, it is so much fun to mess with fanboys from both side of the WOW          vs GW2 may game is better than yours thing :P

        CWR

        • pandora005

Hopefully you learned more than the fact that Dragonlance existed before WoW … and that would be not to assume anything you dont know is true. I wouldnt be surprised if there were some predecessors to the DL tinker gnomes, but at least it has been proven that WoW didnt do it “first” …

          • http://twitter.com/cyanpill cyanpill

I’d highly recommend this interview with Jeff Grubb: http://www.guildwarsinsider.com/gwi-podcast-interview-jeff-grubb/

Not only does he talk about Guildwars, but he talks about his history with the gaming world, and about DnD and Dragonlance. A very interesting perspective on games that have influenced almost every video game we play these days.

          • ChristopherRuscoe

and you seam to think that i think that wow started every thing (or thats how your post reads) i think of WOW in the same way i think of the Borg.

but any way assumptions there a bad thing to have about people you dont know :)

            CWR

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

WoW didnt invent Gnomes and Elves.

  • http://www.facebook.com/obrienweb Chris O’Brien

    pun intended!

  • Old Ben

The amount of bugs even in that highly controlled demo makes it pretty clear that the reason why the asura weren’t available in previous BWEs was that their starting areas simply weren’t in a playable state.

    • Odeezee

can we really even extrapolate that without making some very grave assumptions? all we know is they are on a dev build of the client and the dev builds are the most volatile as new builds are applies many times per day.

      • Old Ben

Extrapolate? What other reason (other than “not being ready”) can you think of for not having introduced the asura (and sylvari) in BWE2?

Or are you still sticking to the theory that “they’re going to hold back the asura and sylvari for launch”…?

And do you really think they’d give a journalist a demo of something and pick an unstable build, instead of the most stable one they had? Maybe the journalist just happened to wander into Arena Net’s office while the lead content developer happened to be trying some crazy stuff… ;-)

  • DoctorOverlord

I wasn’t thinking about playing an asura either until I saw their animation.   Then the little guys just charmed me into wanting to create a character of one :)

  • http://www.kaiketsu.enjin.com/ Corey “Crimzen”

I can see myself, playing RC golems for hours and hours, and forgetting about that guild dungeon run.
    .”ya….about that…”

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/D5X7X6S6ERDQDZFNDO4TUKDBHQ Peter

I am so looking forward to play with asura X3
got the key for gw2 a while ago at mmoga and was hoping to play in the first beta weekends~
