GW2 Players Report Phishing Scams And Hacked Accounts

Yesterday, the ArenaNet support team made a post on Reddit regarding bans for inappropriate names and conduct and at the same time ended up confirming for several players that their accounts had been hacked. Those replying to questions on Reddit advised players to contact Support for further assistance.

At the same time, other players have reported receiving emails from ArenaNet alerting them that someone had requested a password change. Others have received obvious phishing emails asking for account information.

Whether or not some of the hacked accounts were made possible by players actually replying to these emails and handing over the information themselves has yet to be confirmed. However, I’d like to take the opportunity to remind everyone to NEVER reply to these emails. No video game company will ever ask you for your password. They have no reason to.

And, if your account has been hacked or you’ve received emails asking for your details let us know. Also feel free to let us know what precautions you take to protect your gaming accounts.

In the last 2 days I have had e-mails regarding 2 password reset requests that I did not ask for. I am really concerned about how quickly this has started happening and although I have a very strong password, the fact that they could access my paypal account from within the game concerns me greatly. I would love to hear some word on an authenticator for GW2 very soon just to put my mind at ease.

Yup – got my “Password Change Request” e-mail the other day. Good thing I don’t even play GW2, so no worries there. It didn’t look like the typical phishing attempt (no links), but it just cements the fact that it’s pretty stupid to launch a game in this day an age without an authenticator.

(My spam folder is always getting a few emails asking me about password resets for my battle net account….and I don’t even have a battle net account.)         They don’t necessarily have their emails, that’s why it’s vital you do NOT respond. How do you get junk email (even if it’s only 1 or 2 a year) when it’s an email address only used to talk to family? Easy, there are programs that mass email using common names, terms, you name it. It’s blind emailing and they don’t know if it made it to a person or not, they’re just hoping for a reply. That’s why it’s called phishing (fishing), you’re hoping for a nibble.

There’s actually a little more fault on ANet’s part due to them using our e-mail in the first place. For GW and the majority of the GW2 betas/stress tests, we were using the internal e-mail that NCSoft gave us. Now that they switched to our real e-mail, Bam, issues.

        Ever use that email for something else? As I’m sure you noticed you log in with your email, not your user name. So it really isn’t that hard to imagine someone, or rather their computer, just randomly throwing emails at the log in screen until they find one that hits, then target that person to steal the password that goes with it.
        
        I get emails all the time from people trying to hack my battle net account, that I don’t have, and yet have not gotten a single email for my GW2 account. I can only assume this is because my primary email is more or less all over the place, but I use a different email for GW2, and ONLY GW2.

    I’m sorry, but if you got this soliciation email it’s because you’re using your account email for more than just guild wars 2 and consequently paying the price of having this email out in multiple areas. Any smart online user has a general email, a personal email, and a billing/secure email to separate occurences like this out. If your email is ONLY used for GW2 and you literally receive no other emails then fine, you can rule it as a “hack” on Anet, but I doubt you can declare that. Consequently, users like myself who take it upon themselves to protect their information and use emails appropriately have had no issues.

    Ok, maybe the “tech-darwinism” is a bit too harsh. What I’m trying to say is you have used too simple of a password (brute force hacks of passwords take less and less time as computers get more powerful) and/or used an email address for an account that you also use for any site that requests an email to sign you up for this or that, or used the same email and password that you use on a forum site that has gotten hacked and had user information stolen.
    
    I’m certain you’re intelligent enough to take good safety precautions to ensure you’re money isn’t stolen from you. I’m trying to say you must be just as vigilant (if not more so) when it comes to your online assets.

  Considering that the GW2 community had been getting such emails literally for over a year I’d say there was no reason not to. First it was beta scams and now it is for the actual game.

Before they took it down, the password reset page leaked information about valid emails. Enter an email and you get a success or failure message. Botnets/scripts could submit millions of random email addresses to this page (john1 at gmail, john2 at gmail, etc.) or email addresses from other site leaks and find out which ones belong to valid users.

Even now, their main login page is still leaking emails. It gives an “invalid email” or “invalid password” message when it should just say “invalid login” or something.

Anyway, armed with a list of valid emails, the hackers can now send out thousands of phishing emails and only need a tiny percentage of users to fall for it.

Also from comments on reddit they appear to not have a lockout on login attempts, so with their list of emails these same scripts can now brute-force simple passwords just by trying lots of combinations and get some logins even without phishing.

Plus no authenticator option.

Lots of Basic Security 101 failures on the part of ArenaNet here, quite unfortunate.

  Did you use the same e-mail and / or password on some website?
  
  If not, it’s likely that you weren’t “hacked”, and your account is simply suspended because a) you didn’t enter your retail code to replace your pre-purchase code, b) you didn’t confirm your e-mail when Arena Net enabled e-mail confirmation or c) you logged in from some unusual location, Arena Net’s systems flagged your account as “possibly hacked” and decided to suspend it.
  
  If you did use the same e-mail address and / or password on some 3rd party site, someone might indeed have managed to get your password.
  
  Also, note that clicking on a phishing e-mail link won’t magically give them your password. It will just take you to a (fake) site that tried to get you to type your password into some form.
  
  The only kind of e-mail where the link is “immediately” dangerous are address change / password change _confirmation_ e-mails from Arena Net. That means someone requested a password change in your name, and if you click you’re basically saying “yes, it was me”, so the server goes ahead and changes the password.

I did receive one of those emails but NEVER clicked the link. Now I can’t log into the game like many others. I have tried for over 10 hours to get support to contact me about this but all I have managed to do is get a form email that did NOT address or correct the issue. All I get is the game telling me it doesn’t recognize my email and my password is wrong. And of course….there is NO phone number for customer support.

Look, I love ArenaNet and I firmly believe that GW2 is the best MMO available by far but I have to say that I was shocked when I first learned that there would be no authenticator available at launch.

For goodness sake everyone, if you buy from the GEM store (which I have since I HAD to have the pirate outfit), DO NOT allow it to save your credit card information even if an authenticator becomes available.

  I didn’t try it but I would hope that it doesn’t actually save your CC number; just the name and address (and possibly the first 4 and / or last 4 digits of the number). The middle 8 digits and (especially) the 3-digit security code are generally not saved (that’s the policy recommended by CC companies – although some sites ignore that because they want to offer “1-click purchases”).
  
  Also, I’m pretty sure GW2 checks where you’re logging in from, and will ask for e-mail confirmation if you log in from a “new” location. They do that for the game itself, so I’d hope they check it again (separately) for the gem store. That’s what I’d do, anyway.
  
  If all else fails, Arena Net should be able to track the transactions and return your money, if your account gets hacked (they’re just selling virtual goods, so they don’t actually lose any money by refunding you), but obviously that can take some time, so it’s best avoided.

  It gets harder every year to spot phishing attempts. I work in the business and have seen security gurus who have fought against this very thing fall for well crafted attempts. True part of the onus is on the user to educate oneself and act in a responsible manner as much as possible but no protection is 100% full proof. That is the nature of the age we live in, so the rest of the onus lies with the company.

  That said, if I may offer a suggestion, once everything is fixed change your account email to a new one, something created only for GW2. Arena Net has confirmed that these emails didn’t come from a database hack, but were gained from outside the game; so if you have an email only used for the game, as I do, the hackers can’t find you.

I have three unique e-mail addresses registered with Arena Net, NCsoft and the GW2 website (plus a different one I use for logging into the game), and didn’t receive phishing e-mails on any of them, so I think it’s safe to say the e-maisl aren’t coming from someone with access to the actual user databases. They’re probablly just trying e-mails harvested from GW2Guru and similar sites (just as most WoW phishing attempts use e-mails obrained from Curse, Elitist Jerks and Wowhead).

However, Arena Net really needs to learn a thing or two about privacy and security.

Currently, anyone who adds one of your characters to his or her friends list (which can be done without your permission) can see your account’s display name and can check which characters you’re playing and when.

And the forum pages show your e-mail address (the one used to log into the game) in huge letters, so if you ever check the forum in public (ex., on your laptop) anyone passing by can instantly know your e-mail address, your account’s log-in name, your account’s display name and (with a minute amount of effort), the names of your characters.

This still doesn’t reveal your password, of course, but makes it very easy to go through previously hacked databased of other websites looking for an identical e-mail address, and see if any passwords associated with that address have been harvested or cracked.

So, while proper account security should keep everyone safe, Arena Net isn’t exactly helping players (or itself) by making so much information visible.

For a company claiming to “put the RPG back in MMORPG” they seem really eager to go beyond the characters and make everyone’s identity public. Maybe that’s why they seem to treat Facebook as their primary communication channel (not even bothering to send e-mails to registered users or mention the news on their website or the game launcher).

  Today I got a GW2 password change confirmation e-mail… on my Wowhead address.
  
  The most interesting part of that is that it wasn’t a phishing e-mail. It was an actual password change confirmation, sent from Arena Net’s actual mail server, and with a link pointing back to Arena Net’s actual account management.
  
  For an “account” which simply doesn’t exist.
  
  In other words, it looks like Arena Net’s password reset script doesn’t even care if people ask to reset the password for a real account; it will just send out “confirmation” e-mails to any address that people type into the password recovery form.
  
  If so, no wonder their servers are overloaded…

  The only way someone else can change your GW2 password is if the confirmation link in your e-mail is clicked. If you didn’t click it, then whoever hacked your GW2 account knows your e-mail password, and you should probably start by changing that one, or it will happen again…
