Legacy of the Foefire is a structured PvP map. It is a conquest map with three capture points and powerful NPC guards and guild lords as the secondary mechanic.

Two teams are matched up against each other. The objective is to be the first team to reach 500 points. Points are awarded through holding capture points and kills. There are 3 capture points on the map and, when captured, each location grants one point every two seconds. Each player kill grants ten points. If neither team reaches 500 points, the team with the most points will be declared the winner after the 15 minute time limit.

idk, I don’t like PvP Maps with NPC’s on them..
GvG was kind of the exception because the NPC was the main goal – sort of like WvW is now.
But killing NPC’s for a significant score boost in PvP is not for me.
Rather have them give more points for actually downing and killing enemy players

its meant to give more depth in the pvp of this map because of this NPC if dont guard it well and even if ur wining u may lose if he got killed this will be alot of fun and not repetitive scenario of this map

The problem I have with NPC’s in PvP is that there is that element of randomness and luck.
What if one GL times his attacks always wrong making it super easy for the attackers while the other just falls over?
I can understand that they want to freshen it up, but I feel they could have done that without introducing NPC’s.

Also, they said EACH map has it’s OWN little gimmick. This feels like Nifthel re-hash. I don’t really care about PvP in it’s current state, which is weird, since I usually don’t give a damn about PvE but GW2 has converted me and droven me away from PvP.

W/o observer mode I don’t see how interest is going to be big anyhow.
I don’t care if they don’t launch with the features right away, but I think after launch the first thing they need to straighten out is sPvP!

Why don’t they, instead of NPC’s, just put like a little CTF element in there (Orb stealing) or the Flag Stand mechanic from GW1 random arenas is a mystery to me… then again, we haven’t seen all maps yet (at least I hope so..)

        • Old Ben

I hope we’ll see some asymmetric maps, too (thing like Team Fortress’ Dustbowl or Badwater), with two rounds.

Blue base the Guild lord is wide open, but in Red Base there are pillars u can hide, Even thought players get a Alarm seying the base is under atack it usually last alot longer then what it really happends. Guild lord is easy to solo also. Oh yeah in the mist at the east side of the map theres the npcs from all the pvp zones ppl can learn to solo them there.

I don’t see a big issue with some NPCs in PvP matches, as long as its equal numbers.

    • http://twitter.com/QuietNine Quiet

i like them too, but in nifthel, they are pretty terrible. they serve to allow quick turn arounds and fun, close games, but the credit for the kill goes to the killing blow and not those who do the most damage, which really takes a lot of fun out of it.

      • Old Ben

I’m pretty sure everyone who does more than 5% damage should get credit. If that wasn’t working, you should have reported it as a bug.

      • Jay

I think that they should have the same medal system for those 2 bosses. The most contribution gets the buffs… Sniping is a pretty cheap tactic.

If you’ve ever played League of Legends its supposed to function like that essentially where they don’t want players to feel safe going after those extra points whenever they feel like. You really have to think tactically and have a good opening to take one out or else the other team can steal them from you. The same can happen to the other team though if they choose to go for one of those bosses at a poor time. It just adds a little depth to the gameplay and can reward teams for playing better.

Please dont tell me that huge machine gun with a magazine scope and tactical bipod is in the game. So random.

i dont see why an engineer wouldnt be able to make such a weapon lol

In Guild Wars 1 there was an time-travelling April Fool’s Day special event/mission where you meet commandos from the future who are geared up in modern military equipment.     There was even a helicopter sitting by the NPC quest-givers.    The first April 1st mission was a bit tedious but the April 1st mission the following year was very entertaining.

The artwork might have been inspired from that or we might see a similar April Fool’s Day mission in Guild Wars 2.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

It was actually a cross game April Fool’s thing. Commando was supposedly going to be one of the professions in GW2 and what people got to play with in the GW1 event was supposed to be a preview of the profession.

That image along with others was for the Commando reveal. The page for it is actually still up, just not linked.

taugrims blog shows a triple scope rifle as a reward for sPVP, so i think the pic is pretty close. i really hate modern technology in fantasy rpgs. first they give classes pistols and rifles, which opens the door for steampunk. they add engineers as a class, then give them proximity landmines (which generally use magnetic mapping tech to function). next thing you know, asura pop out of the ground and are basically full blown aliens with iron man suites and guided missiles. iron-man migits shooting guided missiles at dragons, wtf. at least the gameplay is amazing.

      • Jay

That whole last part about the iron man suits sounds amazing… =P

      • saluk

Well, technically the Asura popping out of the ground with iron man suits was the first thing of all of those to happen. Fantasy doesn’t have to mean old tyme, and Guild Wars 2 went forward 250 years. For them to not have tech advancements in all that time would be even more silly.

Taugrims gear video showed they earned some epic gear after winning a couple of sPvP tournaments.

Another hit Fony. I forgot to try out the new map last weekend, so it was nice to see a full run down.

guys i got a question i played all betas, but if i run the game on high i have 60 fps but it feels like 30 for some reason. And the game is pretty heavy even though i have a good pc.

    Gtx 470 SC
    intel i7 3770 4.0 ghz
    asrock extreme 4 z77 motherboard
10 gigs of 1600 hrz ram

when i play on ultra i get like 40 fps. but for some reason people with a freaking i5 and a gtx 460 have more fps then i have on ultra.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_INBXCM4CZFVSPC2ZYINQJAK77Y Methadose

Having same problem, just picked up a 7850 and when I play on high in certain area’s like myst I get like 20-30fps but some area’s I will get 50+ fps. With the 7850 I think I should be getting much higher FPS, Guess its not totally optimized yet.

    • Old Ben

If you say that you “have 60 fps but it feels like 30″, the most obvious cause would be vsync enabled. If your system takes 17 miliseconds or more to render each frame, you’ll effectively get 30 fps (even though, with vsync disabled, you’d get 59).

Also, you don’t mention how you (or those “other people”) were measuring the number of frames per second. The game’s built-in FPS meter was disabled in this BWE, so the only way to measure it would be with external software, and some of that software is known to slow down the game.

Finally, unless you are comparing exactly the same zone with exactly the same things visible, there’s no way to reach any conclusion. It could be due to some spell effects, could be due to the number of players on screen, could be due to optimizations in the map geometry itself, etc.. Each of those things can point to different factors.

One big change in this BWE was that they moved most of the occlusion culling (removal of hidden geometry) from the GPU to the CPU. This improved performance on most multi-core systems that were previously thread-bound (i.e., that were only using 1 or 2 cores, while the rest were just sitting there doing nothing) but made performance worse in some systems.

You could go back to the GPU-based culling by starting the game with “gw2.exe -umbra gpu”, as posted by the developers in the forum.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

You mention the “intel i7 3770 4.0 ghz”    Is that overclocked.

Im comparing it to the intel Core™ i7-3770T Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.70 GHz)

I did see some posting that GW2 Beta for the last BWE was CPU bound.
adjusting the core clock speed of the GPU or CPU typically results in lower performance.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000267113773 Joey Benning

my cpu runs at 3.4 and with the boost system at 4.0 wich it does 100% of the time when i play a game.

  • DoctorOverlord

Very nice video!  Please make more of these, they are really nice summaries of PvP maps.

I didn’t get a chance to play this map yet but this video gave me a good grasp of the basics so I won’t be completely clueless when I do play it.

You should do a whole series covering every PvP map (and maybe the WvW maps too).  Consider them like PvP PSAs :)
