ArenaNet Preps Guild Wars 2 For Entry To E-Sports Field
7 Comments

Guild Wars 2 Guru recently landed an interview with ArenaNet‘s Jonathan Sharp and John Carpening to talk about structured PvP. And if you can’t wait for spectator mode to come to Guild Wars 2, well… you’ll have to wait a little longer.

While ArenaNet’s definitely got its eyes on e-sports, it’s going to take a little while longer before all parts are up and functioning. The game has, “the entire time PvP has been in development—as far back as day one, meeting one,” been geared to deliver an e-sports experience, from spectator mode to making the game understandable enough for viewers and broadcasters. And when will ArenaNet be ready to pull the trigger? “When it’s ready,” of course.

At the moment, though, tournaments will be restricted by region, for technical reasons, though ArenaNet does expect to have a different system in place to handle worldwide events. A ranking system is also in the works, to be unveiled… yeah, you know when.

And you thought the waiting would be over on Aug. 28.

GW2 seems way complex for this, unless they really streamline a mode for it, and i am not sure how awesome that would be, but it has potential.

I’m not quite sure what you mean by “complex”, if you are referring to the number of builds, or abilities then maybe I could understand a little, but as far a structured PvP goes, their whole design for that from the start has been to make it consistent and simple so that people watching it have something simple to look at to see who is winning.

On every map you have 3 points to take and it’s first to 500 wins.  I know that there are secondary things you can do on each map, like killing the Keep Lord etc.  But this core mechanic of 3 Points and first to 500 is the basis of every single map specifically for the reason of making it simple.

      Not complex at all

Guild Wars has the most interesting PvP of all MMOs out there, so I think it will be quite successful :) World of Warcraft Arenas is based on Guild Wars PvP, for those of you who didn’t know.

I think out of all the MMO’s out there Guild Wars could be the one to pull this off if Anet markets it right as well as put those core features in place like spectator mode. I hope the community gets behind this though, would be awesome for it to become an E-sport

i would say its more than possible to do it like he said GW1 PvP system is amazing and GW2 PvP is equally amazing

To be viable as an eSport the main problem is “viewability” and NOT the competitiveness of the game. The “arena” and the “action” should be pleasing to watch.

Thus it should NOT be “too fast to follow” and as an MMO that is problematic. Since the skills have quite a few seconds of cooldown each there is the chance to do it though. The effects need good visualization, but with a spectator mode they should think about FULL GRAPHICS for this to have the full beauty of fireballs or a powerful swing with a weapon.

As for the arena it should be easy to understand the objective of the map and it should be pleasing to watch. Thus some “barren pit” might not be good to watch as would a rather big map. What *could work* is a non-live version of non-small maps, where you edit the action from a replay (kinda like a LoL analysis) and could look at a situation from different angles. That would require LOTS of work and might be too much to be profitable.
