Guild Wars 2's Elementalist In The Spotlight

Here’s the first in a planned series of eight articles highlighting our favorite features about the eight professions in Guild Wars 2.

Our goal is for them to be informative, entertaining, and to briefly showcase the variety in the game’s professions.

All right, enough boring preamble, time to start burning things! Here’s what I thought of the elementalist in the recent beta weekends:

Versatility

Other classes can switch two weapon sets in combat, but the elementalist can switch his elemental attunements, to earth, air, fire, or water. This means that, at any time, he has 20 weapon skills available, double the number available to other classes.

Of course, you can switch out of combat, as well, giving you even more options.

All the variety supports a number of different playstyles, usually within a single weapon set. Fire tends to do the best AoE damage, air/lightning is good for single-target DPS, water is best for support/healing, and earth is a primarily defensive element. Every elementalist has all of these available, no matter what weapon he has equipped.

Naturally, it takes a while to unlock all of those — hey, there’s got to be some mild downside — but since the elementalist has relatively few weapons overall, I had all of them available by the time I reached level 20.

Staff power

That being said, many players insist that the staff is the best weapon for the elementalist. With the greatest range of all ele weapons (1200) and a solid mix of skills across all four attunements, it’s definitely the weapon of choice in WvW, and you might find yourself leaning toward it in other situations too.

In WvW, the combination of range and firepower makes the staff a must-have. You can rack up a lot of damage from the top walls of a keep by raining down multiple fire AoE skills on tightly-packed enemies and quickly shift to a water attunement if the battle’s going poorly for your teammates.

The fourth and fifth air skills are also not to be overlooked. Windborne Speed grants you and your nearby allies swiftness, while Static Field creates a stunning ball of lightning. I can’t tell you how many players have tried to escape me and my comrades only to fall prey to this vicious one-two punch.

Weapons for you and me

Finally, it’s questionable as to how good the “weapon creation” utility skills — Conjure Earth Shield, Conjure Flame Axe, Conjure Frost Bow, and Conjure Lightning Hammer — are.

But darn if it isn’t fun to throw something shiny on the ground and watch other people pick it up and use it! It warms my heart to know that I’m fulfilling some poor guardian or ranger’s dream of being an elementalist. They all secretly want to, you know…[Editor's note: My guardian is very happy as he is thank you very much!]

No, he’s just in fire attunement.

    Warrior weapon swap power

  • http://twitter.com/coreyctom Corey

yea I focused on my elementalist this past BWE and I was one of the ones tagging along with Mike on his Saturday dubvdub spree (gave you bow several times, but I don’t get a mention! lol jk)  I really enjoyed the class but I did often find myself still wishing I could weapon swap (especially from staff to dagger off-hand).  I imagine Ele will be my main once GW2 launches, with probably Guardian being a close second, though I still wanna also try out Engineer more.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

lol, I was the Charr Elementalist dropping Ice Bows as well for MikeB.

Starting to think, I may have different Mains for the different aspects of GW2.  For WvW, I really enjoyed my Charr Elementalist with staff for the amazing amount of AOE damage.

For sPVP, I really like what Ed Park is writing about the run and gun Warrior.  Looks like a great build for structured PVP.

Really hoping the Asura Guardian with Greatsword will be a fun play in PVE.  Should have some great visuals.

  • Brosaxon

I thought Elementalist was gonna be my main so I spent most of BWE1 as an ele and got him to 23, as fun as that was I found it wasn’t what I was looking for.

On the stress test I made a Necromancer and I was having a blast with it, by the end of BWE2 I had got him to 35.

Now I’m certain my main will be a necro once the game releases.

    • Old Ben

At least until you try another class… ;-)

      • Brosaxon

True, I might end up walking the Scott Hawkes path and become a Guardian junkie.

lol, with WoW 5.0 Shaman lose the hassle of dropping totems and Warriors gain the hassle of dropping banners.

they really need a weapon switch in the hero tab, then i dont sell my other weapons by accident and i can switch over easily for different abilities.
im not saying weapon switch like the rest, just a switch in the hero tab for out of combat switching

    • Old Ben

You’d still be able to sell your weapons by accident, though (you can’t equip _every_ weapon at the same time).

You can simply put the things you don’t want to sell into a “safe box” instead of a “bag”. As long as the items are in a “safe box” they won’t show up when selling to vendors.

Memories of summoning the axe & bow then watching folk confused as to what the “loot” came from :D

You guys missed out how the race effects the elementalist – From earlier videos im aware that your race will effect how your class is played.
If you get chance to go inot this in more depth please do

    • Old Ben

The only thing your race affects is your racial elite skills.

      P.S. – http://web.ku.edu/~edit/affect.html

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1788280827 Liam Gallivan

Race has no affect on stats, and it only gives you a few racial abilities you can choose to take instead of your normal ultility skills/elite skill. Racial abilities aren’t allowed at all in sPvP so it doesn’t affect balance for that, and they were designed to be significantly weaker than your normal abilities so you only use them if your looking for a fun ability to use in WvW or PvE

  • http://www.facebook.com/LostLunE James Hernandez

your headphones are crooked mike !

  • http://www.facebook.com/mert.matthews.3 Mert Matthews

Did people who wrote this article played only with staff becuse yes staff is indeed a viable option in sPvP and WvW but you should also add with 2 more popular combinations the play style changes drastically while you can go around stacking conditions with scepter/dagger with dagger dagger you become mid-close range nightmare with the ability to build vulnurability and fire burst combo which creates even more versatility and its burst damage is only rivaled by burst warrior so i think article should included play styles of other weapon combinaitons too – Frustrated D/D arcane fire elementalist

Top reason to play an elementalist?

    Everyone else is! :D

    • Jay

lol IKR… way too many people play Eles as it is.

I loved the icebow as well, some giant worm got his scaly ass frozen throughout a good portion of the fight due to the smart use of that bow, it made a struggling situation suddenly quite easy.

Jason needs a better mic. *pop* *crackle*

  • Kicknpups

I played Element to level 39 and have to say it’s a fun class but has major problems.
1)Earth is useless no matter staff/dagger/wand/focus
2)Defense is useless as Element granted as fire dmg is nice and you can do minimal healing but once again the only time I found earth useless was with scepter/dagger and skin#5 on bar in which you took no dmg at all for about 3-4s.

Best overall set up weapon wise for me was Wand/dagger for PvP and PvE. I went into fire/air spec it was OP! I would ride the lighting use my explode use two instant attacks that would hit for 3-4k then switch to fire drop phoenix and aoe fire ring and just kite idiots all day in it while it burns them for massive dmg.

As far as weapons Jason you seem to have no idea what they are meant for. I.E running dungeons there were times when our non range I.E Guardian/War/Thief were limited to melee I would drop bow.Shield was a life saver in Ascalon if you were about to die pick it up and press 5 you take No dmg for about 5-7s.The flame axe seemed useless. The lighting hammer is just OP..SOOOO OP! I would just throw it down and thrash mobs with launched then knock back then knockdown then aoe lighting…So much fun!

I’m however still on the fence between Element or Eng they both seem decent dmg dealer but Engineer needs some major weapon love. Turrets are great same with grenade bag/mine bag etc. But it seems to lag the luster of multi weapons.

I love when someone lays down that flaming great sword for my thief. Suddenly Samurai!

If you think Staff is viable in Spvp for dmg you’re doing it wrong.

  • Mara Gossep

LOL, someone (whoever talks in this video) really needs to cut back on their caffeine intake.

  • Jado Cast

I tried ele first, and while it was fun, the Necro was more my style as a squishy class.  I’ve tried them all now and for my personal play style, I prefer Necro, Engie, Thief in that order.  I thought the ele, mesmer, and warrior were okay but not really my style although I’m going to try warrior again as they do more “range” vs “melee” balancing.  Sorry Scott, but I can’t stand the Guardian or the ranger.

  • Jado Cast

Maybe its just me, but it feels like the movement is more fluid with Human vs Norn and Charr.  I feel “clumsy” and slow with the Charr especially.  It could just be all in my mind but the movement just feels different to me.

    • Old Ben

All characters move at the same speed (barring speed buffs), so larger models will appear to be slower. The asura will probably “feel” like the fastest race.

Top 3 reasons NOT to play an elementalist (at the moment):

    1. Sure you get all the attunement swaps with different abilities, BUT one weapon set only has skills of one style for all attunements. So you cant have “melee and ranged” skills but rather have “all melee-ish”, “all mid range single target-ish” or “mostly long range AoE-ish” skills. There is less flexibility in the class.

    2. The trait system revamp really screwed elementalists over because they are the class which practically REQUIRES you to use all of your attunements. There are a lot of “on attunement effects” and different boons/conditions are spread among the attunements anyways. So you kinda “had to” make a build for all attunements and would lose too much from being “a fire mage”. Right now we have to wait for a trait revamp from Arenanet.

    3. Learning skills for your weapons … YUCK … especially (underwater-)water skills with their low damage potential. You basically have to go back to the starting area to train them simply because there are sooo many and you cant really kill stuff with the #1 skill in an attunement only. Since only the killing blow gives advancement for learning weapon skills you are basically screwed. At level 24 my elementalist was still missing about two of the five underwater skills in each attunement. Arenanet: Please fix the rules for learning skills to something sensible (damage based and not kill based).

I really love the class, but I wish there was the option to be a true support character with good boon supply. As it stands now the durations of the boons granted to allies is just negligible and thus useless. Healing skills dont really do that much either, so a support option isnt really there.
