ArenaNet’s Leah Rivera has published a blog post giving us new details about guild missions which will be added to Guild Wars 2 next week during the February game update.

The goal of guild missions is to give guild members a reason (besides WvW) to play together. Guild merits are also being added as a reward system along with an expanded unlock feature, which will add a sense of progression. These systems will lay the ground work for future guild-related content in the future.

Guild missions are researched, unlocked, and spawned by a specific guild, but since the content appears in the open world, other players on your server can join in on the action. This allows even small guilds to participate in missions if they can enlist the help of other players and everyone gets rewarded.

The five different guild missions being added on February 26 are described as follows:

  • Guild Bounty – Your guild is tasked with tracking down and capturing various targets for the Orders. These people are wanted for a variety of reasons and have all sorts of tricks up their sleeves to resist arrest!
  • Guild Trek – Think you know Tyria? Well the Tyrian Explorer’s Society has a challenge for you! Find the list of locations before time runs out.
  • Guild Challenge – These challenges leverage our existing event system but are specifically geared to require multi-group, coordinated play to succeed. So gather your guild and see if you’re up to the challenge!
  • Guild Rush – Test your skills with a mad dash over harrowing terrain, traps, and other hidden dangers. Just remember, there’s safety in numbers!
  • Guild Puzzle – It’s a puzzle and a jumping challenge all in one! This mission type requires multi-group coordination as well as individual jumping skills to get to the treasure at the end.

Everyone gets rewards for participating in a guild mission. Anyone participating in the guild mission will be awarded with personal awards and guild members will receive guild merits. Merits will be used to unlock new guild upgrades such as combo banners, gold find bonuses, reduced waypoint costs, and other missions.

The video released on guild missions shows striking new environments to explore and who wouldn’t hop on the chance to run around with your guild as a chickens in a guild rush? Seems like a win to me.

What do you think about the guild missions coming to Guild Wars 2? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

AHHHH the jumping puzzle part looks like a raid… Shame they will not do raids in gw2

    • Nick Cattane

They said that if people really love this type of content they will add a lot more and may even look to expanding how it functions (i.e. they are hinting at doing raids).

  • Marcel Frohlich

Wow, this looks amazing… Hopefully a raid tier gets worked into this eventually (with a guaranteed exotic drop perhaps? ;)

  • Ian Mansfield

    AMAZING, so love this

  • Bill Lia

    Must…have… guild… jumping… puzzle… NOW!!!

    Looks awesome!!! Can’t wait!

  • DoctorOverlord

I had a chuckle at the chicken race.    I hope there are zone-wide announcements when these kind of things occur since they seem to be intended to bring the guild recognition and attract people to them.

No mention of  being able to add guild colors on armor we saw that in the earlier screenshots. That would be nice to see this patch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/spankthismonkey Thomas Vu

people are already putting guild colors on their armor from what I have seen in game.

      • DoctorOverlord

Sure you could do it with dyes but it would be nice if that was part of the guild rewards so you wouldn’t need to unlock all the needed dyes for all your characters.

I didn’t know about the guild armorsmiths, maybe a reward could be a discount from them (or even a free token).

    • Chris Catone

There’s already a guild armorsmith and weaponsmith with guild-emblemed gear.  They’re not likely going to release much if anything about the reward system until it goes live next week.

Looks great.  But, open world will be a challenge. Here’s a few game design questions:

    1. If this is really popular, what happens when it dumps players into overflow servers.  Will the Guild Mission appear across all overflow servers? Will all the guild members be in the same overflow server.

    2. What happens if multiple guilds do the research and want to spawn the Guild Mission. Do they over-write each other; run at the same time (how does it assign credit); require the Guild Mission to completed or despawn before starting their own mission.

    3. Will this turn into a one time event? If the rewards are permanent, will the guilds only run them once. Will Arenanet have to come up with new rewards for future Guild Missions?

    4. Will this stifle new guilds.  Once all the guilds have the rewards, starting a new vanilla guild might be a problem.

    • Nick Cattane

Really good question regarding the overflow – curious to see how that aspect will work.

Better than what WOW is doing with their guilds atm.  Everyone just doing LFR and dont bother with normal raids cause it has been buffed to fit the “have to play 3 hours at leats 3 nights on set times” to take part.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

QQ normal raiding is too hard.

      • http://twitter.com/Deadalon Deadalon

No – Its QQ that BLIzzard ignored the social aspect of guilds in MOP.  Raids should not be the only thing holding guilds together. Cause right now many guilds dont bother to raid anymore.  GW2 is working on real guild content at least.

        • DoctorOverlord

Not trolling here but what has WoW offered before MoP besides raids to keep guilds together?   Do you mean the larger PvP battlefields?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Scott-Blair/614675377 Daniel Scott Blair

It sounds like not every person in your 10 or 25 man is doing their part in making sure they bring their A game to the fight.  Have no fear nerfs inbound!

      • http://twitter.com/Deadalon Deadalon

It sounds like pretty much that majority of WOW players are doing LFR where no skill is requited.   And without any social bonds and all the hate and bull that goes on there… they will get a very negative image of raiding and never bother with the real one.

My guild has finished raiding this tier.  But I will not be taking part in 5.2 cause of many issues I have with MOP basic and changed systems.  I feel it shows total lack of understanding from Blizzard on how to keep a good solid progression based content flowing.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

    very cool

  • bahl isvet

    This looks rediculously AWSEUM !!!!!

  • http://www.kaiketsu.enjin.com/ Corey “Crimzen” Jenkins

Awesome stuff, looking forward to running these with my guild. I still have a few questions, but most of them are “wait and see” type things. Definitely a good start though for improving some of the guild features in the game.

  • Odeezee

really impressive effort on their part. i was thinking far less involved and grand than what was shown in the video. pleasantly surprised, indeed.
