Chat Bubbles: Have You Played With Atypical Gamers?

In today’s episode of Chat Bubbles, I want to hear about the atypical gamers that you play with in your MMOs. As some of you may know, I used to raid in World of Warcraft with my father. He was one of our main tanks through six years of raiding and helped us defeat almost every boss the game had to offer during that span. Pops—as everyone calls him—played Vanquish, a green-haired night elf warrior and when we stopped raiding a year ago, he had just turned 65 years old. Older gamers aren’t unique, but he is certainly a bit older than your typical gamer.

Another atypical gamer, I played with was a young raider in our guild. We had a mother and son pair who raided with us even though Haladrin was only eight years old. He was exceptionally mature and skillful for his age and he was also a successful tank for us for many years. I always felt it was remarkable having a 50 year age difference between two of our raiding tanks!

I want to hear your stories about people you play MMOs (or other games) with that don’t fit the typical gamer mold. Do you happen to play with your grandparents or some other relative that surprises the rest of your family? Does your priest or other religious official lay out some awesome DPS at night? Does your dungeon party consist of your teachers, doctors, or lawyers? Share your atypical gamer experiences with us in the comments section below!

We played Guild Wars 1 with a mid-fifties grandmother. She was from the midwest, and the only way I can describe her is “adorable”. She had somewhat bad vision, so every once in awhile we’d catch her trying to shoot fireballs through a wall. We’d ask what she was doing, and she’d say something like “Aw shucks, I can’t see too good, I was just clickin’ on the red dots…”

At the time, I think the age range of players we were with was about 18-58, so about a 40 year difference there. It was a great group of people.

We used to raid in wow with a woman of shall we say “advanced” years, she did less dps than my wand at the time (not even exaggerating, we tested it), but she was that lovely we didn’t have the heart to not bring her

When I was leveling my paladin back in vanilla, I met a level 60 paladin who was 83 years old and a grandmother. She took the time out to mentor my newb ass and help whenever she could in game. We eventually started raiding and pvp’ing together which really got me addicted to wow. She hasn’t been on in years now, and I fear the worst. I will never forget her.

Wow!  83 is amazing.  What was her paladin’s name?

I believe it was somewhere along the lines of velanna. Difficult to remember the toon exactly because I was about 12-13 back in vanilla.

Well I am atypical in a few ways. First of all I am 63 years old and this may be a little older than most gamers. Luckily marrying well and retirement has given me the money to game as much as I would like.

And speaking of marrying well - I may be atypical in that I first “met” my wife in a social MMO game. We knew a lot about our common likes / mislikes before we saw pictures of each other. Our first “date” was when I flew cross country to meet her. It was a little tense and awkward at first, but by the end of the first day our imminent marriage was apparent to both of us. To top all this off our whole wedding party was people we met in the same game and most of the guests were too.

I remember a friend who raided with a guy who only had one arm….does that count?

It caused a bunch of guild drama, they were a progressive raid group and he wasn’t putting up good DPS numbers.  My friend and I would talk about it for hours because it concerned my friend so much, on how to tell him the had to switch toons or join one of their friends and family raid groups. I was in a F&F raid group at the time.

Crazy sauce. I hadn’t thought about that in years.
