After six years and a F2P switch that rescued the game from death’s door, Dungeons & Dragons Online is finally getting its first full expansion this June 25. Turbine announced that launch date today for Menace of the Underdark, and DDO players are sure to find lots to like in this content-packed expansion. As a precursor to those events, Turbine is also going live today with the Web of Chaos content update that expands the game into the Forgotten Realms.

Highlights of the expansion include a new level cap: 25 — which comes with epic destinies for those high-level characters; the introduction of the druid class; and three new Forgotten Realms adventure packs. The expansion comes in three editions: a Base Edition for $29.99, a Standard Edition for $49.99, and a Collector’s Edition for $79.99. Bonus items that come with the latter two editions include companions and cosmetics that can be used immediately upon pre-purchase.

As a huge Dungeons and Dragons fan and a DDO player I actually cannot wait for this. It’s actually looking to be a great addition to the game.

Have often wondered if I should try this. Was a fan of D&D right from the Basic Edition, oh so many years ago. Hardly any players I know now even remember it :( .

I am thinking that I will try SWTOR next but don’t expect to sub for it, am pretty much done with Skyrim….. what do you think would this be a good one to tide me over until GW2?

I’m not a huge DDO player, but the thing that struck me the most about it is how many skills it tosses at you at 1st level. It’s sort of like Rift in that regards. It helped that I was familiar with the D&D 3rd Edition rules to help make my character and optimize my choices, but even so it was a bit overwhelming. And it definitely adheres more to those D&D rules than to “MMO rules” — ie, there’s zero regen.

I’ve actually been playing Star Trek Online a bit lately and finding I like it more than I did when I first tried it two years ago. You might give that a shot, too, if you’re looking for something F2P to fill space.

Ah cool, thanks, Jason. I will have a look at them both.
