Let’s Talk Wrathion’s Legendary Quest Chain!!

Wrathion

With patch 5.4 we will finally see an ending to our legendary quest chain, and have ourselves a shiny new legendary cloak!!

How far are you on your legendary quest chain?  Are you completely caught up or almost there?  Did you just start and have a long way to go?  I am so close to being caught up.  My guild took a break for the summer, and I was getting sick of running LFR’s non-stop so I took a break – for most of patch 5.3.

When patch 5.4 hit the PTR I was starting to feel a bit bummed out.  News had surfaced that the legendary cloak would be awarded rather quickly in the new patch.  This is the closest I’ve ever been to seeing a legendary.  I play a retribution paladin, so the last legendary for me was Shadowmourne.  I did get pretty close with that one too; however, back then you needed to complete parts of it in a 25-man group.  My guild only ran 10 man so, I decided that I wanted to catch back up and get my cloak rather early in the patch too.

This required me to obtain the rest of my Secrets of the Emperor – when I took a break I was at 8/20.  Now I’m working on collecting the Titan Runestones.  I have three of them, so I’m looking at several weeks of running the last half of Throne of Thunder.  I am hoping I manage to collect the rest of the runestones before patch 5.4 goes live, but if I don’t I’m not going to worry about it that much.  Patch 5.4 brings a few changes to the legendary quest chain to help speed it along for those just starting.  Warning!!!  Warning!!!  There may be spoilers from here on out!!!

Legendary Quest Chain: What Has Changed And What Stays The Same

A legendary quest chain guide has been posted, so if you are interested in checking out where you are at – or what needs to be done – then check it out.

Chapter I: Trial of the Black Prince still requires you to get to honored with your Black Prince reputation, but you do not need to carry the Trial of the Black Prince quest around to earn it.  Complete your Klaxxi dailies and any Golden Lotus dailies – that haven’t been destroyed – and you’ll be there in no time.

As for the ten sigils of power and ten sigils of wisdom, these items will not only drop from from the tier 14 raids but will also drop in Throne of Thunder and Siege of Orgrimmar.  That may feel like a ridiculous amount of raiding to do a week, but it will be completely worth it.

The Chimera of Fear item from the Fear Itself quest will still only be dropping from the Sha of Fear; however, it’s a 100% drop rate so it’s not really that big of a deal.  It’s getting a sha-touched weapon to drop that is the big pain.

Congratulations, you are now the proud owner of a sha-touched gem!!

Chapter II: Wrathion’s War was the longest part of the quest chain for me, but that’s because I completed it when you needed to earn 6000 valor points.  That was changed a while ago, you only need to acquire 3000 valor points.  If you’re capping your valor points every week then you’re only looking at three weeks to do complete this part of the chain.

You are going to need to get to revered with the Black Prince, which if you do your Landfall dailies that won’t take you too long.  Again, you do not need to have The Prince’s Pursuit quest in your quest log to earn the reputation needed.

Here’s where most of my friends quit.  Now you need to PvP.  Honestly, though, it wasn’t that bad.  You need to win two battlegrounds: Temple of Kotmogu and Silvershard Mines.  I actually had such a blast in these two BG’s that I started running battlegrounds again – something I normally avoid.  It ended up being quick and painless, and probably only took me a half hour to complete.

The next quest, however, took me a lot longer.  A Change of Command requires you to kill Warlord Bloodhilt – as an Alliance – or High Marshall Twinbraid – as a Horde.  These two bosses have had their health reduced back in the spring, but you will still need a group to down him.  After my group continuously wiped on Warlord Bloodhilt, I talked my raid group into making a quick detour before raid time and he went down nice and easy.

Congratulations!!  You can now add an extra socket to your sha-touched weapon!!

Chapter III: Two Princes is where I ended up taking a break.  The beginning of this chapter III requires you to obtain 20 Secrets of the Emperor – as well as 40 trillium bars.  The secrets currently are chance drops off of the Throne of Thunder bosses – 100% off of Lei Shen.  In patch 5.4 you will be able to get secrets off of the first eight bosses in Siege of Orgrimmar, as well.

More reputation is needed, putting you at exalted with the Black Prince.  If you do your Isle of Thunder dailies and kill the rare spawns you won’t need to worry about this part that much.  As with the other reputation quests, you do not need the quest, Need a Champion, in your log to earn the reputation.

world of warcraft mmorpg mmorpg Lets Talk Wrathions Legendary Quest Chain!!The Thunder Forge quest in the quest chain takes you into a single player scenario that is crazy difficult.  By this point in the quest chain, I’m going to assume you know how to play your class properly.  If you’ve somehow managed to AFK your way through the LFR and have found yourself here, you are going to fail.  By the end you are going to need to be constantly aware of your surroundings, and be on your toes to avoid the deadly attacks.

Here’s where I thought I was done.  My server has pretty much given up on farming world bosses.  Naturally, killing Nalak – after throwing a Tempered Lightning Lance into his body – would be the next part of the chain.  Luckily, as soon as I was done in the solo scenario, I came out to find a group starting for Nalak.

Congratulations, at this point Wrathion rewards you with a legendary meta-gem!!

Here’s where I’m at, collecting the twelve Titan Runestones.  These are random drops off of the last six bosses in Throne of Thunder – 100% off of Lei Shen.  With patch 5.4, they will also drop from the first eight bosses in Siege of Orgrimmar.  This is why I said earlier that if I didn’t manage to complete this before 5.4, I wasn’t going to worry too much about it.

Once you’ve collected your runestones, you’re going to need to head back into the Throne of Thunder one last time.  Collect the Heart of the Thunder King from Lei Shen, and bring it back to Wrathion.

Now onto the Celestial Blessings.  This quest requires you to defeat one of four celestials.   Each celestial is designed for a certain role.

Challenge of the Jade Serpent: Range DPS
Challenge of the Red Crane: Healers
Challenge of the White Tiger: Melee DPS
Challenge of the Black Ox: Tanks

Before heading out to complete this, it would be wise to see your August Celestials Quartermaster first and pick up a Celestial Offering.  You will get a blessing – buff – when you are near a celestial’s temple.

Once you’ve completed this stage of the chain, Wrathion will reward you with an epic item level 600 cloak – that can be upgraded twice!!

At this point you can rejoice, as you are all caught up!!

Patch 5.4′s Legendary Chain

world of warcraft mmorpg mmorpg Lets Talk Wrathions Legendary Quest Chain!!Chapter V: Judgement of the Black Prince begins in patch 5.4.  Wrathion will be sending you to the Timeless Isle.  Your first order of business is collecting 5000 timeless coins.  Honestly, timeless coins are everwhere, so this part of the quest shouldn’t take you too long.

Once your coins are collected you will need to defeat four new world bosses, the celestials.  Once defeated, report back to Wrathion and he’ll award you with a Timeless Essence of the Black Dragonflight.  This will turn that ilevel 600 cape of yours into a Legendary version.  A zone wide yell with let everyone know of your triumphs.

Even though you have your legendary, there is still one quest left.  You need to defeat Garrosh Hellscream to complete the chain.

Legendary On Day 1 Of Patch 5.4?

When asked – on the forums if players could get their legendary cloaks on day one that patch 5.4 goes live, our very own Lore had this to say:

Assuming you’re all caught up on the quest, yes! You should be able to get your legendary cloak pretty quickly once Patch 5.4 hits.

The reasoning is simple: we want you to be able to use it for progression. Past legendaries (including the earlier bits of the Mists of Pandaria chain) have typically taken a pretty decent amount of time before you’re able to get them. That’s great for heading into the next tier (or finishing up the current one), but when the next tier is in a new expansion, it can leave them feeling a little… flat. You end up using them mostly for farm, and then you replace them once the next expansion hits and you out level them.

It also feels a little strange thematically. “We need to properly gear you for the fight against the Lich King so uh… go kill the Lich King!” Bit awkward, but required for gameplay purposes. A legendary doesn’t feel terribly legendary if there’s no effort involved in obtaining it.

So, since you’ve been working so closely with Wrathion over the course of the expansion already, it makes sense that he’d want to equip you properly for the final resolution of the Alliance vs Horde conflict — before you set foot in Orgrimmar. And since you’ve put in so much effort up til this point (starting in patch 5.0 and continuing up through patch 5.3), we don’t really need to add more.

We’ve obviously been experimenting a bit with how players earn legendaries in this expansion, so continued feedback (both on how you earn them as well as the actual legendary items themselves) is extremely valuable. Thanks!

There you have it!!  From here on out, you will be set to take on Garrosh in the Siege of Orgimmar.

Are you all caught up on your legendary quest chain or will you need some more time to complete it?

  • Chuchirn

I’m all caught up and I’m just waiting for patch 5.4 to hit live before coming off a break.

  • Dularr

Change of Command/BGs does seem to be a sticking point for many players. The group requirement, phasing, lack of reward, many have already completed the quests.

    Ashley, you are missing the

Celestial Blessings quest, then you will be all caught up.

    • Summer Walker

I have my 608 and I loves it! Bring on Garosh!

    • Ashley Lund

I explain what happened on Galadeon’s post.

  • Galadeon

The end of this article is completely inaccurate. You do the Celestial blessings quest now on Live to get your Epic cape. In 5.4 there are more quests to do before you turn it into a Legendary one. A simple search over on Wowhead can show you the next quests.

    • Ashley Lund

You are correct. Basically what has happened is this: I had written this up and made that big mistake (partly b/c I haven’t done that part of the chain yet). When re-reading through Chapter III and Chapter IV, I had noticed the mistake and fixed it and then carried on with Chapter V. Needless to say, the corrections never saved. I’m fixing it as we speak…. sorry about that.

      • Galadeon

TY for correcting. Get back into WoW and finish your cape! :-)

        • Dularr

Starting to read about the tweaks Blizzard has made to the Celestrial Bessing quest. So many creative mechanics, Blizzard is having to deal with.

I’m just so glad I got mine done early.

    • Dularr

I think you are being a little to harsh. It was clear she was still at the Titan Runestone step of the questline and, I’m guessing, didn’t want to spoil the next step in the questline.

She was just missing her “Red Shirt Factchecker” to review the article before publishing.

      • Ashley Lund

That wasn’t it at all, lol. The article was correct; however, when it went to publish it reverted back to the mistake I made last night. Hilariously enough, when I noticed the mistake I said to myself, “good thing I caught that before it went up.” /sigh….

  • Krymm

Change of Command can be done w/ 2 players (done it with lock/mage) so it’s not bad at all as long as you adhere to the mechanics and dont’t force it (meaning interupts if you’re Horde)

Nalak can ALSO be done with only 2 ppl (I solo’d it however). Nalak doesn’t have to die for quest completion (pet to distract, pop ALL def cd’s) – u just need to survive 20sec which can be done with planning and prep – or one other person’s help.

None of the quest chainline requires premade raids or even groups, just a buddy should be sufficient – do your research (wowhead, google) & you’ll see how quick/easy both are.

    • Ashley Lund

That’s fantastic that you were able to 2 man it – along with others. But when I was doing it we were unable to do Change of Command with 5 players – so 2 manning it wasn’t an option.

When I reached Nalak, I tried several times to solo it – and was unable to (partly b/c I was watching XIV: Reborn at the same time), I was lucky that a Nalak group had formed and joined in.

For these parts of the chain, I was telling people how I went about doing it. You could have just left your post as being how you did it instead of being rude about it.

  • Brian

Btw I submitted that screenie of the breath of yu’lon cloak proc to wow-head. Not even kidding i’ve found myself on SO many different websites after submitting that.

  • Mr Lubbb

curious, if myself and my friend are both on this quest, can we help eachother defeat Wrathion for Celestial blessings?
