LOTRO Mounted Combat First Look

Lord of the Rings Online fans have been asking for mounted combat in their game practically since open beta in 2007.Now, five years later, they’re finally getting their first glimpse of the new mechanic in a developer video from Turbine.

In the video, Community Manager Rick Heaton sits down with Senior Producer Aaron Campbell to discuss some of what players will see in Riders of Rohan. Each character will still fill its designated role — Guardians for tanking, Minstrels for healing, etc. — but will do so in a slightly different fashion.

First, each character will have three stances available: Red Dawn for damage, Rohirrim for defense/healing, and Riddermark for a support/utility role somewhere between the two.

Skills look to be completely different, too — at least to judge by the tiny bit we saw in the video — and there’s a five-pip meter over a mount’s character’s portrait that looks like it might be used to power skills.

As for the skills themselves, Campbell says that you’ll still have skills for doing what you normally do, like generate aggro or heal, but mobility will be key, with more skills targeting an area.

Take a look at the video yourself and tell us what you think! Does mounted combat look good to you?

Well let me put it this way: Mounted combat doesn’t look good enough for me to buy the expansion with real money. I will however be picking it up with TP when it goes live. But this is the first time where an expansion didn’t “wow” me enough to pre-order.

I loved reading Lord of the Rings and the movies were great too, but sadly the game is lacking. I got this when it first came out and I wanted to love it but its just too bland and boring for my taste. I would end up asleep at the keyboard. I was never able to put it together as to what this game needed to appeal to me. Probably lack of real pvp.

I had the same experience. Last year I went back to the game and it is a whole different thing now. They really made it interesting and improved the game alot.

With that said I still can not play it for long because although the main storyline is excellent and I really want to follow it the forced lvl grind in between the story chapters kills it for me.

No offense to Jason but you can’t tell crap from that vid or the other vid they released. No definite claims can be made until players see it in action in Beta. My personal feeling from the vid is that it’s not going to be all that exciting but I’ll give final judgement once I play this new system.

The reasons I never played the game is because of the art and graphics feels so old back then.

The combat gameplay is dull as hell too.
