The first major update for Guild Wars 2 lands today and ArenaNet has released a spooky trailer to whet our appetites.  The Shadow of the Mad King is a special Halloween event that runs in four acts and features the return of Mad King Thorn, who was very popular in the original game.  Act 1 begins late afternoon (Pacific time) today with subsequent acts appearing on October 26, 28, and 31 respectively.  Colin Johanson also teased on the official forums that there will be a special event not to be missed on Sunday, October 28 around mid-day Pacific time.  Make sure you clear out your schedule for what could be a one-time event.

The Black Lion Trading Company will also be stocked with new items including costumes that grant frightening skills, special tonics, and new creepy minis to impress your friends with.  There will also be a free pair of devil horns for anyone who can navigate to the gem store and claim them.  If you’ve been hoarding Black Lion Chests, you may want to open them during the Halloween events because there are six exclusive Halloween-themed weapon skins that are being added to them.  I must have the chainsaw sword!

Check out the events page on the Guild Wars 2 website for more information and get ready to have a spooktacular time.  Will you be playing Guild Wars 2 during the Shadow of the Mad King events?  Tell us what you think in the comments below.

now just need healing, gear progression, and more shit to do!!!

No. No. And what do you think they meant by “content patch?” Seriously we are getting “more shit to do” later today and all this week. People ate through the game’s release content pretty fast, yeah, but that doesn’t mean that is all the content the game will ever have. It is way to early to start complaining about that.

As for the healing thing, no. Class dependencies = bad. Arena Net doesn’t want them, so if you demand a strict healer role go play something else. Finally on gear progression, I’d rather not deal with power creep destroying content. Heck GW2 is designed so that old content stays viable; gear progression always, ALWAYS, leads to the abandonment of older content due to power creep. Those things just don’t go together. Gear progession simply won’t work in GW2 without a massive fundamental redesign of the core gameplay.

Lol, I would have to agree that the GW2 combat and professions are solid and don’t need a major change. While I disagree with your second paragraph, it is very clear Arenanet has their game design decisions and should stick with them.

“now just need healing, gear progression”

Oh gawd, no, please not these.
I fully agree with Jonathan Hornsby.

      Go play WoW.  Problem solved.

Is “more stuff to do” running the same content in an endless progression to get “better” gear?

If “better” means that the gear gives you an insurmountable edge over your opponent (who doesn’t have that gear) then you’re talking about WoW. If “better” means that the gear is very cool looking and is essentially a badge of honor then you’re talking about GW2.In either case there’s plenty of “stuff to do” in either game. Which game you like just depends on what you mean by “better” I suppose.

I do, however, find it “better” that I don’t have to pay a monthly fee. :-)

Considering news started showing up today I would expect a little more details in this article. This kind of news you could have written 3 days ago.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.hornsby.7 Jonathan Hornsby

Fun fact; this trailer was released three days ago (give or take). Gamebreaker has been lagging a bit lately.

Guess, I’m surprised this is being called a content patch. When this event rolls around next year would you really call that another content patch?  While I understand other changes are being made, the bulk seems to be related to an annual event.

Not dumping on you but I believe you CAN call it a content patch. It seems that the event is more then just a few costumes, quests and events. Judging from what Anet has hinted at and from the website that this event is only going to ramp up. Im basing this off of the website having multiple chapters to the event. Also more then likely an encounter with The Mad king.

I would hope that Anet will keep promises and have these events be unique each time around given that the tool set they have allows them to pump out event content quickly. I believe with the last beta weekends closing they said it took them about 12 hours to put together the Hunger Games event. So if every “Holiday” event is unique and to this scale then yes… I would call it a content patch. Just like how Rift would release smaller content patches faster that were only there for a limited time.

Didn’t mean to give you a wall of text :)

ACT I was good, can’t wait to see the rest of them.
