Mandatory Password Change, Dynamic Leveling Changes, And Gem Store Sale!
Back in September ArenaNet founder Mike O’Brien wrote a lengthy blog post regarding account security in Guild Wars 2. He explained how hackers steal accounts, explained best practices for keeping your information secure, and described the various authentication plans that they were employing.
He also revealed that they had blacklisted over 20 million passwords that were being used against their login servers and potentially stolen from other databases. This reduced their hacked account rate from 1.5% to 0.1%. Mr. O’Brien also urged players to change their passwords to something unique to their Guild Wars 2 account and in the future they may force a mandatory password change for those that haven’t.
That day is February 7.
If you are still using a password that was chosen before the password blacklist of September 12, you will need to choose a new password on or before February 7. If you’ve changed your password since September 12, then no action is required.
To be clear, ArenaNet’s databases have NOT been compromised. The mandatory password change is an additional security measure they are taking to fight off hackers.
In other news, Isaiah Cartwright took the time to write up a blog post regarding the new dynamic leveling adjustment that has been implemented into Guild Wars 2 during the Flame & Frost game update.
Basically, high-level characters found low-level content too easy despite their effective level being reduced in those areas. Consequently, ArenaNet had to reduce the rewards to discourage the farming of entry level zones.
Fortunately, they’ve made adjustments so players are scaled down further and are now more fun and better balanced. Even better, the rewards have been increased and it’s now possible to gain level 80 loot in any zone.
