ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2 Server Listings Go Live
29 Comments

ArenaNet announced yesterday the US and EU server names for this upcoming Guild Wars 2
BWE.

If you’re interested in joining the GAMEBREAKER guild on Darkhaven head over to our forums and give a shout out or contact us in-game!

A few things to know:

·         Contact Jarimor or Aaron Shaddoe for invites in-game (check the GAMEBREAKER forums for the password).
·         The GAMEBREAKER guilds names are “Agreeance” and “W A Space,” with another guild probably forming.
·         If you have any trouble getting to Darkhaven, head to the gem store by hitting “O”, collect your gems and do a server transfer (though transfers will be free for the first half of the weekend).
·         The GAMEBREAKER community rules still apply for this event.
·         Since this is a beta event only, chances are post-beta hosts and crew will be playing in their own respective guilds.

Now here’s the expanded list of servers that Darkhaven will be destroying in WvW:

Rolling this week in Darkhaven but Frost Gate speaks to me and no it does not say “Winter is Coming” lol

    • Camzillasmom

That would be a server I would pick too. The name sounds inviting haha

  • pandora005

Funny thing how all those [DE] and [FR] servers have english names … makes you feel right at home as a german or french native.

    • Camzillasmom

Don’t forget it’s still beta. I guess they currently have more important things to do than translate server names. I’m sure it’ll be fine on release.

      • pandora005

Oh come on … the sensible thing to do is NOT to “translate the server names” which would get weird sounding ones but rather to come up with interesting names starting in those other languages.

        • Camzillasmom

True when it comes to those weird manuals. But there is still a big part of French and German speaking people that don’t understand english. E.g. big companies like Volkswagen or Mercedes Benz introduced adverts in english Slogans like “Do it your way” in german speaking countries. In the end they figured out that most of the people don’t understand the slogan! So the add was kinda useless.
Also if they can’t pronounce english words properly they might feel uncomfortable. I have someone in my german speaking guild (on Teamspeak) who can’t even pronounce “Guild Wars” properly (there it starts already) and every time he does, a shiver is going down my neck. But most of the other Guildies either giggle or don’t mind because they don’t understand / speak english.

          • pandora005

Personally I hate it when our german companies “have to” write everything in english just to be “modern” at any cost. It is really ridiculous IMO.

On the other hand I can only describe how I perfected my english and that was at the age of 16-18 by extensive reading … of the AD&D 1st edition Players Handbook (yes, that was quite some time ago …) and by watching some english TV (which was available at the time). Try making one of the kids these days read a book without pictures in it these days and you have an uphill battle ahead of you most of the time.

One of the most ridiculous adaptations of “foreign language” happened when a cheese manufacturer renamed the french “Bressot” cheese into “Bresso” … simply because the stupid germans didnt know how to pronounce it correctly (because the “t” at the end is a silent letter). That was 1982 or so.

The sensible thing would be using the same name (either translated or not) as the in game display since these are all names of places in the game world.

        • Old Ben

That’s kind of what “translating” means if you’re a proper translator. A friend of mine who translates mostly comedy shows and books always asks to be credited for “adaptation” rather than “translation”, since he needs to tweak a lot of the jokes.

Most place names in GW2 seem to have decent translations; similar enough to the original to be identifiable but not too literal. Place names that don’t mean anything were generally kept unchanged, which means the result might not sound very French / German, but at least players from different countries will be able to know what the other ones are talking about. And, to be honest, many of those words (ex., “Dzagonur”) don’t sound very “English” to begin with.

I did notice a couple of places where a “semi-English” word was kept unchanged but should probably have been adapted (ex., “Tunwatch”).

  • Camzillasmom

Elona Reach, since my guild is currently there. But I wouldnt mind hopping over to Darkhaven to having a look how you guys are doing :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/John-Alvino/1094406295 John Alvino

    Eternal Grove ftw!

  • ibb27

    “O’Brien’s Refuge” :D I’m going there, Mike O’Brien watch our home! ;-)

  • Jado Cast

    Dark haven is full :-(

    • Old Ben

And I hear about half the population are guardians, all on the same account.

      • Xample

Lol, I heard that the owner of that account spent all his gems to buy more character slots so he could make more Guardians.

        • Jado Cast

          LOL, he wishes.

    • Roblerw

Darkheaven is full, go to tich?

  • Ryan Weckbacher

Deldrimor totally dominated for our sector.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

The match making for WvW seems completely busted this BWE. The server I was on (Crystal Desert) pretty dominated for the whole weekend except for a bit at the start on Friday when it was matched against Darkhaven.

      • Xample

Yeah I play on Crystal Desert too and the last time I checked the WvW status we had like 120,00 point and the other 2 servers hardly got past 10k. And we took over Darkheaven pretty easily after the initial chaos on Friday.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

At one point it was actually 200k/800/500

  • Mathew Edwards

It’s interesting, I was on Kourna and it seemed pretty much even for us. About 20k each for Kodonur, Kourna and Magus Falls. Magus Falls got an advantage for a while but it didn’t last long. There wasn’t really any domination that I saw.

  • Izeyhec (Izaiya Muze)

Darkhaven did ok in wvw but you guys couldnt touch us crystal desert peeps

  • Izeyhec (Izaiya Muze)

Darkhaven does pretty good in WvW but no one can touch us in the crystal desert server
