Chat Bubbles: What Is Your Most Embarassing MMO Mis-Tell?

We’ve all sent an email or a text message to the wrong person. At best, we say “Oops!” and then resend the message to the proper recipient. In some cases, however, this slip up can be mortifying and even damaging. In today’s episode of Chat Bubbles, we want to hear your stories about being on the giving or receiving end of an embarrassing MMO mis-tell.

As I describe in the video above, my worst mis-tell took place in World of Warcraft where as a raid leader, it was my responsibility to coach players and assist in improving their raid performance. Well there was this one raider — who we’ll call Bunnyfluff — that wasn’t performing at an adequate level for our raid group. We tried numerous times to help him improve his damage numbers, but it didn’t help.

One day I was chatting in-game with one of my guild’s officers about Bunnyfluff and I sent him a whisper saying, “I think it’s time we ask Bunnyfluff to give up his raid spot if he can’t improve his damage.” It was Bunnyfluff, however, that responded to the message asking if I had sent it to the wrong person. I was in shock! I stared at my chat window not understanding what had happened. Apparently, while I was chatting with my guild officer, Bunnyfluff had messaged me about something unrelated so when I hit “r” to reply, the message went to exact wrong person.

The good news, it lead to a very productive conversation, but it was definitely an embarrassing way to initiate the discussion. Have you ever been on either end of a terrifying or bewildering MMO mis-tell? Share your stories with us in the comments section below!

I’ve been on each end a few times. Honestly, I don’t even remember specifics, the embarrassment was so great I forced myself to either forget or block it out. Now I NEVER reply, I type out the person’s full name.

I almost had an instance like this. There was a conversation going on about a player’s bad play and that player had whispered me while the conversation was going on, and I whispered a reply that was meant for the other conversation. Luckly, there was nothing too incriminating in what I said. But I was shocked and embarrassed on how close and easy it was for me to have said something horrible about that player to that player.

  It’s written both ways depending on where you go. It’s up to each site to define what is correct in their style guide.

So, most embarrassing tell, it wasn’t sent by me, rather it was sent to me by a friends wife. My friend, his wife, and myself were all playing WoW one night, and then all the sudden I get a tell that was…quite pornographic in nature from the wife that I would later (and quite obviously) meant for her husband. Obviously when I looked over at her and said…
“Uh…(girl’s name) you realize you just sent me that tell right?”
Her face was turned ridiculous shades of red and she couldnt look at me in the face for the rest of the night. It was quite a long and FILTHY message, which made it all the more funny!

Me and my friends used to have spam wars in World of Warcraft. I used to spam LOBSTERS GO PINCH PINCH!!! and i set it to a macro. One day when my friend logged on and starting spamming me i starting spamming the button, not realizing that i was spamming trade chat instead of him. I had a temp ban for spamming but that was the last time we had a spam war lol.
