The Neverwinter beta weekend is upon us. Prepare to enter the Forgotten Realms

Neverwinter…a name that no doubt stirs the hearts and souls of Dungeon and Dragon fans both far and wide. In your time as a tabletop gamer, or as a video game nerd, you may have ventured into the city with like minded adventurers with similar goals as yourself. Perhaps you entered a little later than everyone else, only to find the city in ruins after the Spellplague. Nerdy lore aside; this weekend, February 8th – 10th, you may be in for a chance on entering the realm for the first time (or once more!) in virtual form, courtesy of Cryptic Studios.

That’s right, as we’ve previously reported this coming weekend, a select few will be privy the sights and sounds that the F2P MMORPG has to offer, as this weekend will mark the first in a string of Neverwinter beta weekend. Alongside the beta announcement, Cryptic have also released the third part in the Siege of Neverwinter cinematic, which can be seen above. Although not a representation of the game, you can’t help but get a little nostalgic of ”the old days” as the undead horde of Lich Queen Valindra march upon the valiant heroes…

Its been a long time coming having been announced in 2010, and we know that fans have been excited, even if there are a few that aren’t too happy with the prices of the pre-order packs, but you can’t please them all, right?

For those that are lucky enough to make it into this limited beta period, here’s details of what you can expect;

Three of Five Signature D&D Classes Before Neverwinter’s Release
o Trickster Rogue – Master of stealth and misdirection, and maneuvers across the battlefield and strikes from the shadows with paired daggers.
o Devoted Cleric – Devout healer, committed to preventing injury, restoring health, and a faith in the divine.
o Guardian Fighter - Courageous and stalwart, superior at defensive maneuvers, and no stranger to hand-to-hand combat.
  • Content up to level 30 – Experience a variety of zones, dungeon delves, and large-scale group events as you adventure through the city of Neverwinter and its surrounding areas in the realm of Faerun, including the Protector’s Enclave, Blacklake District, Tower District, Blackdagger Ruins, and the Neverdeath graveyard.
  • Companions and Mounts – During your journey, don’t forget to pick up your first companion quest at level 16 so you never have to fight alone – and be sure to take on your first mount quest at level 20 so you can ride through town in style.
  • Foundry content – The Foundry, a powerful and easy-to-use adventure creation tool allowing users to create, share, and play user-generated content from the Neverwinter community. For the purpose of Beta Weekend 1, players will have access to dozens of adventures brought to you by players that have been working on them for months.

Of course as always, any fans that want to partake in the Neverwinter beta weekend should head on over to playneverwinter.com for all the details.

Here at GAMEBREAKER, we’ve had some early press access to the beta and we’ll be providing you with our views in the coming days. We’ll be sure to update you on any further news when it becomes available.
Stay tuned!

       Totally different. It’s not snowy.

    • Ravenstorm

Niece of the Lich King? Indeed, how sad, even the dragon reminds of him. Still, it’s zombies and Lich Nieces! wooohooo.

Liches and Dracoliches (undead dragons) existed in D&D long before Blizzard was even a company.

Were it not for Gary Gygax and D&D, WoW may not have ever existed.

      • Ravenstorm

And praise be the Master, Tolkien. May he walk the heavens, eating tasty things and drinking heady drinks, forever.

          H.P. Lovecraft is my hero

I wanted to say it was a Wraith, but I do think its a Lich.

It has a black character in it, you know its good!

So sick and tired of CGI trailers, I want to know what your game has to offer, not what kind of video your team is capable of producing. The majority of these cgi trailers have absolutely nothing to offer in terms of gameplay. Poor form.

Actually, I think it befits the RPG genre. The trailers are too get you hooked into and interested in the lore and world in which the game is set. Gameplay trailers are necessary in addition to cinematic trailers, but they don’t need to come until later (but before the game is released).

If you look around, there are plenty of Neverwinter gameplay videos available on youtube (including some gameplay trailers).

Well then Josh you could always click on the link above to the main website. There they have many videos of ingame playing. Three class vids all in game, a few dungeons, one zone and a 2 hour long video of Bill Murphy play a cleric.

  • Ravenstorm

Why are there only 4 heroes and a handfull of soldiers to protect such a big city? Did I miss something?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Bergevin-Jr/1393526370 Jim Bergevin Jr

It’s the staple of the RPG genre. One to eight heroes fighting against impossible odds. I’ve been doing it since 1981.

      • Ravenstorm

hehe. Ofcourse. What was I thinking. *forehead slap*

        • John Doe

what chance does a horde of undead stand against more then 8 heroes ……. the fight would end before they start marching twords your castle.

If you follow the lead-in stories written by R A Salvatore, Neverwinter was destroyed when the forces of Thay released an ancient primordial of fire who caused a volcanic eruption that decimated the surrounding area. This allowed the Thayans to create a Dread Ring that they use for creating undead minions.

Several years have gone by and people are just now starting to rebuild and inhabit the once great city. That is why there are so few defenders to combat the undead hordes.

If you are interested in reading the books that are shaping the story of the game, they are:

      Gauntlygrym
      Neverwinter
      Charon’s Claw

There will be a fourth book coming out in march. All are written by R A Salvatore and feature Drizzt Do’Urden as the main protagonist.

      • Ravenstorm

Tx for the info! Shall look into those.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Traditional story, the large standing army is away helping a neighboring kingdom, while the homeguard is wiped out by the first wave of undead incorporeals. Our band of heroes arrive just in time to defend the city until the return of the king.

  • Joseph Gabrielli

When they swing their swords all you hear is the sound of wind. Its like they aren’t even hitting each other.
