4e = fail
Eberron = fail (golems as a race, really?)
DDO = great adaptation of the 3e rules to an MMO, but it still has its bad parts of being Eberron … (and finally seems to go to FR with the expansion)

Oh crap, Aribeth went crazy again? The city gets what it deserves, but seriously, let that story rest.

I have to echo some of the other comments here, 4th ed blech. Eberron was a fan contest winner and while DDO made me like it well enough, Forgotten Realms is always my beloved setting.

This game got me so freaking excited until I found out they are using 4th edition rules… FAIL!

This is also the answer to “why are they making this if we have DDO”. Different rules editions will make both games play completly different. Also DDO is set in Eberron and Neverwinter is set in Forgotten Realms, 2 different settings.

Well you are right in the sense you mean, I am just saying this wasn’t always the case. The last two years MMOs have done well ad advertising their launch without a doubt. Start talking about years before that, not really. Read how many MMOs exist currently, at least when I last checked there was a list in the hundreds, I never even heard of 85% of them. Never even heard about games like DCUO until they went F2P, Vindictus I only came across because I was having idle time in a class at school and clicked or misclicked it just to read about it while I was bored, then I was actually surprised by the game.

Even so games like RIFT, SWTOR, WoW do decent followup methods of communicating to past players changes via emails, or keeping active marketing after launch, other games just cut it all, shrivel up and die (because they cut marketing and gain no new players after the game ages, even if just by a year or two). This year though is going to be covered in so much hype, seriously, like we are going to have 8+ MMO releases this year? With nothing coming out in the first quarter, I just don’t want to see a possibly great game ever get buried behind others.

Could you give any examples of decent MMOs doing badly because of a lack of marketing? I can’t think of any.

In fact, marketing is usually an area that has a great deal of resources devoted to it. Regardless of the quality of the MMO.

Depending on how silent they chose to keep about the game would depend when it comes out. I haven’t heard anything of a beta but really you would expect 3-4 months time with a beta to be announced or public for the game as a minimum for any decent MMO release. So it could be feasible, likely some Nov/Dec release even if beta doesn’t start for another 4 months. Just seems weird they wouldn’t give any hype to it in advance.

MMOs usually require a community and to get a decent community its launch and follow up has to have a good impression and actually be noticed. I just hate decent MMOs falling aside due to lack of marketing presence.

Given Cryptic’s history, I see no reason to be optimistic about Neverwinter, despite my great enjoyment of the BioWare game.

What they did to Star Trek was just wrong. I see no reason to think they will treat this IP any better.
