EU Fans Protest Removal Of Blood Slider From TERA To Keep 12+ Rating

After all the fuss about the risque depiction of characters in TERA, it really wasn’t a surprise to me to see something about EU TERA fans filing a petition against censorship of the game.

I really have to be honest, though. I would  not have expected this reason.

Now, let me say, I do understand that the US and EU have different standards on what makes a game have a certain rating.  However, I also know that most games seem to have almost equal ratings when the two are compared.

So it’s a bit confusing that a petition about censoring the blood in the game needs to be filed because Frogster is trying to keep the game PEGI 12+. According to a post on the TERA EU forum, lead CM Raven told fans that the blood level slider had been removed from the game in the latest build. Raven’s explanation was that this was necessary because changes in the latest update for TERA increased the amount of blood on some details and that they either had to remove the slider or change the rating.

Raven also stated that because boxes for the game were already being produced and they pre-sold copies with the 12+ rating, they had no other choice than to make the change.

EU Fans Protest Removal Of Blood Slider From TERA To Keep 12+ Rating

Blood Slider shall be the name of my next band.
It’s music will be for kids 12 and under, because in the music business,
    12 is the new 20.

  • Michael Harrison

This is kind of ridiculous.  Tera isn’t made for children, plain and simple. It’s like 4kids getting the One Piece anime; gutting the adult stuff to sell it to the wrong intended audience.

MMOs aren’t kid friendly in the first place anyway; especially in a game intended for adults in the first place.

    • http://twitter.com/FenderSaxbey Randall Burt

While I think there are many kid-friendly MMO’s, it does stretch credulity that even a cursory glance at TERA would make anyone think that its one of them. Though, as Q said, many parents still don’t understand video games or pay any attention to what their kids do, much less play.

This idea is bad and they should feel bad.

  • http://twitter.com/FenderSaxbey Randall Burt

I don’t think I’d let my kids play this game. Hint: not because of boobs and blood.

    • http://twitter.com/DaPhoolz Rp TheFoolz

me neither, I had a few games in mind that i would get for my kids, if i have any. but TERA is not in that.

  • http://twitter.com/Sanovah Nick

Yeah EU TERA will die and they’ll all come over to NA. I really want to know how they can even launch TERA and all its “assets” with a  PEGI-12. If they were doing the same thing here it would be I beleive an E10 and according to ESRB board E10 means the following “Titles rated E10+ (Everyone 10 and older) have
content that may be suitable for ages 10 and older. Titles in this
category may contain more cartoon, fantasy or mild violence, mild
language and/or minimal suggestive themes.” Pretty sure boobs boobs and more boobs isnt E10 or PEGI-12.

Also to mike on the looking to Korea for future content. While EU obv wont because of the PEGI-12 rating NA should because So far aside from the Elin all changes have been to “westernize” the content. So aside from very MINIMAL changes we can expect a carbon copy of any content Korea has

  • delVino

As an MMO player in general this is an outrage. As others have said this is a game intended for adults. On top of that it’s a paid subscription. How many parents would pay for a monthly fee for their children to play one game while they could be playing an untold number of F2P MMOs?

  • lee long

just blood?? what about the almost naked characters?i dont want to see a 12 years old doing something under the table.

    • http://twitter.com/DaPhoolz Rp TheFoolz

and i don’t think they want to be seen unless…

  • http://twitter.com/Philotoby Toby Müller-Brodmann

Mike, I think you got something mixed up:
The flak the USA is getting for being hypocritical concerning videogames is that (for example) “The Witcher 2″ would get an M (17+) rating for nudity and sexual content, rather then for the viceral and graphic violence. Games that would be 18+ or even completely censored (as in, indexed and never released) for violence here in Germany are most often rated M to T in the US. At the same time, though, the Puzzle-Game (!) Catherine is rated 16+ in Germany, and M in the US.

tl:dr: The hypocrisy in the US is that boobs are worse for kids than bullets!

Its all about the complaints. If there is not complaints about the content, there is no problem. That’s why Spanish language radio can be raunchy as they want to be, no one complains.

lol Frogster, thank heavens NA gets En Masse.

  • jayremy

It is really annoying when people are always trying to impose things on people where the is literally a zero party offense taking place (as in nobody is negatively effected). These just being great examples, though I can respect ESRB and PEGI for trying to show games “appropriateness” sometimes it just goes a bit too far in either their ratings for niche things to games or developers reactions to those ratings.

Like in NA I know people are outraged with the Elin change and so on, they pretty much have a right to be being as one thing that has been showcased and allowed in NA beta prior and people really wanting the Tera that is what they have seen in Korea being transferred over. I myself was never interesting in playing any Elins, just like I never roled gnomes in WoW. I can never want me represented by some puny avatar carrying a weapon two times my body over an avatar I can idolize in figure or admire their features(emm, not so much this actually, but I know people do).

All being said I just find it hypocritical, this is an MMO, with the typical and mature MMO crowd, yet trying to filter out more mature content. Elins wearing bikini bottom armor is bad while other races wear… next to no armor is fine. Everybody has their own choice to play this game or not, and even the races to pick. It just ruins it when a stigma gets placed upon anything a select people don’t like so they try to make rules off of their opinions or beliefs.

Elins in general are weird to me a just existing, but if others like them and find it cute or whatever reason, even if it is at worst some weird pedophiliac fetish reason, it is their preference and taste not mine. So what do I care what they like doesn’t affect me, and anybody who is into that “cuteness” it wont matter to me either way. If any parent is going to be allowing children to play an MMO, they are either irresponsible anyways or understand they have a mentally mature child enough to handle it.

My experience with WoW, I had a very mature teenager in our pretty much all adult guild (who later imposed an 18+ rule), who was one of the most mature out of everybody in it. We kept him in and he quit WoW because he wanted better grades and a social life (he wasn’t some AP asian kid either). “The younglins” aren’t incapable of as much as we claim them to be especially at the maturity we choose to stereotype them as. They have a statue showing nipples in the main and mostly nude outfits regardless, kid’s game… not.

just let tera die. i feel bad for tera’s US/EU devs that had to re-do a crap game.

  • Peter Jeaiem

Why go for PEGI 12 as opposed to 16. And how come the PEGI people picked up Bad Language but missed “Game depicts nudity…”

  • http://twitter.com/SeedEve AppleSeed2148

Hey the game have Teddy bears and little girls so it’s PEGI 12 :) I really feel sorry for the players who have been following this game for 3 years to be back stabbed like that.

  • http://openid.anonymity.com/john86 John8

Everyone in the tera-europe forums are adding a CENSORED logo in their own banners. Frogster also denies people to cancel their pre-orders, or just don’t reply them. It’s really a shame. Frogster has lost all their respect.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mick-Rubingh/1218413618 Mick Rubingh

Your argument of it being lower on the shelves isn’t even applicable in most EU countries. Stores here don’t really stash away 16+ o 18+ rated games unless there’s some graphical thing on the box (which hardly ever happens these days anyway).
Also they could’ve made an option on the menu to turn blood on/off, locked with parental control. There’s so many games that have that these days, why not add this into that?

  • ChristopherMitchell1

Soooo I just finished the Manor Dungeon in Tera right before the Open Beta ended. This is just the second dungeon you see in the game and it is a mansion with vampire mobs all up in it. What do vampires do that they are known for? Blood…. BLOOOD and more bloooood. There is a room where there are bloody grinders… a room with a blood fountain… a room where there are POOLS of blood EVERYWHERE! Basically, I feel sorry for EU because all this stuff will get redone I guess and this bloody manor will just turn into a….manor. This game is NOT suitable for 12 years old and I can’t believe a rating group would even think of it… unless they were paid in which case then yes I see why >.>

And to point out what someone in the comments already said…. There is a statue in the main city, Velika, in the center that is of a giant woman from the breasts up… with nipples in full view. She is even wearing armor but that armor ‘discreetly’ covers the outsides of said breasts but not the part where most things get censored. I don’t really understand how they could change so much to get a 12+ rating. Either PEGI was paid off or EUs version is a completely different game.

  • Danielle Istead

What about stickers?!?! It’s a simple solution to a silly argument. A lot of companies do it – some of the boxes have been printed wrongly? Send out stickers to retailers to place on the boxes before they’re sent out.

I’ll probably still be playing for the first free month – then leave like I was originally going to in the first place.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=554907316 Sebastiaan Stalman

What a stupid post seriously they heard something but they dont even know what its really about.

Things changed only the blood on screen MAX blood.

seriously what a noob website noob reporter

The guild icons where because of the Hitler signs ingame is kinda weird on a German server.

And rating US and EU is different by default.

DO ur fcking work if you wanna be a reporter !

I’m afraid you didn’t understand a single thing. And no, they aren’t just changing blood on screen or max blood or whatever. You’re the one who doesn’t even know what’s really going on.

    • Lycronis

Nice “noob” first post. It’s obvious that you don’t have the slightest idea of what you are talking about. Perhaps you should learn to listen and pay attention to what is being said. Since you are apparently a fan of Tera, you should be concerned about this topic and realize how badly this can affect players in the EU (I assume this includes you.) Being disrespectful and insulting is not going to win you any validity.

  • svdk21

Well I’m a Tera player from the Eu and pretty vocal on the Eu board.
A lot of players in the Eu appreciate these type of videos.
The reason why people are angry isn’t just because of the blood is being removed.

The reason people are angry is because of these things.

    - Frogster has stated that the only difference between Eu and US would be the rating.
Nothing would be removed to quote their CM Raven ‘ it’s not like we’re going to remove blood or anything’

As you stated in your video they ‘stealth’ changed this with out even announcing it one week before launch.

    - Germany uses their own rating, basically what ever PG says is not going for them.
Germans are also extreme when it comes to censorship.
From what we’ve gather on the forum Frogster was fully aware that they might had to make some changes to keep their PG 12 in Europe/Germany.

This was 2 months before this happened.
Their CM Anna stated ‘some things could be changed’.
People asked about this and didn’t get any response.

In other words they had enough time to ask for a PG 16.

    - If the game stays PG 12 it will mean any content that is now in game can get censored.
Some blood in an instance or a skull, PG 12 is as you said Lego Star Wars.

Future content might be completely overhauled.
If any special interest group finds let’s say ‘sexy armors’ not PG 12 they could start a fuzz.
    The result is more censors.

    - When pre ordering the digital version of the game you get some extra items.
Nothing fancy like a mount and such, you also have a

People asked if these items would be available to all characters made on that account.
Frogster refused to answer this for months.
At a certain moment some one from their support stated ‘it will only be for one character’

The moment the forum was set on fire, they backed down and stated.
‘ It was a mistake from the support’

So basically no CM or suit could answer this question.
They left it to this random support guy that could chose two answers, and he picked the wrong one.

    -

Frogster has doing nothing about the area chat.
People talking about child porn, racial slurs, holocausts along with people with names like Hitler raging on about what not.

With in the CBT Frogster has done nothing to deal with this.
That some people would use a Swastika or a penis as guild enblem was to be expected.

Instead of dealing with people in game, they just removed the logo’s.
    No Eta on fix.

    -

Frogster advertised an dark game with sexual content and blood.
That’s what I paid for and that’s not what I am getting.

    -

Currently Frogster isn’t answering people about their refund.
They are very slow and seem to hold people off.

It’s not about the few blood splashes.
It’s about censorship and a company that has been treating their customers like dirt.
For me it also plays that a country like Germany get’s to dictate the European censorship for games like this.

In the end this backfired and blew up in their face.
Today we’re suppose to get an answer about this.
As far as I see Eu Tera Fans will just keep going until they either get what they want or made sure Frogster has no reputation left.

    For me it’s simple.
I’m not asking them to change it back I’m demanding.
I didn’t paid 100 Euro for being scammed.
Neither is Tera PG 12 game.

  • svdk21

    Just adding.

Frogster is removing topics if they are put in a bad day light.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Giacomo-Vergante/100000490476853 Giacomo Vergante

Yeah, they closed a lot of threads on their forum about this issue. So silly.

      • Rowan Perera

They closed a lot of repeated threads and merged them into one thread.

        • http://quintlyn.com/ QuintLyn Bowers

Speaking as a community manager. This is something I would do in an effort to keep the forums clean and manageable.   It’s a lot of work for moderators to have to deal with multiple angry threads about the same topic.

Now… If they’re actually closing or deleting all the threads, that’s a whole different story and not something they should do.  Narrowing them all down to one thread or simply closing and placing a link to the thread they want used would suffice.

Or… Just go ahead, make an official thread and sticky it.  Although most companies don’t want to point out any negative feelings people have about them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Giacomo-Vergante/100000490476853 Giacomo Vergante

I’m leaving for NA (I already did, actually, and I have absolutely no problems soloing BAMs with a ping of 140 ms) and I’m currently waiting for Frogster to refund me. Frogster proved itself to be a really bad company, and I’ll make sure to spread the news as much as possible: stay away from Frogster! They don’t deserve your trust, they don’t deserve your cash. They showed a different game during the close beta tests and then they tried to silently sneak heavy censorship patches just 5 days later, when people noticed it during the first day of open beta. Really dirty way of – failing at – doing bussiness. It’s as simple as that. Thet also just recently put a PEGI 12+ logo to their website… totally sneaky, since the community was never informed. And on top of all of that, we still don’t know what changes will actually be made in the future (for the worse, of course, since PEGI 12+ is definitive AND Frogster, despite the many threads on its forums (including one with more than 120k views and 265 pages of replies), NEVER EVER ANSWERED ANY QUESTION OF THE COMMUNITY. They’re simply turning the blind eye, as if any of this could simply disappear by not listening to the many complaints. Such a silly attitude. Bad, bad company. Stay away from Frogster and the game they publish, people! They can’t be trusted.

  • http://openid.anonymity.com/john86 John8

I’m so happy Frogster is getting all the negative attention they deserve! The forums are now burning!
I’ve tried to get a refund for 4 days. The only reply i got was “We apologise (with S) for any inconvenience”. That’s ALL they wrote back! No refund, no answers to my questions.
Everyone who wants a refund, do it now! At least try. On 28th it’s too late, when the EULA is taking effect.

    • http://quintlyn.com/ QuintLyn Bowers

Wait… Could you explain or link something about that last part to me. What does the EULA taking effect have to do with you being able to recieve a refund?  I could understand it being “Once the box ships…” Although I feel like if you returned it unopened you should still be able to get a refund.

      • http://openid.anonymity.com/john86 John86

Hi Q! Everyone who pre-ordered the game are supposed to be allowed to cancel it, before the actual game is released. Even if you have participated in the betas. Pre-release is on april 28th. I find it hard to get a refund after that date.
Try this link, it’s a reply one player got from Frogster citing the EULA: https://forum.tera-europe.com/showthread.php?t=35605&page=3#26
I’ve see several people wanting to cancel, but Frogster support doesn’t grant everyone. Lately it seems they aren’t even answering those tickets at all. Which makes me believe they’re delaying it until the final product is released.

A little perspective on why it’s so important to retain a lower rating: Many shops over here have adopted means to visually seperate 18- and 16- rated games from the rest. This can go as far as using yellow and red tinted plastic cases, to make it absolutely clear for unsuspecting parents that they are about to buy a game for little Timmy that he’s not supposed to have.

So if you’re asking “is retaining a lower rating worth losing a few angry fans on forum?”, the answer is “yes, abso-fucking-lutely!”.

    • http://quintlyn.com/ QuintLyn Bowers

That’s a pretty interesting tactic on the part of the shops.  I’m not certain most parents I’ve seen in US game shops would even notice or care about that difference.  But as I said in the video. I’ve seen parents tell store workers that they don’t care when the worker tried to explain the rating system and why “this game may be too mature for your kid” to them. If Timmy wants that game.. Timmy gets it so he’ll shut up and leave mommy alone for a while.

As for whether or not getting the game in kids hands is worth it.  Maybe for initial sales.  But most 12-16 year old’s are not going to stick with a game for long and parents aren’t going to want to pay a monthly sub for something their kid isn’t really playing.  So the long-term revenue is lost.

Now… There could be factors we don’t know about.  Maybe Gary’s right about the game going F2P very soon and they just want to get their costs recouped before that happens.  But we don’t see EnMasse doing that, which makes me feel like either Frogster doesn’t believe in the product or they just saw it as a way to make a quick profit.

Barring all that.  The major complaint seems less to be about the rating and what they’re doing to keep it than the fact that Frogster told fans this wouldn’t happen, that they were not going to change things.

There is a ton of single player games that are 18+ Way are producers so afraid of launching 18+ MMORPGs? We all know that MMORPG players are older then console gamers anway.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gerry-Watt/100000082909235 Gerry Watt

Pegi18 is actually more akin to the US M rating, Pegi 16 is closer to the US 18 rating. Culture is different in Europe, We smoke at 16, drink at 18 etc. By 18 our *kids* are concidered full adults .. the US seems to like to keep children cocooned longer and does not really recognize them as adults till 21.

I Honestly dont understand the Pegi12 rating, a 16 would have been more inline with the game as like I said, a pegi18 rating is pretty much the EUs “anything goes” rating, more akin to R ratings.

Glad I am playing on US servers tho, sorry Frogster folks, that company suxs arse and always has, why I’m so glad they have nothing to do with anything on the US servers.

    Good Day

I am very dissapointed in Frogster – to be fair I allready was suspicious when it was announced that they would do the publishing of Tera Online in the EU.

Tera was promoted as an Adult (True) Action MMORPG for the last couple of years not only that it was released 1 year ago as an 18+ Game in Korea – for which 18+ Content was produced

Now with the Pegi 12 Rating they not only do have to change the Blood Splatters – I mean did the PEGI people even go up to lvl 26? There are fountains of blood and halls which are covered in blood – I dont get how this got a PEGI 12

In my opinion the company should not be able to chose the rating they want
Its a disservice to most of the People who wanted this Game and seems like a bad and cheap cash in on behalf of BlueHole and EnMass (which actually do a really good job)

What threw me off in the first place was the so called action combat. They missed the most essential part of action combat, the ability to move while attacking. The fact that they are now making changes under the table, just makes me more confident that i made the right chice when i decided not to buy this game.

    Heres my point of view.

It sucks to not have swearing (I like to be able to say anything even if its just stupid).
The Icons I dont care but it sucks.
The blood.. would make the game better I think. More realistic in a sense. More mature I guess. But still I am ok with it.

What I am not ok with is changing content. If i see NA get X and I dont? then fuck this game. And it worries me the amount of time it will take to get new stuff because of all the changes it will need.

So its not about what they already changed, but the future consequences of the changes.

Pegi 12 ? you joking … Just imagine why its rated mature in US ? example human player goes pvp with human player, they both look as humans and gets each other with swords slashing etc even without blood! is it not a violence ? Frogster should’ve thinked what to show to PEGI before ratings etc. but i believe one thing, everything was planned by frogster maybe to get this game to pegi 12 rating cause to make more sales and profit ? now take rage from players who supported this game , HALF of europe i believe was playing in kTera even illegaly and wants same PRODUCT from frogster but they wont get it,that will mean players will go play there where they WILL get it …

EU players are able to buy from En Masse & play on NA servers, there’s no IP blocks or anything. Only issue would be ping. In case that wasn’t clear…

  • http://twitter.com/cosmic_kirby CosmicKirby

I think it’s obvious.  The sexual nature of a lot of the characters would have grabbed the US release an M rating very quickly.  Removing the blood slider and the like is an easy enough decision to draw in a much larger audience in the EU.  There’d be a LOT of work and quick edits (see the Ellin clothing censorship) in the way if they wanted to try and grab a T rating in the States.

  • http://twitter.com/WadeDMcGinnis Wade D McGinnis

Going to say that it is a matter of cultural perspective. We have seen in the past games that are excessively violent do poorly in EU while in the US, sales are normal. (there are exceptions to this in rare occurrences but for the most part, it has been fairly accurate)

Removal of blood spatter is not that big of deal while adjustments to content is low blow to the community that have been basing their expectations off the kTera and usTera beta. We will have to wait and see if sales go above expected numbers.

  • http://twitter.com/Dagus_94 David Gustafsson

I’m going to say this is a bunch of bullshit no one even care about the pegi raiting not even the retailers care about it. a 12 years old kid can go and buy any pegi 18 rated game just like that.
It wont get more sales because of a lower pegi rating.

  • Arkh

They dodged all the important question. And still they are going to keep the 12+ PEGI rating. Basically they DID NOT change anything, everything is still subject to censorship and release will be WHITOUT guild emblem, blood on the floor and blood on the screen. People need to bomb PEGI email.. they dont want to fix this.. we will find a way!!!! NEVER SURRENDER TO CENSORSHIP GUYS!!!

I just read a letter to the community where it states that they have changed there mind on the blood slider and are bring that back to the game in a patch by around mid-may. The only difference is that blood will not splatter on your screen when you kill certain enemies. They also changed certain outfits for the Elin race but that was to stop the dirty pedo’s from jacking off while playing the game. Nothing has been mentioned about the profanity filter though and I can’t see why it hasn’t just been given a tick box like every other MMO.

So basically, while they have apologised about the lack of communication, they have changed the things most people have a problem with and hopefully this should close this argument.

I’m 31 years old, I’ve been played MMOs since the late 90′s and personally I’ve been on the fence about TERA for the longest time. For this reason I naturally I jumped at the chance to try out the open beta last weekend and I must say I loved the combat. It’s fresh and invigorating in a genre that has been pretty stale for years and for the first time since reading about the game, I started to actually want it – it gave me the craving.

However as it happens, I live in Denmark and by simple geography that puts me squarely on the European side of the controversy surrounding this game. As result I’m appalled by EVERYTHING that has happened in the course of bringing this game to the western market. Censorship is bad enough in its own right but the sacrifices that are being made in the effort of targeting a larger demographic, first in the US and then further in the EU, is not only sad, it’s downright offensive to me as an independent consumer.

As a result, I would not play the European version of TERA at this point, even if Frogster paid me to do so. The first thing I did after logging out of the beta and reading up compounding levels of censorship due to the ridiculous PEGI 12 rating, was go to Arenanet’s home page and buy my edition of Guild Wars 2.

I cannot, and will not support companies that propose to make it their business strategy of telling me what I should and shouldn’t be seeing in a game designed for my age group in the first place.

    TL:DR.
Frogster’s PEGI 12 rating helped me pre-purchase Guild Wars 2.

and here I was excited about the game. Now I feel kinda disgusted. I’m gonna see if I can play on NA instead. If not, no TERA from here. This is the limit.
