How Long Will It Take For The Secret World To Sell One Million Copies?

Welcome to this week’s installment of Over/Under, where you, the GAMEBREAKER fans, get to show off your prognostic powers and see if you can outguess the staff or even the people who make games themselves!

The rules are simple: we’ll offer you a quantifiable number, or perhaps a date, and ask you to predict whether the answer will be over or under our stated value.

Then, when we know the answer — typically within a few weeks or months — we’ll make a post to let you know how you did!

Today’s question is:

How long will it take before The Secret World sells one million copies?

First of all, a little history lesson: Age of Conan launched May 17, 2008, and Funcom reported one million sales on June 6. That’s 20 days.

There could be reasons why The Secret World, which officially launched on July 3, will sell slower or faster than AoC did, but we’ll go with that same time span — 20 days past release — to see when Funcom makes its big announcement.

Just get your vote in early, because you never know when the word will come down!

Our Over/Under target is July 23.

  • If you think TSW will reach one million sales after July 23, post OVER in a comment below.
  • If you think TSW will reach one million sales on or before July 23, post UNDER in a comment below.

And if you’re wrong, don’t blame it on an Illuminati plot…

    Over… definitely over!
    like…
FOREVERRRRR (lol ok not really but still pretty long)

    Over.

TSW is a niche game, a good game but niche none the less. I feel July is way too soon of a target for this Over/Under, I’d have chosen September or October to give it a fairer chance.

I hope it will sell over a million by the end of the year but I certainly don’t think it will have sold a million copies by the end of the month.

  • falknerblitz

Over. GW2 coming out next month, probably of sales away.

The buzz about this game was fairly low.

  • Mightywombat32

after testing the game..i would say OVER without a doubt…its nothing really spesial i found the game rather boring but im not saying im right just that the impression i got was that there wasnt so much spesial there.

    • Old Ben

The thing is… people who didn’t play the beta haven’t tried the game, so they might still buy it even if it turns out they won’t like it. So while the game might not reach 1 million long-term (or even short-term) subscribers, it might get 1 million _sales_ easily, depending on international advertising, etc..

      • Jay

You bring up a good point… Proper marketing does wonders.

it will be really funny to see if TSW will get better numbers than SWTOR.

  • jgelling

OVER – I’d be absolutely, 100% shocked if TSW reached 1 million sales in any foreseeable future. I don’t think they’ll ever sell 1 million copies unless they mark it down to $10 like Rift or go free to play.

I’d note I checked Amazon occasionally and TSW, even with its release buzz, was usually still being outsold by GW2 (people pre-ordering 2 months out). So yeah, no way a million.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/3JO75BNS43WDETCNCO7F7XS6Q4 jo

    under.

lot of guys coming off SWTOR and TERA will flock to TSW in hopes of finding that place to call home before you know what drops. i predict 1 million sales by july 22nd and a hefty drop off(of course heavily denied by funcom and EVERY fanboy under  the sun) not long after.

just look at our own Sharuko. he’s packed his TERA bags and headed for funcom land.

    • jgelling

I don’t know about everyone else but most of the guild members I knew that left SWTOR went back to WoW and seem content there. Since there’s no sub, a lot of people are thinking of playing WoW and GW2 at the same time, whereas most people would never pay for 2 MMO subs.

I think WoW is the haven for people leaving SWTOR and TERA – it’s the only MMO that’s maintaining its subs.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/3JO75BNS43WDETCNCO7F7XS6Q4 jo

many of them have already fled from SWTOR to TERA and from TERA to TSW.

like i said, ask Sharuko. when their game flounders they have to look for another game that they can champion, thinking “anything but [that which shall not be named]“. i’m completely serious when i say that maybe a third of TSW customers will be refugees scrambling to find a worthwhile MMO besides WoW and [that which shall not be named].

read TERA’s official forums(and TSW’ too) sooooo many from SWTOR have tried ot settle there but sadly end up back in WoW or even Rift. TSW is definitely the next temporary shelter and i see it selling over 1 million copies possibly in less than 30 days because of it.

        • Jay

Lol go ahead and say it… GW2…

Uh oh, I think I hear the trolls coming… ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

  • aow9

I would say OVER and OVER again but not the 23 july, it maybe take some time because i dont think people know about it yet, but i can say wowkiller ; )

Funcome you made it this time thanks!

    • jgelling

So you’re saying you’re going OVER – even though you think the game is great and will get to 1 million soon – because you think it’ll be slightly later than July 23? Just to be clear, if you think the game is a hit you should be going UNDER.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/3JO75BNS43WDETCNCO7F7XS6Q4 jo

same kind of shit said for TERA and SWTOR.

  • Jay

How long will it take? I don’t know, ask the investors… Oh, wait…

  • Damir Miric

if they sell 1 milion ill buy 2 copies to remind my self that I still dont understand average gamer

  • http://www.facebook.com/obrienweb Chris O’Brien

OVER.  I don’t think there is as much hype about TSW as there was for AOC.  It will take a bit longer for the game too pass the one million sales mark, but I think it will get there with word of mouth.

Also, just because a MMORPG isn’t in the fantasy realm of dwarves and elfs, zombies are a very popular subject so saying the game is niche doesn’t really make sense to me.

    • jgelling

Fantasy games have much broader appeal than Lovecraftian horror. Dark and gory content is going to alienate a lot of people.

The types that spend huge money on sparkle ponies aren’t going to want to live in a virtual world of darkness and decay.

      • http://www.facebook.com/obrienweb Chris O’Brien

Well, I used to work at a movie theater, and when a new scary movie came out that is when the place gets really busy.  People love dark and gory content and plenty of other games prove it.

        • jgelling

People like to *visit* and *experience* a bit of horror now and again – they still don’t want to live there. Or not many do.

The fact the world is so dark absolutely puts the game in a smaller niche. I’m sure they fully expect that. It will attract a small number of people and alienate a lot of others, but it lets them stand out from the generic competitors.

      • Old Ben

Calling TSW “Lovercraftian” is stretching it a bit. Lovercraft’s stories tend to be about very small groups of people going mad, not about hordes of zombies and ghosts taking over cities. Comparing Lovercraft’s Innsmouth to Funcom’s Kingsmouth is a bit like like comparing Columbo to Rambo.

Zombies and creatures from hell are pretty much the basis of all Doom games, several levels in Half-Life, and significant chunks of WoW itself. Do those games lack broad appeal? Zombies might not be _enough_ to keep people interested in TSW, but they are every bit as popular as elves, vampires or robots (although it’s harder to imagine a gay zombie than any of the other ones – maybe that’s an untapped market waiting to be… er… tapped).

There are no mounts in TSW, so the “sparkle ponies” aren’t really a valid comparison. I’m sure if Funcom sold bicycles, scooters, choppers or segways at the cash shop, a lot of people would buy them. They even have the models in the game (well, the bicycles and scooters, at least), but unfortunately (like most objects in TSW) they’re just decorative, and you can’t interact with them in any way.

        • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Maybe they will pick a Lovecraft style boss for a raid. Other MMO’s have used raid bosses inspired by the Lovecraft Cthulhu style mythos.

          • Old Ben

            > Other MMO’s have used raid bosses inspired
            > by the Lovecraft Cthulhu style mythos.

I’ll believe they’re inspired by Cthulhu when they let me drive a yacht through their heads.

    • Old Ben

      > zombies are a very popular subject so saying the game
      > is niche doesn’t really make sense to me.

I think some people saw the description of one or two investigation missions and think the whole game is like that. In fact, 95% of quests are traditional MMO stuff (kill zombies / go to waypoint / fetch object).

  • DoctorOverlord

Over.  I don’t think it will make 1 million total.   But who knows, things are changing in the MMO genre, maybe there still is a market for sub-based games but I personally think that model is fading.

  • Jay

Over… August 28th will be here in no time. Then it will be even harder to justify a subscription.

  • Cyclops07

I played the beta as much as i could stand. In my opinion the game is indeed very niche and average at best. In the long run due to advertising maybe it hits a mil but I think it will be Over. I agree with some of the comments below about the other mmo refugees from other games that will come in and help it get to a million if it in fact does but I don’t think they will stay very long and will go back to their old game.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

    aaahahahahah music theme… epic…
imo the Secret World wont hit 1 milion…

  • Old Ben

Have you considered adding actual polls to these articles? Can’t be too hard to code or get a prefab poll script for the site.

  • emo_panda_dog

OVER, as insane as it might sound coming from me.

I like many agree, it more than likely will NOT hit 1 million. Personally I think the biggest contributor to this is it’s a sub-based game that has nothing that justifies paying for it. It looks interesting, different mythos and lore, but in a nutshell it’s just another MMO on the market with nothing new to bring to the table. But that’s just me and my OPINION.

  • ChristopherRuscoe

  • Joshua Sant

Over. It looks like a great game but I think the fact that it’s a new IP with considerable competition yet charges a box price, cash shop and sub price that is more expensive for the UK than any of their competition is going to make it a bit unattractive to people.

    Over. :(

  • BigH001

    Over, for four reasons.

    1. AoC had hella hype behind it. TSW not so much that I’ve seen.
    2. AoC was a more “standard” MMO. TSW is more niche.
    3. AoC was in that first big wave of “Not WoW” MMOs which pulled in a lot of people who were tired of WoW. There’s a lot more competition out there for TSW.
    4. The time of the sub fee is fading. While that’s not saying sub fee games will all fail, or that a company won’t make a profit with a sub based system, I think they’ll have a much harder time than they would have had 3 or 4 years ago.

rofl, yet is quickly gaining the stupidest and least mature fanbase around.

  • 7BitBrian

I really like this game, but Over. It’s niche and that’s a good thing. it won’t need a million to be successful and pay for itself, and it probably won’t get that many. But it will get a respectable number and hold on to it(the most important part SWTOR, holding on to them). So all’s good in my eyes.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/FPXO267IVAHL3MK4HRRNRQPNDA Bush Swanson, The American Dre

The secret world will most definitely sell less than a million. Probably less than 500000. I have a few reasons why.

    1. How come you can’t fly? I can fly in other games but in this game all I can do is jump.

    2. The jumping is absurd. When you jump you jump too high. I would probably, if I were a character in Secret World, not try to solve the mysteries of the world, and instead do something jumping based, like basketball or the Olympics.

    3. Where’s the boats?

    4. The environment is stale. You cannot interact with it. If they allowed you to do something cool like climb trees or dig that would be way better. If you could dig a little fort and hide from all the zombies and other “secrets” that would be so sick.

    5. New England is not full of zombies it’s full of ****’s.

    6. The combat was stupid. I hated having to spam the same attacks over and over again. Nothing was flashy enough either.

    7. PVP is more like PVPoop.

    8. Funcom has never made a good game ever.

    9. EA’s has never published a good MMO.

    10. No one is going to look secrets up they are all going to find a guide and do the quests immediately.

    11. How come all the characters look like hipsters and emos. I don’t want to play as that, I want to play as someone who looks awesome, not emotionally unstable.

    12. The cut scenes are horrible. Even the very first one, the very first thing you see, is like some dude on a bed freakin out because he got stung by a bee. Get over yourself.

    13. I don’t see one single pet class and that is completely ****ed.

    14. It’s too dark. I literally can’t see half the game on my monitor, I looked in game for a flash light and I did find one but you couldn’t pick it up it was just SITTING ON A TABLE HELLO!

    15. The prices for items from vendors is waaaaay too high. If I want to buy something it’s like great now I am broke thanks.

    16. The guild system is not good enough.

    17. Built around pay to win.

This is just a few of my complaints. I have more too, but I’m a little too frustrated to type them all out right now. This game is so bad and I feel bad for anyone who is going to buy it because it will go out of business in like 5 months.

    • Old Ben

      > New England is not full of zombies it’s full of ****’s.

God have mercy on our souls. The asterisks are coming.

    • http://twitter.com/Agimat08 Solo Miranda

I would say UNDER as well but your comment is so bias it’s hilarious lmaooo and some of them are not even true at all. Funcom didn’t make this game to be the most popular game anyway but that being I challenge you that this game will be over 500000 or closer to million!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

Over!  I don’t think it will break 1mil.  The game just doesn’t have the quality.  The content is super interesting, but the combat system is boring and looks horrible.  I don’t expect flashy, I just want fluid animations.  TSW’s combat isn’t about the variety of skills or the cool looking effects, so at the very least it should have good animations.  I also feel like the classes (different weapon types) have questionable skills in them.  The only class that’s a power healer is the melee class that uses claws?  Wolverine anyone?  Either way, I don’t feel like there’s enough choice for me to enjoy it.  I love playing different classes, but none of them seem to do much of anything.  At least not anything interesting.  Yeah, sure, the way quests are set up is actually quite perfect, but the rest of the game is lacking in its entirety.

    • Old Ben

Claws + assault rifle is pretty much the best healing combination, which makes perfect sense if you think about it.

      No?

Maybe I should stop going to that clinic, then…

Played a couple of days. The only thing it has going for it is the solo questing – and single player RPGs do it better.

No mounts? No flashlights (in a very DARK game)? Get serious.

No need to group (but that is a dirty word in MMOs now).

    I regret my purchase.

    • Spammerbam

“No mounts? No flashlights (in a very DARK game)? Get serious.”

      - Wait, you want mounts in a game like this? Seriously?

Maybe different horses at most, but other than that, I can’t imagine mounts being available in this game.

      • MMO_Doubter

You are fighting monsters with spells. Nothing unreasonable about being able to RIDE mythical beasts as well.

Horses would be appropriate in some areas, but I am referring to cars, motorcycles, even bicycles.

I could MAKE my own vehicles in Fallen Earth.

        • http://www.facebook.com/jvanoosten83 Jeroen Van Oosten

we got upgradeble sprints mutch cooler than mounts

          • MMO_Doubter

Running fast – cooler than riding a motorcycle?

             Not even close.

  • Saurabh Singh

    Under.

The Secret World has perhaps the best theme, immersion and environment of any MMO. It’s different from others and I think that’s what a lot of players want. Questing is usually the biggest time sink in any MMO and TSW’s questing is (imo) the least boring of all MMOs. The combat may look slow when you are watching it stream, but it’s a lot skill based to execute since you can move while casting and must move out of mob aoe within a second to avoid damage.

How long will it last… I can’t say, because that depends on how fast they release new content how is their endgame (I haven’t reached endgame yet). But I am having the most fun I have had while leveling in any MMO. I have tried almost all AAA MMOs released in the US since early 2005.
This game is definitely worth trying for a few months (or until end august release of GW2).

  • Spammerbam

Under. Maybe close to a million copies, who knows.

  • Jose Villarreal

    I think it’ll be over.
Mostly [b]because[/b] of Age of Conan. Too many players were burned by that game, which would make a lot of them hesitant to give funcom their money.

Even with players hyping the game up and convincing people that it isn’t terrible, they’ll be weary of this game. Especially with those “packs” you can buy.

  • http://twitter.com/AJWolf84 AJ Wolf

Over. The sub fee kills it. I’ll wait for it to go B2P/F2P.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Byrne/100001642673542 Michael Byrne

I think a more interesting OVER/UNDER on TSW would be how many “pre-ordered” copies remained unclaimed by the people that pre-ordered it after they played in the betas. And that’s coming from someone who liked the concept and doesn’t think the game is as bad as some people state.
    -Magicman

  • Sharuko

Under and in this market I don’t think it will hit 1 million for years, if at all.

And honestly I blame gaming/MMO sites including Massively and Gamebreaker for some of it.  Because all these sites were so blinded by GW2 hype they totally ignored TSW a game that is excellent and vastly superior to GW2.

Watching news and coverage of TSW I thought it would be horrible, after playing it I was amazed how good it was.  Not only that, TSW released with all the “innovate” features GW2 touted for years, almost every single one and implemented these features better.

I pat the back of Funcom for now hyping these “features” as the second coming and not making 100 blog posts over these “features” like Arenanet did.  They just delivered a product without the hype.

    • Jay

       Damn Sharuko, you still mad?!

      You’d think GW2 stole your girlfriend…

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/3JO75BNS43WDETCNCO7F7XS6Q4 jo

Sharuko had a hard break up with TERA and TSW is the rebound. TSW sucks for a modern day setting MMO. very little character customization(should be on par with APB) and the skill system has LESS depth and viable combinations than the first Guild Wars(and that game had classes).

        • Sharuko

Typical fan lying to get your point across.  I try all new MMOs, almost every single one.  I am honest as to what I like and dislike.  To be GW2 is in the same league as STO and FFXIV.

      • Old Ben

I would say GW2 _is_ his girlfriend. Or he wants her to be, but just doesn’t know how to express his feelings, so he keeps putting frogs in her backpack and pretending to like other girls, just to try to make her notice him.

    • MMO_Doubter

Any regular to the GBTV threads on GW2 knows I am more critical of GW2 than most people, but no, man. Just no.

This thing is a mess. Fine idea for a setting, but very sloppy execution.

      • Jay

Lol, this genuinely made me laugh.

    • Spammerbam

At least everyone knows TSW is also excellent and vastly superior to Tera in almost every category.
For one, TSW definitely gives players the freedom to choose how they want to play. In Tera, you’re forced to play the same role and play-style for eternal life — sadly as a modern MMO, you don’t have any weapon choices either.

    • Senatic

      TSW:

Boring static combat (standard mmo -stand still go through your rotation) focused on the holy trinity.

Sub fee and cash shop. (milk dem customers)

Weird ass cut scenes with bad voice actors? (maybe just from the ones I saw, didn’t impress me one bit though)To sum up, what we have here is another SW:ToR attempt, taking WoW and putting a gimmick on it – unfortunately it just ain’t enough anymore as shown by how badly SW:ToR is doing in relation to expectations.

      GW2:

New spin on combat, or at least a less common approach. Characters control tightly and feel responsive, your skills are situational and there is a nice difficulty which forces you to think and play in a responsive manner making the whole action part of the game come in to its own.

Cut scenes that have a personality of their own not seen in any other game, how many games use their concept art as backdrop?

Cash shop but no sub fee.

Everything in the Cash shop can be acquired by in game currency. Meaning even though there’s no sub fee and the cash shop is the developers only source of income post box sale they are willing to give you these items for free if you work for them.

To sum up, Guild Wars 2 beats Secret world out of the water in pretty much every way possible, it looks, plays and feels better. It is better. The only way you’d go for TSW over GW2 is if you are looking for a game that isn’t high fantasy or if you’re into that whole lovecraftian stuff.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/GUE4QABKXF3FPXFO6BJ6JVZQ3Y Sergizzs

You sound incredibly biased. TSW is incredibly fun. If you dont like it fine but dont make it sound like GW2 is the 2nd coming of jesus. Just another boring medieval mmo with dragons and other crap thats been done to death. TSW is a breath of fresh air and the first zone alone has more content than most mmos first day. The launch was smooth, and the way they only have a few servers that can hold a ton of people is brilliant. Try it before you talk lest you look like an ignorant fan boy.

        • MMO_Doubter

I bought it – didn’t like it. Want a list?

      • Sharuko

My main gripe with GW2 is combat, it has one of the worst combat executions I have ever seen in an MMO.  WoW and TSW combat is better than GW2.  Tera combat is on a different league.

I do have problems with TSW’s cashshop but other than that there is no competition here.  TSW is better than GW2.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Mac/777995513 Alex Mac

Over. And I think that it will end up being a rather niche title. Simply put, it doesn’t have a lot going for it outside of a solid design for character progression and a few interesting quests. I’d expect it to end up FTP soonest out of any game on the market at the moment.

I hope its under it’s a really good MMO one of the better one’s i have played. Will be playing this till MoP comes out. Feels so different than everything else, well worth it.

  • Samson Ibarra

Over. Unless players actualy like getting milked of all their hard eaned cash. I mean Buy the game, then pay a sub, but wait, AND there’s a cash shop?!?! If I am payin a monthly sub, I should be able to get full access to everything within the game. I should not have to drop real world cash for somthing I like in a cash shop. Soon enough, it will be a place to purchase your “win” products. If I wanted to participate in a game like that, I def would not pay a sub to do so. And before you all decide you have to flame me, and tell me, “Well, you don’t HAVE to buy anything in the cash shop.” you are missing the point.  Everything in that “shop” should be obtainable through the game, in one form or another while maintaining a sub, completing quests, unlocking achieves and what have you.  If I like somthing in that “shop” and I can’t get it IN-GAME, then it looks like I would HAVE to buy somthing, wouldn’t I? I will not be buying or subin due to this soon to be p2w format however, I did enjoy the time spent in Beta.

    • MMO_Doubter

I was foolish enough to break my own rule and buy this game.

I completely agree with this post.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/3JO75BNS43WDETCNCO7F7XS6Q4 jo

more evidence for Under. people like this guy, looking for that sweet escape. anything that might possibly hold them and legitimize their stance against [that which shall not be named].

TSW will clean up off of such people, that much is certain.

      • Cyclops07

sorry that you bought a game that you regret, believe me I used to make that mistake all the time. I’m glad that I saw enough to know that this game is not worth my money.

    • 7BitBrian

So do you say the same things about World of Warcraft’s cash shop? You buy it’s box, have to pay a sub fee, and it has a cash shop selling character and account services and pets and mounts.

I’m sorry but it’s hard to take this seriously when there isn’t any actual content in the cash shop, you can buy t-shirts and jeans. Big f*****g whoop.

      • MMO_Doubter

I stopped subbing to WoW last year. The cash shop was a major reason.

        • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Leaving WoW over the cash shop, no way!  Leave because you find it no longer fun, or dont want to do the gear grind, or tired of hot key MMO. That I can understand.

But leave WoW over the cash shop?  While I havent purchased a cash shop mount or pet (came close on the charity pets), I stay log into WoW the entire day a new mount is released.  It’s just amazing to see the number of people that just ploped down $25 for the sparkle pony or Disco Lion.   They will be everywhere!

          • Samson Ibarra

You’re right! Players do like bein milked of every drop! Guess I may have to change my original post to Under! Shut up and take my money!  >:)

      • Samson Ibarra

Pft! I don’t play World of Borecraft rendering this question moot

i can answer that without watching the video, over unless your speculated date was never, which would defeat the purpose of the game.

Over Box fee plus overpriced sub fee and now this cash shop scam i`ll pass on it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/krister.holmberg Krister Holmberg

    Never.

I don´t believe Age of Conan  even reached that (perhaps barely) and that game had a lot more hype and interest from players back then.

AoC sold 1 million during its first month.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

AoC   Million box sales, 700,000 subs and within a few months down to 100k subs.

    Over.

July 23rd seems too close to now. It probably will make a million…I’m not big on how much mmos sell…but I don’t think it’ll make it in 20 days.

  • MilamberNova

    Over

Age of Conan had more hype behind it imo.

  • QSatu

Over if ever tbh. Based on Amazon and VGChartz (the pre orders) if tSW sells 1kk this month gW2 will sell 3kk by release and I doubt that. And AoC had MUCH MORE hype than TSW.

Over.  Let’s think this through, StarWars: The Old Republic has over a million but not yet 2 million subs last i heard… STARWARS!! Mike B is absolutely right that The Secret World IP is not as mainstream as Star Wars.  And both are on the same box + sub model.  I seriously doubt it will ever get to 1 million sales.

  • Eggers

    It won’t get a million 500k to 700k tops

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Phil-Thompson/1646123599 Phil Thompson

This PoS game wont even get 500k.

Mike B, please host one of the GameBreaker shows. You would do a great job.

  • saluk

Wow those tentacles on the guys arm make me want this game. Also make me wish it was a single player action-adventure instead of an mmo.

  • http://twitter.com/Xenetics Rory O’Connor

    over as in never

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=638807403 Morten Ryhding Pedersen

ofc it will go over 1 million.. because people are stupid and buy everything new that looks “fun”. but i see it die every quick, 2 months after launch – 50% atleast.
And no to a show about it.
I rather see you doing more of the others shows like gw2.

  • Jesse Wan

Over. If it doesn’t hit a million by August 24th, it never will.

Considering you have to buy the box, sub, and cash shop, a more relevant question is how long will it take for it to break even?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Hatcher/100000111448255 David Hatcher

Over. Sub plus cash shop will keep people away.

Under, the game is growing more and more popular – very fast.

    “Unlimited power!”

  • http://twitter.com/TheOpapanax Most Morbid One

It will be close; closer than people might think. Won’t be a blowout or a complete dominance of the number..

I’m going with over.. Maybe around 1.2 Million..

Prob wrong but this is the game.. GBTV OVER UNDER!!!

  • Henning Scheel

Haters – please check out this review, ”The Secret World is frighteningly good.” – MSNBChttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/48127565#48127565

    • Bo MacIsaac

Yeah.. uhh.. sweet review.  I know MSNBC is where I go for my gaming reviews.

      • http://www.facebook.com/stradus.woods Stradus Woods

I mean they know there gaming after all.

How much they get paid to do a review?

O wait that would never be the case……………………………………

But seriously know the gamer before you read a review, works out better in the long run.

  • Fuseki

They will not report the number of sales before the 10 august, but by then they will pass 1 mill.

    • Old Ben

Well, it’s August 13th and so far they haven’t released any exact numbers. The only thing they released was in the Q1 report:

“Funcom has on several occasions presented two financial scenarios for the first 12 months following launch of the game; please refer to page 17 in the 1Q 2012 presentation. Funcom does not consider it likely that either of them will be met. [...] Funcom is currently implementing several cost-adjustment initiatives due to the expected lower initial revenues from The Secret World to secure future positive cash flows.”

IIRC, one of those “financial scenarios” was based on 490k subscribers after 1 year. If they don’t think they’ll be met, that means they’re probably well under that.

  • http://twitter.com/BigMac37s Brandon m

TSW is doing pretty good on word of mouth.  And the new patch they announced looks pretty stellar.  7 new investigation quests, 2 nightmare dungeons, new stores, cross server AH.

    • Old Ben

But wasn’t all of that supposed to be in the game at launch? And the same goes for the raids. The game is supposed to have raids but launched without any.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ElementalEcho Michael Johnson

This was one of the worst games I’ve ever seen and funcom should be embarassed that this 2005 game is even on the market the way it is. Terrible character customization, horrible combat, atrocious cutscenes and just an overall rushed MMO… This game will NEVER even hit 500k

  • Old Ben

Well, given the silence I think it’s likely that they didn’t reach 1 million within the first month.
