When Will Guild Wars 2 Launch?

Welcome to this week’s installment of Over/Under, where you, the GAMEBREAKER fans, get to show off your prognostic powers and see if you can outguess the staff or even the people who make games themselves!

The rules are simple: we’ll offer you a quantifiable number, or perhaps a date, and ask you to predict whether the answer will be over or under our stated value.

Then, when we know the answer — typically within a few weeks or months — we’ll make a post to let you know how you did!

Today’s question is:

When will Guild Wars 2 launch?

No, “when it’s ready” is not a valid answer.

It has to be pretty soon, right? We’ve given ArenaNet our money, there’s a beta next weekend… we can’t be too far off, can we?

For purposes of this post, we’re referring to the actual mass release date — not pre-release or early access.

Our Over/Under target is July 24.

If you think GW2 will launch after July 24, post OVER in a comment below.
If you think GW2 will launch on or before July 24, post UNDER in a comment below.

Really, even if you answer OVER, I think you’d be happy to be wrong on this one.

I’m going with my optimistic guess, since my pessimistic one puts release into November and no one wants that.

But end of July or beginning or August seems like a reasonable date to me. I think they’ll announce the release date shortly after BWE2, and then we’ll have another BWE at the start of July. With release at the end of July or beginning of august, before school starts up again.

Just because WE haven’t played two of the races yet, doesn’t mean they haven’t been tested. They might be holding them back for launch to build some excitement and leave some surprise in the opening levels.

Take it like this. IMHO there will be at least 3 beta weekedns (since it’s such a big deal with the pre-purchase and stuff) so lets say there are 40 days between each beta test. First one was august 27th, second is june 8th, the third one will be around july 13th. Then another 2 months to finish and retail the game (one month to finish a polish the game and one month to release it – distribution and stuff) which leaves us with – September. This is the first possible release month assuming only 1 month to finish a polish the game which i’d say isn’t enough.

So my personal tip is november. It’s unfortunate, but it’s logical.

Unless they have serious problems that they cannot solve quickly, Arenanet will not want to wait beyond that, because it would be likely to lead to negative publicity. A lot of people have already paid for the game, and after a while they will begin to get annoyed.

Under. All they have done in the beta weekends are small stuff. And we are prob playing 2 or 3 loads back from what they have done on a internal test server. Also predict that last 2 races will not be playable before release. Will give them a ton of chatter on the internet for not showing the 2 most anticipated races before release.

Game is ready and they know it. What few things they “fixed” were mainly releasing the video from full cpu to full gpu which made people think ooh wow they did alot of optimization.. lol. This game has been in the oven for so long I would bet this whole beta stuff is just a stunt to suck in the press and it worked. How much press would they have received if they released last beta with full gpu support and all the races and it ran super smooth and was fun as heck…. not as much because press wants problems to complain about not perfect beta.

Now a perfect launch is where it is at. With the overload servers running arena net wont have to release with waaay to many servers.. ala Rift SWtor. This will be the best launch of any MMO. Best thing is they wont do the stupid.. you pre ordered on this date so you get in pre launch by that date that SWTOR did lol.

So sum it up. Arenanet played all of us and the media by not showing the game done last beta and not releasing 2 races. It worked perfectly. Everyone fell for it and they got tons of free press out of it. to Arenanet pr machine!

I think we’ll see at least (and I mean “at least”, there could be more) two more BWE: One with the Asuras and Sylvari and the final BWE. This pust at least 2 months of BWE. But they won’t release straight away after the final BWE: They have to make some more noise, marketing stuff for those who didn’t buy the game yet. I read somewhere else that this usually takes a month, so 3 months from now. This makes the earliest — again, in my opinion — in September.

OVER, as I know they will only launch when rdy and although it feels like they’re nearly there, I think there will be at least a couple more beta’s… besides… a launch of an mmo in summer is BAD marketing as it is the most calm period of the year… a lot of players are on holiday/vacation/out in the sun/… and then there is the new stuff coming out wich I’m sure they don’t want to play to close to that (TSW, MoP, …). So I predict it will be some where in late august early september…
Do I want it soon? Hell yeah, but I rather w8 a bit longer then play an unfinnished product as is the case with MOST games/companies these days as they rush to bring their^product on the market.

Anet is smart about this. They already increased their server space but have yet to beta test the Asuran and Silvari starter areas, and first impressions are everything. I would bet that they test these and work on the game another month before release. I am guessing they will release the game in November sometime. It makes sense to release it around Thanksgiving for two reasons: many people will be on break which will make for a massive release date, and it is the time of the year when Christmas shopping is at a peak. Given a November release they have plenty of time to test and patch before release and it heightens the hype by a factor of holiday-rush.

The state of the beta and the fact that they’re upgrading and buying new hardware in preparation tells me that it’s getting close. October/November seem too distant to me, I don’t see them needing that long. And it puts them closer to competing with MoPs release. And lets face it the hypes big but GW2′s release will be drowned out if the next WoW expansion hits around the same time.

I think we’ll at least see 1 or 2 more BWE’s after the next one. In terms of the pace – I think they’d love to release the game ASAP, but I can’t help to think that they’re probably slightly less rushed now, due the sales income from pre-purchases. I think they’ll take as much time as they can (within 2012) to make GW2 close to perfect.

They need time to advertise the announcement. If it went live in July, we would be seeing ads about it now. Also summer is not good for a release. I’ll say first of September, right after school lets in. They will announce the release date shortly after the success of BWE3, unless of course something goes drastically wrong with that.
