WoW Patch 5.2 removes the daily quest grind!

With the arrival of patch 5.2 on the PTR, Blizzard’s devs are really shaking up the Mists of Pandaria status quo as far as gearing goes.

Lead Systems Designer Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street tweeted recently as follows:

And a cheer was heard among those players who aren’t that keen on dailies as a method for gating valor items!

Those who do enjoy dailies have two new factions, at least, to work on, the Kirin Tor Offensive and the Sunreaver Onslaught. These two factions, for the Alliance and Horde respectively, are joined by the Silver Covenant and Silvermoon City factions in Thunder Isle, all of these offer daily quests and reputation rewards, but we don’t know quite what just yet.

What Ghostcrawler is referring to is the Shado-Pan offensive, which is the Mists equivalent of Cataclysm’s Avengers of Hyjal, for which reputation can be gained only by killing trash and bosses in the relevant raid. The Avengers of Hyjal Quartermaster only sold rings, belts, cloaks and trinkets, but for gold rather than valor. Ghostcrawler’s tweet, and the patch 5.2 patch notes, both suggest that valor points will be spent with these vendors.

So where does this leave alts in patch 5.2?

This is one of the big concerns for players going into patch 5.2. Patch 5.1 was famously alt-unfriendly, with its valor gear gated behind reputations which were, in turn, gated behind reputations. But is gearing with reputation effectively gated behind raid progression any more useful for the altoholic, or simply for players returning to Mists a little behind the gear curve?

What players can hope is that the raid reputation is also gained via the raid finder. Sure, it will mean that the raid finder becomes genuinely obligatory, as the only reliable way to gain reputation early on in the patch for this new faction, but is that a lesser or a greater evil than dailies? At this point it is unclear what the quartermasters for the new factions outside the raid will offer, but it’s possible that a sort of tandem gearing system will be available across the three factions each for Horde and Alliance.

What are you hoping for? More gear through dailies, being forced to do the Raid Finder, or gear accessible only via raiding? A rock or a hard place? The frying pan or the fire?

That art is amazing!  I assume it’s two totally buff Trolls and a non-fem Blood Elf dude.

    Who did it?

It’s good and bad, great for the people starting to play MoP, terrible for the player who have wasted countless hours of there lives for nothing. WHich means all the work you put in up until now becomes worth shit.

its a game dude and gaming is a waste of life if you wanna get technical some people like the change some will not FACT.

A valid argument if you’re young and have no responsibilities, but when I pay for something and I have a family, that’s a hobby or an expense, but if I weren’t playing wow, I’d be wasting time in dive bars or other stupid activities.  This is a HOBBY, not a game, especially when you do the math of 8 years x subscription fee each month.

        • veggiedude

But I am paying more in cable TV fee’s and what do I have for the 20 years of doing that?

Same exact thing can be said for anything you did in previous expansions.  All the work I put in at 85 has no importance now at 90.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Wow, that’s a harsh view.  I play so I can raid with my guild.

I’m seeing a lot of returning players, so anything that helps them gear up is great for my raid team.

Plus, I still got a couple of 85s that are still in need of leveling.

can’t raid without grinding.  It’s almost as if Blizzard is now blatantly saying, “we want you to pay us forever”  Unless of course you’re 12, and have no adult responsibilities, it is very difficult now to get anything accomplished, ESPECIALLY if you have alts.
There are two very important factors to the old school player influencing the drop in subscriptions:
        a) GEAR is TOO accessible and the desired results rely TOO much on NUMBERS as opposed to a person knowing their class.  We have been bottlenecked into how we play.
        b) TIME and MONEY.  This is kind of like the first reason in that you’re forced into grinding to get anything accomplished, but my biggest gripe over all is in the numbers.  It is GREAT that I can have two specs, but what good does it do me if each spec forces me to reforge all my stats another direction and I have to pay for it?  The only fix for this is to tie the reforge to the spec, or take the dependence on gearscore out of the picture entirely.

Above all else, I have a solution to every problem that players from vanilla on have with the current content, ready?

Vanilla only, BC only, Wrath only, Cata only servers.  It’s not like you don’t have the money blizz.

Erm.. removes what ?  Did you only read the first sentence?

“There is also a daily rep like in 5.1.”  That means … they did not remove anything – just added another way.

    • http://www.facebook.com/JoeKey Joe Key

2 faction reps.  One earned from raids only (presumably) that has VP gear tied to it.  The other “5.1 daily rep” is a different faction that doesn’t have VP gear for sale, therefore not required.

        Precisely, Joe.

If I remember the Black Prince questline will have alot of steps to it, but it’s not bad. You simply play the game and the Black Prince questline takes care of itself.  I’m currently on the 6000 VP quest and you get that through raids, heroics, scenarios and dailies. Almost halfway done.

Hoping the 5.2 steps are more of the same.

I know there is a lot of discussion about alts from you Olivia on Legendary, and I’m in the same boat having a few 90s but only being compelled to gear up my main through the daily grind just because of “daily fatigue.”

I was actually excited about item upgrades, because I could easily get into heroics, get item level for LFR and completely ignore VP vendors and use my points to upgrade gear I obtained in LFR.  Of course it relies on getting lucky for drops in LFR, but I liked that I at least had something to spend VP on without grinding rep.

I’m sad to see the upgrade system go away for now, but I wonder if they will make it easier to buy the VP gear from the faction vendors (GL, Klaxxi, Shado Pan and Aug Celestials)?  What if they either lowered the cost to buy the items, or better yet lowered or completely removed the rep requirements to purchase the gear?  Even if they lowered it to honored instead of revered that would be a huge incentive for me to start doing dailies on multiple toons.  Any thoughts?

gear should not be hidden behind any kind of rep. I like many others HATE dailies and refuse to do them cause it’s way to time consuming when other stuff could be done. Dailies grew overwhelming in Cata when we had to grind it for the best enchants and for more or less required epic gear needed to progress. PLEASE get rid of all rep requirements from all justice and valor gear and save us from hating the system anymore. Nothing needed to progress to be able to raid should ever be locked behind rep or dailies. once you earn your justice to valor you should be able to spend your points at a vendor for the pieces you need not have to and be forced to up your rep just to be able to progress gear wise to get ready for raiding. Please take this into consideration thank you

The 5.1 dailies were pretty good, I would give it a recommend for the story line. I can understand the burn-out from the Golden Lotus and Shado Pan dailies, way too long.

I wouldn’t remove ALL of them. In BC and Wrath, for instance, Exalted was pretty much for mounts, head enchant, and an early epic. But at the same time, people couldn’t run raid finder for free epics 2 weeks after launch, so…

They just need to put SOME of them, like really good trinkets or something, and the rest on the traditional valor vendor. What I strongly dislike is how easy the “heroics” are anymore. I think it has to do with a lot of the decisions. Since you can clear most of them under, like, 15 minutes, they can’t reward too much. It’s a dumb decision and really limits them, in turn limiting us. Imagine if the current heroics gave 70 points per boss and rep.

WTB old school heroics that mattered and a blue set!

Sup playas! We made the game so much more simple it almost hurts. No more putting points in specs!!! To compensate that incredible change, we’re gonna make you hate dailies so much you’re gonna start seeing em, IN REAL LIFE. Eventually, you’ll obey them, and that’s all you’re going to do for the rest of your life.

I miss the days when I didn’t have to worry about dailies if I didn’t need gold, the head enchant, or that cool mount. I’m the kind that likes to optimize my play time as much as possible when it comes to WoW… but I also hate dailies. It’s an epic battle versus the dynamic duo Lazyness and Procrastination VS Optimization and Efficiency.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Lol, so many folks miss the days of copying a spec from a Web site.

Some many folks hate having to run raids for gear and just want to buy them with points.

O the horror.. to be the top player on my server i actually have to play my character?  Talents are now a personal choice instead of everyone copy pasting? O No!!!! life is over

Dailes are the sole reason I said bye bye to WoW and it’s lazy content design.  Hi I’m a recovering WoWaholic.  I hate WoW now because for me WoW is a tired old design that keeps getting worse not better.  The only reason that they are making this change at all is I bet their sub numbers are going down due the burnout from daily quests that people need to do just to gear up.  BC was my favorite because while you still needed to grind to gear up it was fun not work.

My WoW days are over and I will never look back.  Time for me to have fun playing games again.  One job is more than enough for me.

I actually enjoy doing dailies and especially loved the 5.1 factions (for horde and alliance). The quests mixed with lore was a great incentive for me to come back each day. As far as getting gear through rep, I feel that it should be account wide; as in once one of your characters hits the required rep level, all of your characters can buy the gear pieces.

i unsubbed for 3 months after getting revered with most of the factions on my main.  It was unbelievably boring near the end of the rep grind.  There were some nice rewards for hitting exalted from the klaaxi and golden lotus.  I also quit because most of the casual guild im in was no-where near me in gear or rep or desire to raid.   The double rep for alts (after hitting revered with a faction) and the new shieldwall offensive brought me back but only just barely.  (I was hoping bethesda would finish elder scrolls online earlier, but when it was pushed back to prob 4th quarter of 2013 i resubbed to wow).  Its february and only a small fraction of the guild are ahead of me gearwise lol so its almost like i wasnt gone.  This xpac may be killing off the guild im in, which has been around since vanilla as it is a casual guild with hard working people in it (im not at the moment).

All I hear are people PISSING AND MOANING about how bad the game designers and play is.
HERE is a simple fix QUIT go play something else. No doubt TBC was by far teh greatest Xpac thus far…due mostly to the fact that you had to BADGE(AKA REP GRIND) for gear. Complete 1 raid just to get attuned to even set foot in another FREAKING WIN I LOVED IT. There was NO I REPEAT NO full clear of new raid boss content on the FIRST night.Look it up as Blizz they can confirm it. Earn your right to be in a good group and quit standing there with your hand like your in a soup kitchen line. and as for LFR’s!!!! LFR stands for Lazy Freaking Raiders who can’t hack it in a real raiding guild and want to be carried through everything.
